I live in a townhouse complex. I share my bldg with one other owner. It's like a duplex but is part of a complex with, of course, a Homeowners Assoc. My neighbor in my bldg had Dish Network install 2 dishes on the roof over his place about 3 years ago or so. The extra dish is for International programming. The HOA wasnt happy but they let him be. I dont want to risk the HOA's wrath and would like the Dish Network to set up service for me using those same dish or dishes.

Is it possible? I asked the phone rep but got a not too definitive answer. Also, do you think the installer will go along with this plan?

I have set up my own Dish Network account. So it wouldn't be a matter of me trying to rip off Dish Network. I just don't want to try to get my HOA to go along with more stuff on the roof.

Thanks.

What happens if the neighbor moves and takes the dish with him ?? He likely won't, but could...

What you could do is tell Dish nothing about this on the phone. Make sure the neighbor is home when the installer arrives and confirm between everyone that you want to share the dish. You need to have the installer leave the "extra" dish, LNBs, switches, etc with you though. You will be under a lease term, most likely, whereas the neighbor may or may not be. When you cancel service, Dish will want their equipment back, less the dish itself though.

A lot has to do with the installer or installation company. If you check with a local dealer, you would be much better off that going through some unidentified installation company, to which, Dish subcontract's the installation.

By all means, check with the landlord and the other tennant. I'd make sure that the installer leaves the Dish and lnb to which you are entitled to, so that you and give it to the tennant, if he or she decides to move out and want to take his dish and lnb with him. In some lease contracts, the customer is obligated to return the lnb to Dish Network.

Disclaimer:I'm not up on the current rules, but many on this forum are.

I believe the HOA has no say in this matter(although they may think otherwise). You are allowed under federal law to place the dish on your owned property. There are restrictions as to size(1 meter if I remember correctly).

The HOA's rath can be wrought in some other unrelated manner. If that's what you're worried about, the law is irrelevant.

My prob as far the HOA's power is that my only workable spot for the dish is the roof. And the roof is not an area under my exclusive control. So I think they do have the right to not let me put it there. Whether they know that, I can only guess.

Not a good position to be in if you ever have any reception/recording problems, or if your neighbor has reception/recording problems.

I am having deja vu... I swear we had a similar conversation about this last year at some point...

In any event, what happens if the neighbor moves and the new neighbor doesn't want to continue the agreement or they cancel satellite altogether and want the stuff off their roof?

Even if it can be made to work, I'd be hesitant to tie my stuff to a neighbor's stuff like that.

Technically, the equipment will work
(provided there is enough ouputs for all receivers)
for multiple accounts.
E* probably woudn't approve it (if they are asked).
But there is nothing actually illegal about it.
The receivers signal source is not really invovled in having ... legit account (s).
Get permisson from neighbor and clear the install with a local installer.
So what if he moves, even if takes the dishes (which is unlikely) you could easily have new ones mounted exactly like they are.
If you are new to E* then ask the installer if he can leave the dish/lnb he would have used for a new install(keep them stored).
Just get your neighbors permisson and clear it with a local installer, first!

Your only problem is if your neighbor is utilizing most or all the outputs on the existing LNB's or switches, then the installer will not leave or may not have the additional equipment needed to add your receivers to the same dish(es). If you have a four-room scheduled, Dish will only reimburse the installation company for the equipment needed to install a four-room, not your four and say, your neighbors three or four. Keep in mind that even if you are able to add your rcvrs to the existing set-up, any additional switches/LNBs will require that your neighbors receivers be reset to recognize this equipment. Not a major task, but necessary. I wouldn't worry about your neighbor taking the dishes. Dish installs new ones @ the new addresses, anyway. :icon_cool
