-- is sent to DirecTV, the system obviously works:

Watched OTA Local for Super Bowl. Rather than guess at padding, I simply told the HR20 to record Criminal Minds [which I wanted to watch] and the Local News [which is predictably mediocre] after the game.

Watched the game from Recorded side. But, virtually the whole game I strayed no further behind than a couple minutes. By the after-game back-patting, I'd shoved it ahead to as close as real time as possible.

Then, looking at the time, I realized the Game Recording had gone beyond the scheduled -- but, it carried on just fine. Partway into Criminal Minds, I switched over to the CM recording > saw it recording just fine > deleted the Super Bowl recording > proceeded to finish watching CM as a recording.

And that recording carried through to the end > and on into the news broadcast > even though well beyond the scheduled time. Deleted the CM recording > switched into the news > etc..

This suggests another experiment sometime today. Because it appeared that scheduling a couple programs like that -- presuming correct Guide data -- I could have stayed with the first and watched all the way through the following.

Oh -- and Earl, I'm sorry for your loss.

I got thinking further on this experience.

Usually on a Wednesday night > with a couple of murder mysteries in a row > I have the same situation on CBS. Yet, the predictable result is the "Yes/No/Delete" dialogue at the end of the first show and then I proceed to the next recording.

I wonder if CBS/D* provided open-ended padding at their end, last night, so that no one could complain about padding settings spoiling a recording of the game?
