I'm new to the forum so I apologize if this topic has already been discussed.
When is D* going to expand its HD programming? And what's holding it up?

By the end of 2007 there should be more HD available ....Everything depends on getting the next 2 satellites up in orbit.

Yeah, I've seen on DTV web site that they're talking 70 new HD channels this year. Among them, A & E, History channel, TBS, a bunch of others. Hope so.

Another dumb question...have they announced whether the majority of the new HD channels are going to be added to our existing packages or if we're going to have to shell out more cash each month? I know that 150+ HD channels sounds sweet, but much of the chatter seems to be about more sports and local channels.
More sports = More expensive a la carte packages
More locals = only a good deal if you live in a major metropolitan area
There was recently a post answering your exact question. If I recall correctly, we will be paying an HD Access fee. Any channel you already get an SD version of in your current package will be included for no extra charge. I believe that is how I recall what I read on here.

Pretty much the "more sports" refers to regional sports networks that are already on D*, being distributed nationally in HD instead of only in their home region.
D's big ad campaign is for more national HD channels, and that will come with the launch of their new satellites. They plan to launch two; the second may be delayed, but the first is still on schedule, AFAIK, and D* says that will bring a bunch more national HD.

I'd be very, very happy just with this being added... that way we'd have HD sporting events on the Center Ice and Extra Innings packages instead of just a few HD games a week on channel 95.

So what does this link mean?
http://directv.com/images/pdf/black.pdf
The DIRECTV® HD package is no longer available for sale, but customers who currently subscribe to this package may maintain its current lineup of HD channels for the same fee of $9.99/mo., as long as their account remains in good standing, as determined by DIRECTV in its sole discretion.
I get from it that you can't get HD programming from D* anymore unless you already have it.
Did I read it wrong?
I believe that means that you can't pick up those packages any longer and you have to pick from the new ones.
Those who have had the Directv HD package in the past can keep it and are not forced to choose one of the new selections. "Grandfathered in," as it were.

So will I be able to pick up the other HD channels or would I have to upgrade to the $65/month package to get them?

There will be an HD access fee charge that will allow you to view all HD channels that your subscribed package includes an SD version of.

I just noticed that, myself. And it just came up within the last couple of hours. I was doing a little channel surfing and was going from DiscoveryHD to HDNet Movies and lo and behold, Ch 77 is NGHC with he NG logo and it saying "to be announced". Don't know about anybody else but, that tells me it's coming on soon.

It just populated a show on Tuesday at 2:30 AM EST. Look at the HR20 forum. There is a pretty good thread going there now on the NHGC.
Oddly enough, if you go to Settings > Channel List on the HR10-250, it shows Channel as "77 - NGHC", but the description still shows "NFL Sunday Ticket HD 090". Do the HR20s show the same discrepancy?
(The HR10 info banner, however, does show the NG logo.)

Not sure what Settings-Channel List means, but on the HR20 it shows National Geographic in all areas of the channel guide and banner.

Also on the HR20, Ch 77, it has a program listed on the banner, Upcoming: In the Womb: Multiples, Part 1 and underneath it, it says, 3/6 2:30a-3:18a. Does that mean that come Monday, NGHC will be turned on?
What ai am getting from it is that if you want the HD package with you have to go with at least that package. You can no longer take the lowest priced package and add $10 for HD package like you used to be able to.
So will I be able to pick up the other HD channels or would I have to upgrade to the $65/month package to get them?
