Ok, What my best bet for removing ice from the dish, OTA doesn't work real well for me and freezing rain has interupted my service.

There are "dish heaters" you can buy. Some say using any outdoor lamp shining on the dish. How about a hair dryer?

I'm not sure till I see it if its just the whole dish covered with ice or just the LNB's.

california?, no way.

Maybe I should bang it with a broom stick?

I do this for snow, but I wouldn't for ice as I would need to bang it hard enough as to knock it out of alignment.

Um, I don't think that's the best way to deal with it. And California's not as bad as all that.

my dish is manging to hold out so far with all this ice. in the past, i've done a heat gun/hair dryer on the ice buildup on my dish. that's worked fairly well. watch yourself on the icy roof, though!

well, it would be a ladder, dish mounted high on side of house

Throw a couple snowballs at it.

went home for lunch, it was heavy wet snow from early this morning then freezing rain on top of that. I simply put a scrub brush on the end of an adjustable pole and pushed it all right off. Wife is :)

Super Soaker with warm water is your friend if it's up on the roof. :)

This is why I have my dish low enough for me to reach easy. I was going to mention water too. Doesn't have to be that hot to work if its around freezing. Just room temp or better should do it.

Seriously? Doesn't the residual water then re-freeze? I'd hate to addict my 5LNB to a Super Soaker - there are laws, you know!

If this really works, it's a great idea. If re-freeze is possible, I'll consider windshield wiper fluid with it...

Just call me a bluegill if I've swallowed a troll hook, line .....

[My "super soaker" can run out]. :)

I'm in SW OH too. I came home to the "searching for signal" message. Went out and there was a ton of ice/snow on the dish. Took a broom and carefully pushed off the snow and kind of banged on it a bit and the ice fell off. Message went away. I have a feeling I will have to do it again tomorrow. First time in 3 years I've ever had to remove snow from the dish.

There is a product called Ice Zapper. You can read all about it at their website by the same name.

My dish is on a poll in backyard next to the driveway. I just took a sport drink bottle filled with warm water and poured it on the dish and LNBs. Took a few refills and it melted all the ice. Water just runs off. What is left and might refreeze isn't enough to stop the signal. *Thick* ice is what causes signal loss. A thin layer doesn't.

I did have a friend with cable tease me when I told him about doing this that he didn't have to do that (he's bought into the Comcast ads that you lose signal with clouds if you have sat).
I then asked him how long he was out of cable when ice took the lines down. "Uhhh, about a week."
And how long were you on hold before you could report the outage? "20 minutes"
I then said in less then 10 minutes I had the ice off my dish and was up and running again, meanwhile he'd still be on hold and then told it would be a week before he had TV again.

He wasn't as happy that I shoved it back in his face and proved him wrong. :)

if its cold enough--- i would think refreeze would be an issue. super soaker was a good idea---why not fill that with de-icer liquid?

Maybe spraying some PAM (or other non-stick cooking spray) or some sort of de-ice product?

Not really. It was 5 below when I did this. There just isn't enough water to refreeze to cause an issue. Gravity kinda takes care of the water. ;)
