View Full Version : Stood Up- DUMPED DIRECTV
I was supposed to be upgraded today to my HR20 between 1pm-5pm. At 4:45 I get a call from the installer telling me he can't make it. This set off a flurry of calls between me & DirecTv which culminated with me DUMPING DirecTv.
It would be much too much to try and explain everything that went on in the numerous calls I had with D. Suffice to say that I spoke with 8 different ppl including 2 supervisors. I can't recall encountering such incompetence in many moons. What a bunch of IDIOTS!! After voicing my frustration with the cancelled
service call, I was told that there are NO HR20's available for 2 months, this after I was suppsoed to be installed today. When I asked if they could just put in HD receivers until the HR20 came in, I was told they can't do that.
Well, they now have lost a very long time good customer. Glad to know they are doing so well that they can afford to lose customers . GUESS WHAT??
I called up DISH Network and am being installed on Friday with THEIR DVR. I'm getting their top package with locals and the superstation package and the HD package for less than I would have paid D on a per month basis. A HD box on another set and they are throwing in a standard satellite box on a televeison which hadn't been hooked up to D before.Instead of dealing with many knuckleheads, I now have a rep that seem excited to get me as a customer and I have a number in which I will deal with him at all times. Refreshing.
I am sorry to leave D and am not gloating . I have been a long time customer since having been blended in when D bought out Primestar. It just seems amazing to me that a company tells you what a valuable customer you are, then treats you in a different manner:nono2: So GOODBYE D, HELLO DISH:)

Hope you feel better after venting - I don't blame you for dumping them. Nothing worse than feeling like you are worthless to a company.
Did you ask to speak to retention? They are pretty skilled at solving these kinds of problems. I bet if you called back and asked to speak to them, you might get a little farther.

It's unfortunate that it comes down to random luck on which CSR's you get, but that does seem to be the way it works at D*. Sorry about what happened. I can imagine the frustration. Hope you're ok with no EI or NFLST.

Was your reason for leaving because of the missed appointment... or because of the handling afterwards?
As I can understand the installer missing the appointment today. 5+ inches of snow today, with a constant fall all day, so made driving around the southsdie of chicago difficult at best... Took me 30 minutes to go 7 miles to get home today.... Then there was the high of 5 degrees (if that). With wind chills below Zero.

I did speak with retention and a supervisor in retention. I told them the only way they could have satisfied me was by having me connected by Friday. That is when they told me there wasn't ny HR20's available for several months.
What really amazed me was that, according to them, you cannot get a HD box installed while awaiting a HR20 They couldn't give me a reason why, just that it can't be done. :nono2: I didn't have NFLST.

The handling afterwards! If they would have installed HD boxes while I awaited an HR20,I would still be a customer.
Just to be very clear, did the installer have your HR20 on the truck, or did he wait until 4:45 to call you because he didn't have a HR-20?

When he called, he said that because of the weather, they were running behind and that they probably wouldn't make it out today. After subsequent converastions with D reps, I'm sure that he never had the HR20's on his truck. One of them told me I DIDN'T ORDER THE DVR, that the order was for just HD boxes. Now I know that IS NOT WHAT I ORDERED. So I'm pretty sure now that even if he had shown up, he wouldn't have had the HR20's.
I'm still trying to figure out why one can't have HD boxes installed while awaiting the DVR's.:nono:

good for you. these big companys seem to forget about customer service and doing what it takes to get and keep a happy custumer. the truth is the people you are talking with over the phone dont give a crap most of the time if you stay or if you go its no money out of there pocket and when none of the csr or the sups or even the sups boss's care your just out of luck. i know i work for a big company and that sadly is a joke oww the cust said they where going to leave ha ha what do i care. man i hate dealing with big companys

Two things:
1. On the CSR's not caring issue: you're probably right about that, but for retention it might be different. They might be evaluated on the % of saves they get vs. the dollars they hand out (at least that's probably how I'd run it).
2. I've seen various posts about D* saying people didn't order what they think they did. After you place the order, go onto the site, log on, and click on View Orders. This should list what you requested. If it's wrong, call them and get it fixed well before installation day so everyone's on the same page and you have documentation.
Good Luck with DISH. I was going to dump D for DISH because D won't carry The Tennis Channel and DISH does.
So I had my appointment time with DISH. No one showed up and no one called me from DISH. And when I called DISH I didn't even get as much as I'm sorry from anyone. They just said that I would have to reschedule the appointment. I told them to forget it I would stick with D. So with these big companies sometimes you win, but most of the time you don't  :(

I feel your pain. NOTHING pisses me off more than a broken agreement. If a company can't do X and is out of Y, that's cool, just tell me. Don't tell me "Yes, you're getting Y and we can do X" and then change the story. I can work with anyone. I will NOT pay to be lied to. Ever.

