View Full Version : I believe....the Black Screen of Death
Well, came home last night, turned on the tv and went to channel 70...no picture or audio....went all the way up.....all channels were black except for a few....channels in the 500 range...black...channels in the 600 range...black. The only picture and audio were from channels 2 - 11....went to some recordings that I did last night.....guess what......black, no audio....fast fowarded through the whole recording...nothing....so...did a red button reset...everything came back.
Prior to this last release, I had relatively good experiences with the HR 20....now....can't wait unti the next update.
Here is my other question....reading about the new Microsoft operating system Vista.....50 families were beta testers...they got an occasional pizza and free computer equipment and printers....hey, Direct TV....what the bloody heck to I get for being your beta tester????????
Thanks for listening to my rant....I can guarantee you that I am calling Direct for an adjustment in my bill...I did lose a recording because of this......as someone else put it regarding the software updates....2 steps forward, 1 step back.

I made this mistake myself on calling it the BSOD but in actuallity the BSOD is when everything becomes unresponsive and locks up - The D=Death part. Shorten it down to Black Screen because you still have functionability. :D

This is a fairly common bug and has been around since, I think 0xFA. Anyway, what you are seeing is that the HR20 is able to display MP4 channels only, all MP2 channels are non responsive. The good news is, even when this happens, if you are recording, you are recording. Wait until the recording ends, then RBR, and your recording will be watchable (unless you get BSOD or IKD which are separate bugs). This is why I call it the "Black Screen of Annoyance."
I had pretty much the same problem with my Tivo 250-10hd. Same result, reset and back to normal.

I don't now if I should put this here but here gos. Following the x11b upgrade my performance went south. The screen will lock up on HD signals and I cannot get any SD signals. I can scroll to those channels but nothing. I get terrible pixilation on some recorded programs...large areas of green. While recording two programs I was locked into only watching those two programs and nothing else. I had none of this before the upgrade(?). The only solution is to turn the surge protector off , wait about a minute and then do a cold boot. The machine is behaving the way a windows box behaves when you are pushing applications past the limits of your RAM.
