There goes my Cw sub channel guide. Scott G. said that Dish removed the guide information because of problems created by the sub guide information . I wonder if the problems created by the sub channel guide information had anything to do with the problems I had with it. I would make a recording from a manual timer and I would get a corrupted recording . If I did use the ota guide information it would record a one hour show but show 2 hours on the recording. Then when it got to the end of the first hour I would have to fast forward at 300x to get to the end of the recording.

Well there goes my CW as well. Darn!

I guess its okay since I only care about CW on Thursday and there is another program I'd rather record. Thank goodness I still have KTLA! :-D Wednesdays and Thursdays I am burning up my DVR!

See ya

I guess they didnt want me to manage the Subchannel chart. They're eliminating its need!

Just when I was getting used to having the right guide info -- BAM -- it's gone on the subchannels, and on PBS.

Why would they do this?

Is there any OTA guide data left?

On the plus side... if any of this excess of info was causing problems for some users... then it is good of them to back it out and reinvestigate.

Hopefully they figure out a better way to handle the data and can get things going in the future... I know I enjoyed the 1 day I had OTA subchannel data last week!

Is there any OTA guide data left?Only for channels that are also broadcast over the satellite. :(

I reported a problem several months ago on the OTA guide data in the 14,000 range with Dish Tech Support.
They put in all of the 6 Nebraska PBS channels which had each 4 digital sub channels. Thats 6 times 4 = 24 14,000 channel maps.

None of them ever worked. Nebraska PBS also called Dish. I had a ticket with Dish tech support. It was never fixed after months.

Maybe they found the solution and the fix is to roll it all back and then redo the sub channel mappings on something new.

Some of my OTA mappings did work. Just not all. There was a problem from day one.

I know of others in other DMAs that had similar problems with other 14,000 channels and there guide data mapping down to the the digital sub channel.
It just did not always work. This is why I think they had to roll most of it back.

If hope they get this fixed because Direct TV has a working solution in place, so I know it can be done. Maybe they should just try to follow what direct tv is doing

More importantly I hope they do not forget about us and stop working on the fix. This is very important as I get an Independent Station, Two MYTV stations and PBS 1,2,3 and 4

Only for channels that are also broadcast over the satellite. :(
I still have EPG info for OTA subchannels that aren't available via Sat. 2 Sacto PBS (KVIE) 6-01 and 6-02, 5 SF PBS (KQED) 9-01 thru -05, SF's "KGO-" 7-03 has 4 hour blocks of "HD Doppler" (sure wish Digital Service were 4 hour blocks!). I may be gone with next week's purge, but there are still some non-sat subchannels available. LOTS more Digital Service now.

So customers in the areas that are still receiving the sub-channel guide data and have these memory-limited receivers are going to continue to have problems....

Not necessarily. What has already been removed may be all that was necessary to get under the limit. If that is truly the issue.

Cant they do like with Direct TV does and use Spot beams for Guide data. That way you only get guide data for locals for your spot beam or for Digital Sub channels for your area. No overloading memory that way.

Just an idea, Dish are you listening hint hint hint.

I cant record HAWAii- 5-O or the old Mission impossible with out my OTA sub channel guide data.
Lets not also forget the old Wild Wild West shows.

And the wife cant record Orphra.

I get Two different Mynetwork TVs and one Independent all OTA on sub channels.

We are not happy. We pay $5 a month for guide data. We want it back please.

They may need to rewrite the way the guide is downloaded (ignoring entries in the stream for channels that are not on a person's receiver). I thought the receivers already did this. In the case of non-DVR receivers, they have a few days worth of guide data, correct ?? Newer (522 and on) DVR receivers have nine days worth. I agree with you that it should only download 3 days worth if that's all it can display or 9 days worth if it can display that much.

As far as downloading ALL of the, in this case, virtual channel data, maybe that's the problem or it leads to the problem. The receivers have capacity for all the analog local data (nationwide) but now you've easily doubled or tripled the amount. Presuming every analog channel has at least one related digital channel, you get double. Many stations have a main digital channel and a sub-channel. What we don't want is Dish restricting the guide data (and sub-channel data) to our local market. Plenty of people can receive stations via OTA from multiple markets.