So Dolly, did you end up switching? If D doesn't have The Tennis Channel by May (French Open), I'll be jumping ship.

No I stuck with D. The people at DISH had their chance. If one person I had talked with acted like they cared about my problem I might have made a new appointment. But they didn't. I had always wondered why D seemed so dead set against The Tennis Channel. I have been after them to get it for a good while now  But after I started reading about the MLB EI deal plus more HD for D I figure that is where their money is going :(

Funny you say this about today. I saw two different DirecTV trucks stuck in traffic on the Kennedy. This was on the northwest side and we were only moving about 5 - 10 MPH. The first thing I thought of when seeing the trucks was somebody was going to get canceled today.
I was supposed to be upgraded today to my HR20 between 1pm-5pm. At 4:45 I get a call from the installer telling me he can't make it. This set off a flurry of calls between me & DirecTv which culminated with me DUMPING DirecTv.....
I know the feeling, my experience with my upgrade to an HD DVR (HR20) was about the same. As an "A-List" customer too (been with them for 10 or more years now) I was more than mad after wasting 3 different 1/2 days over the summer waiting for them to show, fix problems they could not figure out with the new dish, not having a DVR avail, etc. I too spoke to 3 or more supervisors, etc. I was really unhappy with how I was treated.
But what I came to realize was that my issue was with the local installer who DirecTV contracts with. You might have got the same company (Apex I think was the name). After talking with a senior installer they finally sent out to clean up my installation, he went on to tell me all the issues they have with getting and keeping quality installers and how supervisors overschedule the good ones and they end up leaving when pushed too hard.
Not making an excuse, DirecTV should really care about the quality of the contractors they hire.... But I did contact customer rentention to complain about all the time I wasted and asked if they would pay my $150/hr consulting rate for my wasted time. In the end, they did end up giving me some additional features like SuperFan for free, removing my HD fee for a few months, and giving me $100 off my new HD receiver. I was still mad but at least I felt like they did appreciate my business.

Too late to help the OP but some have posted that instead of waiting they went to Circuit City or Best Buy for the HR20 and get a lot of the cost credited back by D*. Might be worth a try for someone else in this situation.
And the H20 is $99 at Wal-Mart.
You know I think some of the problems with companies including D dealing with people now is the computer :( Everyone is so used to dealing with computers, but they are forgetting fast how to deal with people  BTW I loved the Avatar section  I assume there will be other choices in the future, but I couldn't resist :)
It reminds me of what they used to say about "Coming soon to a theater near you"
I've let D*'s licensed installers do 3 installs/upgrades for me. Each time I was able to choose the day (they all were within days of my call), the installers arrived during the scheduled range (2 coming within 10 minutes of the beginning range), and the work was exceptionally well-done.
For calls to D* for activating receivers or the like, I've always gotten a very polite CSR who helped me immediately.
Sorry you had a bad experience. All of my experiences with them have been top-notch and I couldn't be happier.

Good for you. I had a similar experience and I wrote to the prez about it. I got a call from their office within a week and they attempted to fix the problem. They offered some incentives and pretty much begged me not to leave. Hence, I am giving D* one more chance.
I applaud your actions.

Same thing happened with me with a twist. I get a call DirecTV, sounds like the installer, he says the guy will be to my place by 10:00AM. My appointment was scheduled for between 8:00AM and 12:00PM.
So I think great, he will be here soon. He calls back in about 30 minutes, says that the installer is running late, won't be able to make it until 11:00AM.
I waited, and it the clock hit 12:50PM. I called DTV and the REP I receive tells me that I had called to cancel! This is such a bunch of crock, I almost went ballistic... I ended up waiting 30 minutes to talk to a supervisor, and was hung up on!
Alas, DTV never showed up. A manager I got on the line. An incompetent one at that. PROMISED me the next Saturday appointment, 1st thing.
They ended up showing up in the middle of the week. Refused to install in my kitchen. Half A$$ install job in my basement. HDTV channels are less than desired. Mind you, in NYC you don't even get channels 9, 11, and 13 in HD.
Should have gone with FIOS. One can only hope they get more channels they promised.
DIRECTV has some major, major issues with their scheduling and whoever they are contracting for the installs. I too am a long time subscriber and they treat us like crap....
Anywho... I have HDTV Lite now, guess I shouldn't complain too much.

