Example: Tonight Grey's run time on my guide is from 8-9:03 PM. I also am recording another show from 8-9:01PM this does not allow me to record a show starting at 9PM. This pisses me off to no end. Only if we could adjust the start or end time with the ability of shaving off one minute early or longer instead of only being able to start 5 mins earlier or 5 mins longer. We need one minute increments in either direction.

Other then getting a 2nd DVR... there is nothing much you can do on your end.

Negative padding is a requested feature (which is what you are talking about).

But really the problem is with the networks... they do this on purpose now, to keep people from changing channels. And is not that the show you are watching needs the extra few minutes, it is to keep people there for the next show.

Well their logic is flawed. I think I will fire off an email to the networks. Let's all do this !! I only will stay for the next show if it is one I want to watch.

Well, there is the option to setup a manual recording...but for a series, it's not a particularly attractive one.

I do wish the networks would stop pulling this stuff.

If you have an HR20 and your 9pm recording is on the same channel as either 8pm recording then you're just fine as the HR20 is smart enough to see it's the same channel and will record all 3 at the same time. It's a nice feature over the Tivo which can't do this.

Depending on what the show is that runs until 9:01, the last minute or so could be credits/previews of the next show, etc. You may not miss anything vital if you cut it off one minute early. That would require recording that 9:01 ending show as a manual and setting the stop time at 9:00. I've done that before.