You said to "ignore entries in the stream for channels that are not on a person's receiver". What do you mean ?? That if you don't subscribe to a channel, not to download the guide data ?? That would negate having the "All Chan" toggle in the guide selection....

Hall

We pay $5 a month for guide data. We want it back please. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Dish supplies guide data for the channels they supply you. They don't supply the OTA channels, so supplying us the guide data for them is a "freebie". Sure, I want it myself, but if they don't or even do supply it then take it away, I have no $$$ grounds to complain on.

James Long

I agree with you that it should only download 3 days worth if that's all it can display or 9 days worth if it can display that much.Non DVRs get 44 hours, DVRs get 9 days (including my 501). The data comes from two different streams. The 44 hour guide is available at each and every active satellite location, the full 9 day guide is available only on 119°. (There is also a now/next guide on every active transponder, but that only has data for what is on now and on next for every channel.)You said to "ignore entries in the stream for channels that are not on a person's receiver". What do you mean ?? That if you don't subscribe to a channel, not to download the guide data ?? That would negate having the "All Chan" toggle in the guide selection....If you cannot receive a channel, regardless of the choice of subscription, your receiver should ignore the data.

For example, while the receiver is spooling through the data it should toss all hidden channels unless one has subscribed (this would be all locals except your own and any other unsubscribed hidden channel). I thought it already did this since when locals are added to an account the EPG isn't instantly added. Also the receiver should ignore any channel on a satellite not in the customer's system (I don't need a guide for channels on 148° and 121° since I don't have a dish that picks those up). I thought it already did this too since the EPG is redownloaded when a Check Switch is done and the satellite lineup changes.

As noted, I thought it already did this, so the size of the download issue should have already been solved. If there is a tech issue with this I'd look more at the receivers that would use the data (211/411/622/811/921/942 etc) and not the ones that would discard it.

The only issue I see with receivers discarding the data is the length of time it takes to spool through all that data. Think of it as a congested network ... your packets carrying your data to your machine come slower because other people's packets are also on that network. If the network only carrys the packets your machine needs the download comes faster.

I'm sure E* will come up with something ... it just may take a little time.

Can they target these virtual channels to specific receiver models ?? Someone mentioned the 301 receivers possibly having too little memory to hold this data. Well, why is the 301 even trying to get this data ?? It can do nothing with it.

For example, while the receiver is spooling through the data it should toss all hidden channels unless one has subscribed (this would be all locals except your own and any other unsubscribed hidden channel). That would mean if you upgrade from AT60 to AT120 or even add a movie tier, you'd have to do a complete guide download though. It also would stop me from getting Cincinnati local guide data that I could pick up OTA when I only subscribe to Dayton locals. I don't like that idea....

I'm with you... That's how I thought the EPG worked already. I thought that the receiver updated the EPG by "looking" for it periodically, and then downloading the information but ignoring channels that were not possible on that receiver. "Not possible" channels would include channels on a satellite that the receiver does not yet see (like channels on 148 if you don't have a dish pointed there) as well as channels not available in your area (like all the LIL for the entire US when you can only get your DMA).

But maybe the receivers just aren't that smart yet... and are downloading the whole bagillion channel EPG for channels you could never view in your area... and storing all that info, just not showing it to you... and maybe they did overload some receiver models (particularly legacy models I would suspect).

IF this is the problem... then they'd have to re-write software for all receivers probably to be smart enough to ignore and not store data based on where the receiver is located... but the only way they can do that is if the receiver has your ZIP code or something in it to use as a basis for throwing away data. Maybe more or less difficult than I'm imagining, but still new code for all receivers.

Pure speculation of course... but if this is the problem, it would make sense... and is fixable but may be some time coming.

Hall

I'm positive that the receivers do ignore channels from satellites not being looked at or rec'd from. People talk about the HD demo channel. I've no idea even what channel # it is because even when I put the guide into "All Chan" display, that channel doesn't appear. Why ?? 'cause I don't have a dish pointed at 61.5'.