I'm sorry to hear all the bad problems on this thread. I have had nothing but good luck with my installers. When i first got D* the installers were great. The went way beyond what i though they would. Even hid wires for me. This last time the installer didn't speak english that well but he still did a great Job. I was so suprised when D* told me that he would install on the saturday before new years and even more suprised to hear that if that wasn't good for me he would show up on new years eve. I was expecting a no show but right at the beginning of the window he showed.
I couldn't understand anything he was saying when he tried to teach me the DVR but that was also a god send because i probably wouldn't have found this board otherwise.
Hang in there. There are good installers out there.
Good Luck with DISH. I was going to dump D for DISH because D won't carry The Tennis Channel and DISH does.

Similar for a friend, he is on his 4th appointment - 1 didn't show then next 2 they didn't have the right equipment with the installer. I almost wonder if the same subcontractors work for both. Consumer protection laws need to be tightened. People take time off from work for these appointments and it is bad enough to wait 3 1/2 of the 4 hour window but a no show or show with no equipment, the consumer should be awarded $250 for these. I'll bet the problems would disappear quickly. Or maybe a customer satisfaction survey after an install which would effect how much the installer (and company) got paid for an install.
How often has this happened to you...You know **** happens right?
It is not so much that **** doesn't happen, it does. It is how it is cleaned up that is the difference. Being treated shabbily by the ppl that are supposed to be helping you and being jerked around by a company that tells you you are one of their best customers(I wonder how they treat the less than best customers), is too much.
It is not that I didn't try to get something done. I told one of the last supervisors I talked to that the installers could come the next day and just put in two HD boxes and when the HR20 became available they could come back and swap them. I was told that they can't do that. I asked why?? Couldn't give me a real definitive answer. When I asked for a number to call during business hours to talk with someone a little higher up, I was told I had to write. So I bailed out. Now I have DISH coming on Friday and the rep said they have no trouble installing a DVR. I'm looking forward to trying DISH. Since I didn't get NFLST or EI , that was of no concern.

I also had Apex do the installation of my HR 20-700. Apex screwed-up the installation and it took two more installers to fix the mess. I personally over-heard the D installer phone-in a complaint on the Apex installer! As with any business, good people are hard to find. The lesson so many companies (and labor unions) fail to learn: when you have an outstanding employee- pay them top dollar to keep them. My two cents.
It's Friday. DISH told me a installer would be at my house between noon and 5pm. Guess what?? HE CAME EARLY,11am!! AND WITH MY HD DVR!! Companies living up to what they tell you-What a novel idea!!:D

You are lucky. If DISH had shown up at my house earlier this year when they were supposed to, I would now have The Tennis Channel :( But people in my family other than me were set against DISH, but finally after many months I talked them into changing to DISH for The Tennis Channel. Then DISH blows it by not showing up so that confirmed to my family that DISH wasn't any good :( If I would have only found this Forum earlier I could have showed them that D doesn't always get to people's houses either. But I didn't know about the Forum at that time :( Of course, maybe it was just as well because I had forgot since I added an interactive receiver last Sept. I was conmitted to D anyway.

That is just ridiculous statment.
Did you not read his post? They told him at 4:45 of a 1-5 appointment time that they had no HR20's and wouldn't have for two months. They knew prior to his appointment that they didn't have any available and certainly knew before 4:45.

First there is no shortage of HR20. The department stores are loaded with them.
Second if you ordered a HR20 ,, Dtv would sent it Fed-X within 2 days.
And the installer will change your dish to the 5-lnb dish.

I'm just curious about where you got that information? Everything I have read, experienced tells me that D* will NOT send an HR20 in any manner other than with the installer. Heck, if D* would send them to the customer, most people would either install themselves or through an independent and have it done right and a lot quicker. I'm thinking the install success rate might be a little higher, too?

