View Full Version : Autotune vs. Autorecord

 I just received my new HR20, and found an instant problem that I am sure some others have encountered as well. When I want to watch a future program, my old non DVR HD box used to let me highlight the program and set an "autotune" so that the channel would automatically change over at the correct time.

Now when I do that, it will only allow me to "autorecord". Why is that? I would like to automatically tune onto that channel and watch it without recording it.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

It's a DVR, it records for future viewing. So simply hit the record button and you're all set. If you happen to be around and watch it live you can delete the recording when it's done.

Besides, a DVR is *always* recording to the buffer. So even when you tune into the news live, it's still recording the news to the buffer.

This very same question came up 6 years ago with the first DirecTV with Tivo receiver. Basically it's just getting used to what a DVR has to offer.

Thank you.

But I am most interested in seeing if the channel will automatically change over, or will I have to switch it myself.

You have to understand that the remote control has made me very lazy...and I am looking for a way to make me even more so !!

I know...I found that to be annoying as well, but as he just said, it's really the same thing b/c it always has a live buffer anyway. That basically means that autotune and autorecord are the same thing.

As for the quoted part above, by clicking Record in the guide, that WILL change the channel for you at the appropriate time.

Make sense?

OK, I need to amend my earlier post. When I wrote this, I only had 1 tuner hooked up, so it did tell me it was going to change the channel ahead of time. However, now that I have the 2nd line connected, it no longer tells me (because it can keep the current channel and still record the autorecord channel).

So the basic premise is the same that it's recording it anyway, but I do miss the autotune channel changing concept. Oh well. In the list of annoyances, this is certainly at the bottom.
