Hey guys, installer will be here on the 19th to install my new hr20plus. When they installed the original dvr they had to run a phone line to the room. Thats cool, they said it HAD to have a phone line plugged into it and I was also cool with this. Heres where the problem happens. The phone line the guy ran doesnt work all that great, i get lots of static on it if a phone is connected and am concerned that caller ID will not work properly because of this. I asked tonight if this could be fixed and the rep told me that it would possibly be considered a custom install. They are the ones that forced me to have the phone line ran, i am on the protection plan with them so i feel this should be covered. I want to move my dsl equipment into this room on this line to connect it to the new DVR so I can have it on my network. Does anyone know if the installer will repair this for me or will I have problems getting it fixed?

I would not expect a DirecTV installer to have much experience dealing with noisy phone lines, unless it's something simple like a loose connection whereever they spliced into your existing phone lines. Just ask them before the scheduled installation.
If I were doing your upgrade and you brought it to my attention I would fix the line.
Since you have the protection plan you can also get a service call on the phone line.
I wouldn't wire it for DSL. The difference is cash.:)

Might be a silly question, but do you have a DSL filter on that line?

I'd call the phone company and get them to take a look at it. The Dtv tech is responsible for installing a phone that the RECEIVER can work on, nothing more. That is, the ones that get paid to put in a phone line. But that's an entirely different discussion.

Well first off they didnt splice into my line at all, they went to the box and added a splitter on the line to run it from there.
This line isnt the phone companies at all. I am on the telco protection plan as well and might just see about having them run me a line.
Thanks Guys.

I was typing that very question at work today and someone came into my office and I never got back to it. I would agree that if you have a protection plan through your phone company, I would take advantage of it.

The only problem is like i said the dtv installer didnt run the line into the box properly. He simply added a splitter at the box and ran the line that way. Obvious problems. I dont think the phone company will support or replace something like that where they didnt run it. Maybe someone else know and i know this is a bit off topic but when on the protection plan with att will they run new lines when coming out for a repair also? I have them coming to fix a jack that is out. The original jack that they will HAVE to fix is about 15 yrs old so they will have to run a new line any way, the only difference is its in a different part of the house. That may be my out then right because actually it will be easier for them to run it to where the DTV box is currently.
