What is the significance of Feb 7th?
I think the OP is asking about the date all ota broadcasts go digital only
that would be 2 years from now anyways.

Could also be referring to the timing of the change in packages.
Will D* start shutting off E/W coasts if your locals are available? They claim to have been doing this all along, but now they claim to be redoubling their efforts.
The way HR10s seem to be dropping like flies lately, I'm not sure it is going to matter.

The OP may be refering to order from the FCC. Any D* sub that CAN get LIL MUST get LIL even if they did not want them. My father in-law has had D* before LIL were offered. He has TC w/o locals + Starz ($43 a month) and will now be required to receive then since he lives in the LA DMA. When I called D* to inquire about him gwtting local the CSR informed me he was in a grandfathered package and would almost double what he was paying in order to receive locals(sound familiar?) so we left what he has alone. Now he will have no choice. I don't know if this will affect what he is paying, I will have to call and find out.
It doesn't seem fair to me that if D* is being required to add a channel that I may not want, to then charge me for it. There should be an option to "opt-out," especially if my rate$ would change! 'Course, it's probably easier to just change everyone's channel lineup than to call each sub, and slimier to just charge them all higher $.
I got the National Channels before the local channels were available in my area. When the locals were available I got them, but kept the National Channels as well. Am I going to have to stop getting the National Channels

dolly,
I am in exactly the same boat as you. From what I have gathered on these forums we are "grandfathered" unless we change our package. There also seems to be mention that the "grandfathered" DNS will be "ungrandfathered" by 2-07-09. I have no idea what the significance of that date is.

Nobody is *required* to get locals. All the packages since 2 years ago include locals in them by default. But you can call and opt out of locals and save $3 a month. With the new packages coming out it could be that you only get that discount if locals aren't available in your market.
What is changing is that if you are in a market where LIL is available then you cannot have the distants (DNS) national stations from NY or LA. It's the law. DirecTV has already been auditing accounts and shutting off DNS for some times but as mentioned above they are now doubling their efforts since the FCC is getting on their case and they don't want to be sued/fined like Dish was.
But you can call and opt out of locals and save $3 a month. With the new packages coming out it could be that you only get that discount if locals aren't available in your market. The new language seems to read more like "if they are available, you must take them; if they aren't, you'll get a credit".
For my purposes, I get excellent OTA coverage for all local channels and have no desire to pay what LIL channels are offered.

my east/west DNS is huge for me. I won't upgrade or change my package until the pry my DNS out of my cold dead hands :hurah:
if they shut us off, I will have no national networks.. my landlord isn't going to allow another dish at 72. plus the trees around my house would limit this..
can my SUBURBAN be considered as an RV since I camp with it?

A Miata can be considered a RV.
can my SUBURBAN be considered as an RV since I camp with it?Only if they let you register it as a motor home. The requirement for an RV waiver is documentation showing your registration of a motor home or travel trailer.

What is truly unfair is that the Government is forcing D* to carry these channels, while NOT forcing the same channels to give D* free access to them. Ie, the Government just added the cost of channels that you can get free, OTA, to the cost of your bill.

Is that the date when TV Broadcasting goes away from SD?
I think the lawsuit with Dish was because they were letting people have distance channels without paying for them or maybe not getting the waivers from stations where locals channels weren't available? I read about this case, but have forgotten the details--sorry. We got the waivers and paid for the distance channels and are still paying for them. Then when out local channels were available we got and paid for them also. We like the distance (or national) channels must better than our local channels. And I don't see why since we did everything correctly they should be taken away from us

Just some information about that "magical" date, they are not going away from SD. The OTA broadcasters are required to switch from analog to digital. Digital broadcasts can still be SD (all of D*'s SD channels are digital). The requirement does not require HD broadcasting, just digital.

Sorry I was thinking SD was analog only. And I know a switch is coming from analog to digital. So I was as usual confused  I have been in many Forums before, but I must say the people here must have the highest I.Q's :)
so no one really knows if you are "grandfathered " or not.. and if you will lose e/w coast feeds.. and again.. how can they take away the feeds when you need another dish to receive the local channels..
isn't there one person who really knows? not one D* insider anymore here? its very disappointing.
not one D* insider anymore here? its very disappointing. The truth seems to be pretty hard to come by at D* these days. The marketroids are riding roughshod over the whole operation.

Well when we got our locals channels (sorry I can't remember when now) we did, of course, have to get the new dish to get them. But we still kept the e/w coast feeds at that time. Now I don't know what they are doing, but I want my e/w coast feeds to remain

As of February 6, 2007, 'New Customers' who have locals available in their area will not have the option to subscribe to a base package without locals. No word yet on how existing customer's subscriptions will be effected.

My acct management does give you options with out locals, in the package change section each package is listed twice, one with locals one without locals.

That is going away with the new packages. Basically once they roll out (another day or two yet)
1) Locals will just be included in all packages.
2) If locals aren't available in your area then you get a $3 a month discount.
