View Full Version : HDMI Connection gone dead

[Apologies for starting a new thread but I believe this is different enough from the content of the "swicth from HDMI" one to justify it]

I've just had my HR20 installed and last night I was watching a recorded program when all of a sudden the HDMI output goes dead. The system was still working so I did some searches here and the suggested remedy was to do a red button reset.

I did that and the HDMI output remained dead. If I switched to the S-Video output I could see the receiver trying to boot and it appeared to hang at Step 1 of 2. I left it like that all night, assuming that it was taking some time checking disk etc and then this morning I reset it again.

The system at least boots now but the HDMI output is still turned off (If I check the status on my TV it shows that it is getting no digital signal). However everything appears to work fine (except for that) when viewed through the S-Video connection.

I tested the TV using my DVD player and it gets the digital signal OK (indicating that the cable between my DVI switch and the TV is OK and swapping the DVI cables on the switch indicates that both switch channels work) but no matter what I do I can't seem to get a digital signal out from the HR20.

The only thing I haven't tried (due to location in my TV cabinet) is a direct connection from the HR20 to my TV.

Has anyone got any suggestions for me?

Thanks,

TonyG

If I follow - you have a DVI switch, with a DVI source on one side, HDMI to DVI from HR20 on the other, and DVI out to your TV?

I have that config with a DVI Link brand switch. Given that you've checked both sides of the switch, and from my experience, I want to encourage you that that config will work great, once this problem is fixed.

First, as your installation is new, I'd suggest that you pull your HR20 out, and look into the HDMI socket (magnifying glass and good light recommended) and ensure that you have no bent pins or anything on your HR20/HDMI port. (I did.)

After that ... do you have another DVI-HDMI cable to try out?

Given that both sides of your switch work, and once did with the HR20, I'd be surprised if TV-HR20 will tell you anything, so I'd skip that step myself.

hth, good luck and :welcome_s to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome.

You have the setup exactly right - HR20 connected via a HDMI to DVI cable to a DVI Link 2 port switch and then connected to a Hitachi 50V500A TV via a DVI to DVI cable on Input 1 (on the other port I have a Oppo OPDV971H DVD player connected by DVI to DVI cable).

I also have the HR20 connected via the S-Video cable to a Yamaha RX-V1200 and then to my TV again via S-Video cable to input 3. This was how I could see the system still working.

I'll check the pins when I get home - Thanks for the suggestion.

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update.

I pulled the box out tonight and checked the connectors like macEarl suggested and yes I indeed have a bent pin in the HDMI port on the HR20.

I tried repairing it but it didn't seem to make any difference so I'll be calling DirecTV shortly to see about getting a replacement unit.

In the meantime I'm off to the component output.

Thanks for the help macEarl - Probably would have gone insane trying to get it to work because checking for pins didn't occur to me.
