I am eventually gonna leap into the HD market soon and have a question about the installation. I have a friend that installs TV and stereo equipment. If I buy the HR20 from Best Buy and have him install it what kind of credit can i get from D*. He obviously wouldn't charge me for the install(except for a few beers). Will i neeed hime to make up a faux invoice for D to credit me for the install? Will i get anything for the buying the dish at BB?

No guarantee that you will get anything at all. It appears that D* is finally beginning to dry up the freebie pool, possibly because they are once again in a situation where demand exceeds supply in several areas of the country. That being said I would think that you should be able to be credited for the cost of the dish as well as possible as much as 200 dollars off of the DVR. I think that people are still having a relatively easy time getting the DVR for 199 or even 99 dollars. I would call first before you spend the cash. Another option is to negotiate your deal and let D* install it, I think in all cases the dish and install is free you are just negotiating on the cost of the DVR. Than you and your buddy can just chill out and watch the instqaller while drinking a few beers.:hurah:

Keep in mind you'll need a new dish to get all the HD channels D* has now (and will be adding soon). And the new dish will require a new alignment and new mount. You may also need a new multiswitch depending on how many rooms you have. Do you know if BB carries the 5lnb dish and multiswitch? Do you know if your buddy knows how to line up a dish or even mount it on your roof? One call to D* will take care of all these details. Your choice.

Yeah he installs and does work orders for multimillionaires here in new jersey.; When he bought his house he wired the whole thing(including th bathroom) for satalite. he like doing things like this. i heard that if you pay for a private installer then D* will credit you the cost.Is this true? I have a very easy install only one TV. The only problem will be that I live in an apartment so it will be a 2" post in a cemented flowerpot.

I've heard of free installation, but not credit for private installation. Hopefully someone else know about this. It would surprise me, unless D* has some kind of agreement with the installer.

I wasn't aware that BB actually sold the 5 LNB dishes - but I could be wrong there.
If you can 'purchase' (the HR20 would still be leased) the HR20 and dish and have your friend install it, you could negotiate with D* about some possible credits for the dish and DVR, but if your friend is doing the install for free, why do you want to try to get money out of D* for the installation, too? Can't you just be happy to get credits for the equipment?
I know I may be in the minority on this, but I don't always agree with the idea of trying to more money out of them 'just because you can' or 'just to screw the man'. Why go after money for an install that cost you nothing?

There is no credit. I recommend you contact a local dealer (http://www.dbsinstall.com/Search/installersearch2.asp)and have them do the FREE install. You can do all the prep work, but when that units fails, you are faaar better off having a local technician you can call for help. If you deal with a box store, you are 100% at the mercy of dealing with DTV.
I have a customer who we installed about 4 months ago. Last night he called and said he was having trouble. I am going there today. When he called DTV, they told him it would take 3 weeks to get a tech out.
Not all local dealers are good. In fact I would say about 25% are pure crap. Take some time to find a good person who is a dealer. They will take of you.
To close, I had another DTV customer call who did not deal with me, and he is paying a $95 service call to me because he does not want to wait 14 days for DTV to do a free service call.
yeah, let your pal, who does multimilloinaires homes install it in a flowerpot! :hurah: :hurah: :hurah: Then have your pal Huey, or Louie, or Dewey, peak it. Then call D* and try and get $$ out of them. Nothing fraudulent about that. Hey, afterwards, you can take your pal who does multimillionaires homes out to Mickey Dees with the money you saved!

Ok first off i'm sorry if i was being unethical. Second just because he works for a company that does this kind of work doesn't mean that he makes a lot of money. He is just very good at what he does and works for a Video equipment company that services these types of clients.
I agree with all of you and am sorry I even brought it up. No reason to Flame me or my friend.
