Sea Launch Rocket Explodes; DIRECTV HD Rocket Uncertain
The satcaster says it's evaluating options.
By Phillip Swann
Washington, D.C. (January 31, 2007) -- A commercial Sea Launch rocket exploded yesterday, leaving DIRECTV's plans to expand its HDTV capacity in doubt.
Sea Launch has scheduled six commercial satellite deployments this year, including one for DIRECTV.
The satcaster is planning two satellite launches this year to expand its high-def lineup. The first one, a ground launch, should not be affected by the explosion. But the second one, from Sea Launch, could be delayed or even cancelled by yesterday's explosion.
DIRECTV spokesman Robert Mercer told TVPredictions.com this morning that the company is "evaluating our options." He said he could not elaborate at this time.