WOW... did YOU actually say this? (lol)
You can Now even go on the D* website if your a NEW cx and By pass this HSP stupidity all together. http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/findRetailer.jsp?assetId=500016
Ask one question when the Company comes up from your Zip code.
"Do you use the HSP or MSP install program". They Say "no".. you'll be in good shape. (lol but true!)
Anybody that visits this forum that uses this 1800 D* mess is a plain and simple fool especially if they read this forum and already know what they are facing..
I just got another call today from a Upgrade cust of 3 No call shows already.. and this guy just wants help No more Misery. He finally just Bought his Hr-20 and i again go do the job in 1-2 days.
Btw i saw reference to some guy in here calling these people "licenced installers".. Are You Kidding me? They dont have a license, they arent even properly trained little lone with a badge or paper. Poster who made that comment , what fantasy world do you live in? Keep on letting these people mess with your phone lines too. Heck the grade wire they use IS NOT even legal by code in certain areas period Either as a fact.
Then i saw in here where somebody said " the D* CSR told me , the installers get 200$ a job... WHAT? Try from 6.40$ cent an hr to 38/12 piece rate and 30-45$ per upgrade. You people kill me with this mess.
= Dirt change and nothing but compariable to the 1800's and the railroad days
and/or 3rd world slave labor backed by simple inflicted hard line mafioso styled tyranny. Its a fact.. It IS In court rms across this Nation, and being combatted by the 2 strongest unions in this country. Its Nothing But Price fixing and slave labor driven GREED. D* pays these people they gave these No bid contracts to well.. Thats where these 200$ numbers come from. The Hsp ARE aware that this tech force of the underpaid and trained create More
service calls also, and use this to their advantage after 90 days. If the Cx gets the warrenty pack.. they still get paid.. The tech rolls on a job NOT installed by a HSP in the first 90 days, D*charges Back the orig installer or Company 100$. Thus the HSp's and D* will Love to get you to call them.
It a racket people .. Plain and damn simple! One revolving door of dirty money.
Now you people wonder why i laugh so much when i come through here..
the crap I read here is frankly Unreal and must come out of the air OR from Pro- D* backed influence(which i spot that w/o a doubt all the time here). I watch these HSp techs do it all the time in here as well and they dont even know what they are saying either. They Just repeat those closed captured meetings they are forced to listen too and WITHOUT pay at that.= Brain washed. You ought to hear what these :white vans" tell me. Its 180 degress backwards from reality. They have No clue just what those tryranny driven bosses of them tell them. I can pretty much guarentee
my rate from certain retailers will TRIPLE their rate and these so-called puppy installers dont even know what the going rate is for an install. If they get less than 70/20 in their own private trucks.. they are a idiot and being Robbed w/o a pistol while some already rich man sits still and pushes a button every night over e-mail to where their routes will go and takes their money fro doing Nothing.
Wonder why there is so many Nc/Ns's.. even what you people go through these people will NOT let go of GREEEEED. They could care less about any of you! Its MONEY and RAPE of that money that drives them PERIOD.
FYI info in 1995-96 i got paid 199$ per install.. Now look what these people
get and D* still pays close to the same exact money they always did.
Today i still get for my fufilled retailer jobs (non private calls) about 160 for an HD install. So even I have taken a rate decrease over the years. But good greif im not out sweating and climbing for 38 dollars either.. That whole thing flips me out.. I cant imagine these guys even doing this, EXCEPT for the new hirees that have overwelmed the HSP's that are Ex min wage workers. Thats pretty much the D* work force. And im Not lieing over 80% of each and every one of them i talk to came from a Restraunt and no where else (Micky d' ruby tuesday.. you name it). So like i joke with My cust, or with people on this site and others.. You want a good Hamburger? Call D* and get the installer to fix you one while YOU yourself take the EQ out of the truck and put it in.. This mess sure aint a Big Mac.! (lmao)
Stay away from the HSP as a tech, as Moral person(dont support this period as in Wallmart type), and simply if you want a real install dont even call 1800 nothing .. call a local technician.. SUPPORT YOUR community Not these racketteers without a face that run the whole country with lies and deceipt and NO care..... Well that is pretty much the moral to all this story.
Have a good day.. you people of enduring patience. Ill give you guys that much anyway.:)

I called in a service call and my parents fliped out about how long it was going to be so the next day my dad called directv and talked to them. my dad got Ironwood to come out the next day after to re-alien my dish . this happened in Janurary. directv told me that it was going to be feb 9, 2007. so now I got my new dish

