View Full Version : Flawless 24 tonight

For the first time this season, I was able to watch tonight's 2-hour 24 with absolutely no audio or video dropouts. As with previous weeks, I watched it after it had finished recording (off my local OTA HD channel), fast-forwarding through commercials. Apart from the occasional appearance of Pinky, it was perfect.

I'd say progress is definitely being made.

So, in the past you couldn't even watch it if you waited until 24 was over? Well, if that was the case then I guess its progress, but it certainly don't work using FF while its recording. Which that's what I normally do so they still need to work that part out.

I'm only through the first hour, but... I've notice with all of this seasons shows that whether I'm on the LA feed or my local MPEG-4, there is a video "anomaly" about 10 min in. It doesn't last long, a few sec maybe, but the bottom half of the picture is garbage. I wonder since it comes on two channels if the network feed is intentionally "marked" [as in a water mark] to trace any copies that may show up somewhere?
Just a thought as every show [24] I see seems to have this.

PS: the second hour showed the same "glitch".

No, I always watch it after it's finished recording. Previous weeks had all been afflicted by audio and video dropouts, usually about half way through the show, and *maybe* associated with the use of FF to get through commercials, although I can't be sure of that. Last night's episodes, as I stated, played back with no problems at all.

Agreed. Here in the Houston area the was terrific (no pixilation or buzz-saw audio-drop out).

I'm happy for you. MINE was riddled with red and blue dots for the entire 2 hours and there was about a five second blue screen with total loss of audio during the scene where Jack stormed Fayed's hideout!

This DVR is a turd! Plain and simple.

Your local station is a turd, P & S. :)

Good, glad to hear FOX is stepping in the right direction.

I recorded it to watch with the wife tonight.
This will be the first episode this year without having to deal with the audio and pixelation issues.:D

Apparently, you don't read much.

The thread re: the floating red dots issue confirms that the problem ISN'T the local channels, it is DirecTV/this turd of a DVR! Plain and simple.

Excuse me... Since I:
1) had 24 come in well,
2) don't have red dots.
Plain & Simple, my two aren't turds.............

Mine works great, with no missed recordings and no red dots. I like it even better than my HR10. But then I'm a bit of a turd myself.;)

Just watched 24 recorded last night and it was perfect too. This was MPEG4 out of NY. I hope this is a indication the D* is fixing something in the data stream.

Agreed.
This is how I watch most programming, banking 20 minutes per hour for commercials.
24 was full of silent spots last night.
Very annoying.

I always record and watch later after the girls go to bed.
I record via Local OTA and last night was the closest to perfect.
Couple of pixelization spots about 1 hour 16 min in. I know because I definitely noticed how clean it was.
However despite confirmed HR20 problems in the past I can't prove whether my FOX break ups are the box or the local feed.

Not so with me - lots of dropouts both audio and video -OTA

I watched it tonight after recording it from MPEG4 local in Tampa and it was truly flawless as well ... Pinky appeared once to make me fondly remember when he (she?) used to appear on virtually every trick play .... I hav emissed a grand total of one recording in 6 weeks with my HR20-700 .... I like it (there I said it!)

Well, that's why I asked if you normally tried to watch while recording, since when I do that with a OTA 720P broadcast, using any trick play no doubt causes all kind of audio & video breakups.

All I have to do is go to the channel an watch the buffer live, it will stay clear until I start playing with any buttons. Then when I catch up where I first starting using trick play, all kinds of breakups start. It does it every time, very easy to tell and also a mess to deal with.

I cannot say for sure about 1080i but I know its nothing like 720P.

Make sense much?

Again, you apparently don't read! There is an entire multi-page thread re: the red dots if you would care to enlighten yourself! Or do you just intend to follow-up with another ignorant response?

I already responded to your PM, but I will say the same here .. just more briefly:

I don't post here because the HR20 is the greatest DVR ever devised by man. It has significant problems! mpeg4 still messed up, red dots across the entire screen in a number of markets (which D* has admitted is THEIR problem and NOT the affiliates!), programs not being recorded, recordings that are not viewable, .. need I go on?

Until/IF they get this thing to work properly, a number of us will stop by and post. Yes .. maybe even occasionally rant! It's a whole lot more productive (and less expensive) than throwing the remote through the TV screen! I can assure you that when the state of near perfection (as I expect of my other DVRs!) of the HR20 arrives, a number of us will find better things to do.

I can agree with you completely & enjoy your "temperament" as I don't see or find an insult personal or not within it. Thank you as this is more like the nature of the members here.
Rant, rave, or just try to help out others.... Works for me :)

24 was near-perfect for me this week. Unfortunately, Heroes, which was recording at the same time (both OTA) was full of pixelation and audio drop-outs. Weird.

24's PQ has been great for me every time it's on -- absolutely no problems
with the HD signal on both of my HDTVs.

24 is one show that I can always depend on to have audio dropouts, and this week was no exception.

As a bonus, both Law & Orders last night had horrible, horrible dropouts; constant, and sometimes 10 seconds at a time.

I was watching the first one as the second one recorded and it was virtually unwatchable. I did a RBR and it improved a whole lot. By the time I was half way through the second episode, another RBR was required, which, again, helped.

This was not OTA.

On a side note, unrelated to the HR20:

Is it just me or does "24" have an unusually low center channel volume? I've had to crank up the center channel to max every week so far this season just to be able to hear the dialog. Or is it just me?

Now don't .... but "mine works fine"...
I may raise the volume, but not had to work on just the center channel. :)

24? what's that? http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=830609&postcount=367

Mine just recorded a black screen, and when I had to reboot it to recover it was gone... anyone that says this thing is flawless is sadly mistaken...

I believe this HR20 is going down in the record books next to the Yugo. This thing is a pile. The core software is bad, and until they realize this and start over these band-aid fixes are not going to help. You just can't polish a turd...

I would be the last one to say the HR-20 is flawless. While I did record 24 from FOX 40.
If you're having big troubles with yours, why don't you do a reset everything & clean everything out? I'm not going to say that this will cure everything, but it should help to reduce your problems. FWIW