CABill
02-08-07, 03:22 PM
I think they try to take care of the "zipcode limits" by associating all the OTA subchannel info with specific spotbeams. My location gets nearby DMAs on the same spot (different trs) but it is safe to ignore the info for all spots I don't see which could rule out a LOT of the additions that dissappeared.

They would still take a good deal of time in the current/next loop on all transponder which has to contain everything.

If nothing else, how about Dish add back the sub-channel data for the channels that matter.

Here we lost PBS-HD guide data. All of the other sub-channels were just weather or radar.

So why not just uplink up our PBS-HD data and forget the rest?

Note I wrote HIDDEN channels ... except for the music channels, the non-subscribed channels one would get by upgrading AT packages or adding movie packages are not hidden.

Any hidden channels added during the day would show EPG for now and next, just like new channels do before a complete EPG can be downloaded. I noticed when I added an out of market OTA Fort Wayne channel to my receiver that I didn't get EPG immediately, but during the overnight EPG download the guide was populated (and I still get that data).

As noted, I believe that is the way that E* is already running the data streams and EPG. Which is why the idea of "too big" as far as storage size doesn't seem right ...

The behavior I have witnessed matches what I would expect from a "properly" written EPG program that would discard unneeded information and keep the file size as small as possible. Perhaps there is an older model out there that isn't that smart. The new ones are showing all signs of being programmed right.

Thats approximantly another 80 channels of guide data (NJ digital channels, philly digital channels,NYC digital channels, allentown digital channels) Could that be causing congestion or possibly a memory overload on some older receivers? the reciver would have to download all guide data to provide program info on out of market signals correct? Here is my experience with subchannel guide data (on a 921).

You may get a few suchannel listings, that may or may not be the correct listings. When you do get see them in the EPG you can also see the program's info.

Normal up to now, but here is where things get weird:
IF you are actually watching the subchannel and hit "info" I get "Info not available" ?!? Also the browse-banner has a different name then what is listed in the EPG "WVIZ2", "WKYC2" etc. For DVR's I bet the missing/altered browse-banner information is causing the recording malfunctions. I have not tried recording a listed subchanel program yet myself to confirm, however I bet this has to be causing some issues.

So from my observation, the subchannel data that is being supplied is not as complete as the "main channels" data.

As for PBS, there is no standardization among PBS stations as to how they use subchannels. The SD feed that on a commercial station would be the ".1" For a PBS station the SD channel might be .2 or .3, or not carried digitally at all. I was getting "Local Programming" for WVIZ 25.1 when one day the PBS HD guide showed up! Guess what, the browse banner had "WVIZ1" insted of the program name. So here was a case where the main channel, not the subchannel got the same treatment as a subchannel (since the LIL WVIZ data should have mapped to 25.3). My other local PBS has their main feed SD channel on 49.2. Even though they are carried LIL the guide data gets mapped to 49.3 with an incorrect "off air" listing for prime time.

As I posted in the 921 forum, PBS must be driving the E* EPG techs nuts!

As for PBS, there is no standardization among PBS stations as to how they use subchannels. The SD feed that on a commercial station would be the ".1" For a PBS station the SD channel might be .2 or .3, or not carried digitally at all.Actually it would be safe to say that no assumptions should be made based on local observations. In my market the commercial stations all have their HD on .1 (not SD as suggested above) and the one commercial station that also transmits a SD simulcast has that on .2. One commercial station has a .2 with completely different programming and a .3 weather channel. Another has no HD at all and just puts out the .1 subchannel in SD. The PBS here simulcasts their NTSC SD channel on ATSC .2 and carries a national HD feed on .1 (no local content).

I don't have any stations in my market that dynamically change feeds during the day (although the PBS station said that they were going to do that "in the future" - dump the HD when not in prime time and put up to six SD feeds on the ATSC channel). That has to be confusing for a receiver unless the station always has the subchannel there but points the "off air" subchannels to a low bandwidth black screen so it isn't just a missing channel.

All channels on an ATSC feed are subchannels, even the .1 on an ATSC feed with only one set of audio/video. The numbering is an option - A station could put up their subchannels as .10 and .20 if they wished, or .9 and .67. (I have not seen or heard of a station actually doing that.) It is also possible to have different "virtual channels" on the ATSC feed. The ATSC standard is rubust.

