Anybody know if the situation with the poor quality of NBC MPEG4 going to be corrected any time soon? I get severe macroblocking and motion artifacts any time I record Leno. Other NBC HD shows have the problems as well. Needless to say this is getting pretty old when the other HD locals look much better.

I'm guessing you're watching KCRA, who are updating [everything] to full time HD?

Based on what I see, and on what has been posted elsewhere, it's not an MPEG-4 issue. NBCs national feed is often a mess, and so many of these problems exist on OTA also. Converting from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 amplifies the problems so they look worse on MPEG-4 than on MPEG-2. NBC just does not seem to take HD as seriously as some of the other networks.

I'm sure every "link in the chain" can corrupt the PQ.

Whatever the reason my local NBC HD PQ is basically cr@p. If there's no motion it becomes somewhat watchable but I may be better off recording the SD feed instead until they get things straightened out as it's very annoying.

I have severe macroblocking with D* NBC. But watching it on OTA HD is OK for now. Not the best but its not macroblocking.

I wish I could have the option of OTA but being in a valley with absolutely no OTA signals it's either satellite or cable for me. :(

This may be a west coast thing because my NBC is fine here. Maybe a spot beam thing?

Same her eon Memphis affiliate. I just posted a thread on the HR-20 forum about it actually.

It's ghosty and snowy, everything. Terrible compared to other locals.

Watching NBC primetime and late night in STL the PQ is fine, their HD feed for Sunday afternoon hockey is less than impressive IMO though.

In reading the AVS forums, it seems NBC and some NBC affiliates are required to carry two sub channels, thus taking bandwidth away from the MPEG 4 feed

Comparing my local NBC OTA vs. MPEG4, there are definitely additional A/V issues that show up as a result of the MPEG4 encoding. Also seen on CBS...but not on either of the 720p networks. Has definitely gotten better, but there are still improvements needed to the MPEG4 encoding process in our local market.

I'm seeing the same thing on KNSD 39, NBC local-sat in San Diego.

terrible here also in MPEG-4, no OTA to compare.
