View Full Version : MythTV/FreeVo vs. HR20
So ... what are the odds that a MythTV box will be better than a HR20?
Just curious... maybe I should get an H20 and whip up a FreeVo. Then at least if there's a problem, I know who to blame.

What can you record in HD with a MythTV box? OTA networks only, and/or unencrypted QAM from cable. So most likely no Discovery HD, HDNet, etc., in other words. For many people, just getting OTA in HD is all they really want, so a MythTV box works fine.
That would be fine for me. Problem is single tuner. Well that and no Disney channel!

I'm pretty sure that it's possible to have more than one tuner functional in a PC-based DVR, using MythTV or one of the other DVR software packages. No luck on the Disney channel, unless you want to have a cable or satellite receiver that your PC can change channels on (only SD output would work, however).

I had a mythtv with 3 Dtv recievers, two OTA tuners, and 4 sata drives in a raid 1. The machine could record 5 programs at once, and play three SD streams with no problems. However, I dumped it for an HR20. I watch the D* HD channels 90% of the time.

How many processors did you have in that system? Record 5 shows at once? I'm skeptical.
And how did you get DTV tuners into a PC?

I'm not sure about his setup, but if the tv tuner card he used has a decoder built on it, the cpu would only have to work to get the data on the Hard Drives. I'm looking at builkding one myself. As for DTV tuners, use the directv box with a ir blaster, mythtv then can change the tuner needed to start recording.
The part that records is the Backend, You can use a frontend to watch the videos and dvd's, I've found frontends for like $90, they don't have to be very strong, like 700mhz only. Which is a lot compared to the DirectTv first tivo at 80mhz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TiVo_DVRs
