Hi all i just wrote D* to ask if i could get ST without a phone line hooked up. I have asked this question here and had mixed answers. Here is the emial i got from them:

Thanks for writing about your programming and equipment concern. We ask customers to connect a phone line to their DIRECTV System for billing as well as program ordering and viewing purposes. If you don’t have a continuous telephone connection you won’t be able to access local professional and other select sports programming such as the NFL Sunday Ticket.

Furthermore, the phone line sends us account information from your system's receiver box. This important link lets you order pay per view movies and events with your remote control, get access to your local Regional Sports Network (if it's included in your monthly package), and watch popular sports subscriptions like NFL SUNDAY TICKET and NBA LEAGUE PASS. This connection will not interfere with the use of your phone.

You won't be able to order pay per view with your remote control as well. Of course, you can always order pay per view online, pay a $1.50 service fee to order through our automated phone system or pay a $5.00 service fee to order through a representative. But as you can see, having a land-based phone line continuously connected to your DIRECTV Receiver allows you to take full advantage of your DIRECTV System.

Thanks again for writing and stay tuned to DIRECTV.com for the latest news and information about our services.

Sincerely,

Francis

My concern with this answer is that I do get my local sports even though i do not have a phone line hooked up. I live in an apartment and it would be a complete eyesore to hook up a phobne line to my box.

Some please help, i really want to watch my steelers but don't know if a can.

Order ST via the website. While the terms "require" you to maintain a phone line to each receiver for ST, in reality the receivers do not check--at least they haven't for quite a few years.

They want the phone hooked up to identify the location of the box. It is one way for them to keep buisness from using residential service in there bar, etc.

Phone line is required.

Technically however 98% chance you'll be just fine without one with ST and RSNs. I know of one person that had troubles twice in one season because his wife's cat kept pulling the phone cord out of the wall. He lost ST twice and had to call to have it reauthorized once he plugged in the phone line again. But that's the only case I know of personally.

I've had no phone line at times no troubles.

The thing people don't realize is the receivers only dial out once a month or so to "phone home" to the mothership. If you have trouble then after about a month simply drag a phone cord to the receiver and plug it in for the day. Do this every 5 weeks or so and you'll be just fine.

I've had NFL Sunday Ticket ever since it first came out and 2 of my 4 receivers never (and I mean NEVER, not even once) ever had a phone line connected. I even subscribed to NHL Center Ice for a few years and same thing.

If you have no phone line connected, all they do is cut off your ability to order ppv's with your remote control.

Trust us, your fellow end users, not the CSR's who tow the company line.
;)

Worst case senario ... EVEN IF someday they crack down and make the phone line mandatory to get the package ... all you would have to do is grab a 50' phone line and plug it in for just a few minutes once a month or so to conform with their rules.

Well one of my receivers has a phone line, but the other doesn't. When I called D about the lack of a phone line all the CSR said was I couldn't order pay per view by remote.
I've never had anything like the NFL Ticket, but I do have the Sports Pack. I didn't think to check to see if I could get those channels on my receiver without the phone line. That's something I will try :D
