View Full Version : Cable length risking quality?

My current 18X18 dish has about 10 feet of cable between it and the area of my basement where all the house's wiring comes together and they connect to go throughout the house.

When I upgrade to the 5LNB in a couple of weeks, I want the installer to put the dish on the other side of the house, which means there will now probably be about 50-60' between the dish and the central area. The CSR said my quality, especially for HD might degrade if it's that far, but I wanted to ask the experts:

Am I really going to see PQ degradation with that distance?

Thanks.

How long are the cable runs from the basement to your rooms? Usually not much of a problem if the total run is <100-150 feet. Anything longer than that and you'll want to consider inline amplifiers.

Definitely less than that...it's only a 2-story house, so it shouldn't be long. So I guess you're saying I should be fine? If so, thanks for the expertise.

You should be fine. Enjoy!

Agreed.

50 feet loss = 1/2 *-7.1 dB(@2150mhz)=-3.55 dB

or

60 feet loss = 3/5 * -7.1 dB(@2150)= -4.26 dB

So: 50 or 60 feet of extra cable would give you only an extra -3.55 to -4.26 dB loss at the 2150mHz mark.

Of course, that's just an estimate. ;)
