It down converts HDTV signals to analog to put on tape. Really great if you have lots of money to waste. Its not a digital format, but it does record HDTV. :shrug: Since JVC has come out with D-VHS, I can't imagine there being much support for this. Its not a consumer product (or shoudn't be one). I believe it was their professional line of recording products.

WoW! Thats a beautiful looking unit but at a list price of five an a half grand, I dont think so! Not even ay 3K, which what it is for buy it now, which is most likely what the reserve is. What the difference between DVHS and WVHS?

DVHS = Digital
WVHS = Analog

Hey, but it plays VHS tapes! :rolleyes:

For those who have a 6000 and want to record HDTV, i guess this is the ticket!

I don't know, how can HDTV be any good in analog? And with D-VHS around the corner for much less.... :shrug:

Just about everything you've seen in HDTV is displayed through analog inputs on the set.

WVHS = Wideband VHS. It is an analog HDTV format. I have seen several of these units at many tradeshows in the past and picture is excellent (no digital artifacts at all since it is not digital). Usually I have seen them used as the source hardware for high buck front projection systems. The problem of course is source material. There really is none unless you want to record your own. I have no idea what kind of inputs are on the back for recording, so don't know about compatibility with any HDTV receivers. When HDTV broadcast was originally proposed it was going to be an analog format and this recorder was going to be compatible with that format. Things do change.

And this WVHS is a professional product. I can't imagine anyone paying $3000 for a recorder when DVHS is at least half and PVRs are around the corner... :shrug:

It appears that Wvhs has one advantage, I don't think it has any copy protections.

Thats quite a cost for that freedom.

Well lets put it this way. It takes component input for recording HDTV so that means it works with virtually any STB out to date.

Yeah, DVHS is great. Now go find a satellite STB with firewire output to feed a DVHS unit. There are none (aside from a guy that sells a modified DTC-100 with firewire output).

The 2 "true" downsides to the unit are no 5.1 capability.. DPL only, and the fact that blank tapes cost so much.

Since I have 3 HD STB's with component output I could even live with those 2 shortcomings for simple timeshifting. But still, not quite at that pricepoint.

Right, but as you said, not at that pricepoint. This isn't a consumer solution.

Yeah, I'd go maybe 1000.00 for it. Because while one can say...well just wait for the new HD PVR's (even with firewire out to boot for dumping to tape) instead, that still doesnt account for already having invested in the 3 other HD STB's.. not to mention the fact that they're for 3 different providers. One new HD PVR would only solve the recording/timeshifting from one service.

Oh well, the good news is I've never been a big taper/timeshifter anyway even back to the old VCR days. So I dont lose any sleep over it.

Sorry, if you have a 6000 you can't record HD. It's my understanding that it will only record HD via the DVI input. Am I wrong? I hope so.

If you have a 6000 you can record with WVHS.

See new listing below.

It works great.

Only way to record all HD, including Discovery HD on 6000 or HDNET on DirecTV.