In any case, there are too many market to market variations to assume that what one market is doing is what all markets are doing. Which is where purchased data comes in. E* does not have to assume what EPG goes with what OTA feed, they need to get the linking information from their vendor - and get it right.

The 921 problem is interesting and is the first sign of any real problem I've seen reported with the new OTA EPG data (other than mismatches). Perhaps that is the receiver that is having problems enough to get the 14000 and 15000 channels pulled.

Michael P
02-10-07, 01:36 PM
In my market the commercial stations all have their HD on .1 (not SD as suggested above) What I meant to say in my previous post insted of "The SD feed on a commercial station would be .1" was the SD feed that E* carries in their LIL's would have the same guide data as the OTA HD feed on .1.

Therefore the only OTA stations (HD or SD) that "work" (i.e. have the same correct data in both the EPG and browse banner/info screen) on my 921 are those station who: 1.) are caried in the E* LIL's and 2.) have that same shedule, albeit in HD or SD, on ATSC channel .1. All commercial stations I have observed had the same schedule on both analog/LIL and HD/ATSC .1.
The usual YMMV disclaimer applies.

The numbering is an option - A station could put up their subchannels as .10 and .20 if they wished, or .9 and .67. (I have not seen or heard of a station actually doing that.) Actually there is a set format for the numbering of subchannels. WVIZ-DT used to carry an audio-only service on .26 iirc. When they dropped that feed in favor of finally carrying a digital version of their main SD feed that new subchannel was named .3. Their .1 feed has alwayd been PBS HD. The guide data appeared breifly on WVIZ-DT 25.1, however the 921's browse banner had "WVIZ1" as the program name and "No info available" when hitting the info button. Hitting the same info button while inthe EPG would give program information.

The EPG correctly has information for the following commercial station subchannels form the Cleveland DMA: WKYC 3.2 "Weather Plus, Hometown weather" and WUAB 43.2 "The Tube Music Videos". The browse-banner for these two do not agree with the EPG. Additionally the non-commercial WVIZ 25.2 "The Ohio Channel" has correct data in the EPG only. NOTE: The 2 commercial stations have the same "program" 24 hours a day, while The Ohio Channel has differing programs that do appear in the WVIZ 25.2 EPG.

James Long
02-10-07, 01:45 PM
I would say that it is most common that the .1 subchannel matches the NTSC broadcast in program title ... which is probably why E* has made that assumptions in most cases. They do need to get the 14000's and 15000's back and stop the assuming!

Any set format for the numbering of subchannels is set by the station. It is most common to use the low numbers in order, but stations are free to use any valid subchannel numbering they want.

The issues you saw on your 921 are unique, as far as I can tell. I didn't see any such problems on my 622 for the brief time my OTA locals had EPG data.

Interestingly... I have the "bug" I've seen mentioned now on my ViP622 for Raleigh WRAL and WRAZ guide info.

Prior to yesterday, I had corresponding guide info for 5.1 and 50.1 in my EPG that matched the 5-00 and 50-00 from satellite. All was well because in my market this data is valid and correct.

But... yesterday I got my + dish upgrade so I can now see 118.7 and get the two locals in HD that are available here (11 and 17, ABC and NBC respectively)... Well, ever since the checkswitch and reboot and including a nightly update now... My 5.1 and 50.1 EPG data is intermittent. Other channels are working as before... but my 5.1 and 50.1 data is gone when I first turn on the receiver "Digital Channel" info only... then after a couple of hours being turned on, the 5.1 and 50.1 data appears.

Since the only thing changed about my system was installation of a DPP44 switch and new dish to see 118.7 (now seeing 110/119/129/118.7)... I have to assume the addition of that 4th orbital slot and all the new EPG data from the internationals there is causing this intermittent hiccup.

I have seen others complain about this recently and now I know what they are talking about. If I had to guess, I would bet there is a relation between this EPG problem and the other problems rumored regarding all that data Dish backed out of the system last week.