Ya gotta love Bamatech's posts. Every couple of weeks he lets one loose. :)
ITS a BIG BIG SpLAshhH!... Of simple defined Reality with Flair is ALL.;)
Heck anybody that refers to this mess of today as a Trade or Professional installtion(BIGGGEST LIE D* MAKES).. is lieing to theirselves. Its abunch of lost puppies directed by tyranist of Greed and deciet backed by Lawlessness and intimidation.
I could list enough names here with Proof .. to where maybe you people would agree.. that BARS are needed for their blatant disregard for federal
"White collar instances" & infractions of the dictated law that this country was built on in respect for the protection of the Amer wk force.
Trust me ...Wallmart IS a SAINT! in comparison.
These are Your HSP's people.
D* refuses to correct it and keeps the contracts in tact and then regulates all these stipulations to the HSP's and then dont even make 'em follow it.
For instance i have in my posession at this very moment a E-mail blast concerning the HSP vs the sub ratio as dictated By the HSP contract.
What a joke.. ! There isnt 80% of the white vans even rolling and some of them Still have never rolled anywhere to this day and are surrounded by Grass in a dark parking lot and never had a driver one!. BUT D* says BY CONTRACT that the HSP's Must Keep a 80-85% ratio of subs vs in house employees.. Well that dont exist any where and there is not that many Fools stupid enough to get near that mess. No REal techs will get near it period and laugh at the Initials HSP. AND YET You people in general still have to wait forever and/or look out the window all day for somebody not to even call or show up...
The Work is given to the racketteers and then since they dont have any techs hardly to keep up w/ work load.. the work is subbed out and then out again with each piece of this puzzle sitting still and pulling money from EACH install and then all these make believe Charge Backs and mess implimented upon the techs and they just end up simply Robbed and make Dirt!. Heck as this forum posted here his/her install came out of a hotel room. (lol) But thats one of the truest things ive ever seen printed here involving D* installations. At one time around here when the HSP did all the Illegal fireing for these guys standing up and wanting representation
to stop this mess and rate cut after rate cut which were all based on lies... well.. you could drive up one interstate for over a 100 miles and stop at most any hotel and find a large group of D* techs. Your HSP was headquartered at Best western.. (lol) When union talk came to stop the insanity the HSP's fired all their long time techs for suporting Unions and then made it where the POV's (personal operated vehicles) were forced to quit and wouldnt give them enough work to survive and made them drive far VS the "white vans" geting all the close jobs and easy installs. (Purposely down AS A provable FACT). Thus Now You see your "D" wk force or lack of i mean. Undermanned, over worked and NO tenure.
**The "young and impressionable" was formed before your Eyes with illegal tactics and initiatives. The rates were set at their prices and UNDER fair market value. Remember now... these HSP's have different names in alot of circumstances But they Are Not and Members of each HSP set on the Other HSP"S Board or have very close ties either by paper or otherwise. THUS NATION WIDE PRICE FIXING and dictation under monopolization WITHOUT BID.
Well what does all that Equal? ..hmm... =What this forum prints all day every day!
Well there ya go forum.. theres you some DEEP TRUTH this time!
Seems like to me the rest of what i see here is this notorious thing said By HSp's and CSr's to "calm the cx's" (what i read here).. And is simply what i refer to as >> "the dog ate my homework".. I wonder how many of you have been told that "the installers truck broke down" even.. lol.. Thats the oldest and truest "the dog ate my hm wk" there is . Then all these No Line of sites (you people cant have satellite OR *the 5 LNB as said By techs./. trees ect). Those a lot of the time are because the job is too hard AND will take to long due to the pay. Just like i said the tech Looses money to put D* on your TV's.. Thus its a fake NLOS and again.. "whoops the dog ate my hm work".. Lmao
Ill quit , rambling for a while (2weeks LOL maybe), But you people dont really Know Now do you?.. Thats where i guesss i come in:)
Maybe its called ...
Welcome to the TRUTH!
I think you should of told him to come back at 12:00pm since he was to early for the appointment. :p
I considered that:lol: NOT.
The young man took about 3 hours to hook up my three tv's, one with the DVR, one HD and one standard. Did a nice neat job. I was enjoying the service two minutes after he left and I gave the DVR a workout last night. Worked flawlessly. Let us hope it stays that way.

:beatdeadhorse: One only reason to be pissed off with DirecTV, and note the installer might have gotten arrested for taking a leak on the sidewalk. All, I can say is DirecTV is having problems with there HR20 units, and Dish Network is appealing a verdict on there DVR units, since TIVO took Dish to court. The injunctions and mishaps, our ones that hurt us. I am more, so pissed off with our local broadcasters. LIFE IS TOUGH. David K. Rehr minutes which Craig Jahelka-KERO TV 23 gave me, lashes out at every DVR industry. Replay tv, TIVO, Dish Network, DirecTV, and local cable companies providing DVR units to there viewers. If cable tv didn't get involved, maybe I wouldn't think this way, but David K. Rehr and National Association of Broadcasters our F..N. idiots. The letter describes DVR'S hurting local broadcasters and there f..n..revenue. So, I figure lets screw 100 million DVR users. DVR'S and distant networks ON N.A.B.'S list.:(

First there is no shortage of HR20. The department stores are loaded with them.
Second if you ordered a HR20 ,, Dtv would sent it Fed-X within 2 days.
And the installer will change your dish to the 5-lnb dish.
:nono:
My installer brought the HR20 - just like he brought the other 4 receivers that I have... where does FedEx fit into the picture?
