View Full Version : HR 20 composit output mode...

I currently own an HR10-250 and am considering and upgrade to an HR20.
My frustration with the HR10 is that when the component output is outputting "HD" video, it shuts down the composite output completely.
This puts me in a situation that if I want to distribute the video of what I'm currently watching, I have to put the DVR into "non-HD" mode to watch the same movie in all the other rooms of the house, even though the broadcast is in HD.
So what does the HR20 do in this situation. The ideal result is that it outputs HD on all outputs when an HD event is playing on it.
Thanks.

Word on the street is that all outputs are active simultaneously. Haven't personally tried composite but word is that it should work.

HR20 does not have composite, I think you mean component.
My HR20 has HDMI, component and RCA connections all live at the same time. My RCA connections feed a modulator to give me composite video for distribution.

Composite comes from RCA connections. I am at work and cannot check the back of the HR20, but I have the manual here, and it shows two composite outputs on back.
All SD outputs are always available (except in standby) no mater what the box resolution is set to. I do the same as the OP, distribute the SD feed over a modulator. I used to have an HR10 and had the same fustration when watching HD programs. I now have an HR20 and can enjoy HD on the main TV and an SD showing in other rooms simultaniously.

So can I connect a dvd recorder through one of the other connections and record a hd program in sd?

You should be able to do that, yes.

My plan is to use the composite/RCA's to tape to a VCR...don't ask why, but yes, I do. The book and posts I saw seemed to indicate I could. I should probably test it out tonight.
I have done this and recorded to VHS and DVD. I get nice results. It is not in HD, but think of it as the best SD you could get. The end result is very nice.
I currently use an hr-20 running both HDMI and comp. They are all active at the same time..
