Anyone here have any kind of sync issues with their HR20 while hooked up composite? My picture will flicker when there is a lot of activity on the screen. S-video, HDMI are fine. Just wondering if this is common or if I got a bad box?

Do you mean Composite [The single yellow connector] or Component [RGB Connections]?

I've never even bothered with anything lower than Component so I have no idea if S-Video or Composite even work. :)

I do mean the composite connection. I use the HDMI for my HD set and the composite for a (SD)TV in another room.

More likely a TV problem. Some TV's don't like rapid video changes and can produce the "flicker" you're seeing. If SVideo is fine then that's a preferable connection anyway.

Nope, not the TV. I tried it on a couple of different TVs and got the same result everytime.

How long is that Composite cable?

After reading your other replies in this thread it sounds more like a bad cable issue.....

Have you simply tries another composite cable to any of the tv's your experiencing the problem with? If you don't have another cable that long, then simply use a shorter cable and move a tv closer to test this theory out with....

I feed a slingbox and a remote TV with the composite outputs and it works just fine. There is a slight audio delay difference between the main (HDMI) tv and the remote (composite) tv. Need to try going back to component rather than HDMI to see if that fixes that.

OK... Here's the deal... It's not the TV (tried 2 different sets). It's not the cabling. It's not the format. I took a small TV and plugged it into the composite connection with a 6' monster cable and I was still getting the same "flicking" or "flipping" going on. It is. without a doubt, the composite output on the box.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I called Directv about it and they are sending me a new box.

Not a problem reported here before. Nice troubleshooting job. Looks like you've narrowed it down. Let us know how the replacement unit behaves.

I have a similar problem with a long component. Is Svideo really better?

One thing to consider. TV's will delay differently from input to input depending on the processing going on inside. (And from one TV to another.) HD especially can be intensive so delays are likely.

Component or componsite? Svideo is normally better than composite, but not as breathtaking as the move to HD. (My how I've become spoiled) :)

Cheers,
Tom

Only component video and HDMI cables will provide HD transfer.

Svideo, although better composite or coaxial will not support/pass High Definition.
