View Full Version : well here we go...

today was the day.

scheduled 1-5 pm.

dude got here about 3:30. after a bit he figured out it was going to be tricky and called his supervisor for some advice on how to do it. the sup said it was a "custom install" so i got on the phone with D*, and the installer bailed to go do another "quick job" right at about 5:30. Well I have the HR20 here now but nothing is wired and no new dish.

Installer is supposedly coming back. It's now 7:30. I'm not exactly holding my breath but this is a major PAIN ... I mean, it's 2.5 hours after the window and he hasn't even started yet.

DirecTV did agree to pay the extra for the "custom install" (their term for "pull a cable through conduit with a rope").

I'm not impressed yet.

In youe other thread. You mentioned other people have said you need the exitsing cable replaced. Why?

I can't imagine why any installer would have a problem w/ a pull string in place.
What am I missing here. btw, If they use that pull string try to make sure the pull a replacement at the same time.

they wouldn't pull the string without charging me $105 extra to do it. I suggested they find some other way to do a "standard" install and they said there was no other way.

Dude never came back, promised to call me with a time to come back tomorrow, has not called me back. So I guess I'm bumped to the 30th. That _really_ ticks me off.

Not to sound crass, but why didn't you just pull the string yourself?

Might save you the headache of the "custom install" they are trying to charge you for??

well I offered to pull the thing myself. They wouldn't let me. It was kind of a mess. It's kind of dumb. We sat around while I tried to get DirecTV to understand the issue on the phone for about an hour, when we could have pulled the wire in about 5 minutes and been done with it.

Wouldn't let you? You can do whatever you want, it's your house. Pull all your cables (if you're physically able) and just have them put up the dish and switch when they come back. That's all they did for me, replaced the dish while I replaced the switch and ran a couple extra cables (with the installer made for me). Done deal.

If you already have all your cables run then all they need to do is simply hook it all up. Very easy job for them.

Back to one of my questions from his other thread. Won't his total run be well over 100 feet. Will that be a problem?

I agree w/ bonscott. You should pull it yourself. It doesn't sound like this guys heart is in it. Doing it yourself will probably result in a better job at this point and less headache.

well, $105 is cheaper than the cost of the cable to pull it myself.

Exactly how far is this cable through conduit pull going to be? I can get a heck-o-alotta coax for $105.

Just wondering...

well the plan was to run one length of coax from the dish (about 75 ft) through the conduit (about 50 ft) into the house, that's 600 ft give or take. I could just pull the 200' or so through the house if I had a local source for copper-clad.

DirecTV agreed to pay for the extra charge. Now if I could just get the installer to confirm when they are going to be here. Really irritating. I talked to the guy at 7:45 last night and he said he was calling his supervisor to get his schedule for today and would call me right back with a time. So far, no call.

We'll see how it goes.

ok, well this AM, I noted they had rescheduled me fo 3/30 so I called DirecTV. They turned on the HR20 for me hooked to the existing dish, and have changed my appt. date to get the dish installed for Monday 2/26. I'll just be glad to be able to watch tv over the weekend. getting a software download now, so I can use the OTA.

The HR20 shouold work w/ the 2-LNB, but like you mentioned you would be limited on which sats you would see and programming.

You can buy RG6 cable at Lowes or Home Depot.

the RG6 at lowes and home depot is copper-clad steel. IIRC that won't work along with my very long cable run.

I don't think I've read the other thread, but I'm sure having a problem understanding how long your runs are from this post.

Are the 75 feet and 50 feet added together for 125 feet total run? Then times 4 would be about 500 total feet of coax. In that case, your run length is 125 feet and that is not too long a run that you should have problems, but might be pushing the "free install" limit. Not sure where either the 200 or 600 foot figures come in though.

Carl,

In this thread post #4. If oyu go by his numbers it looks like it could be fron 125-200 if I'm radin that right.

yeah I haven't measured the cables (mostly because #1 it's questionable how long the run is inside the conduit, and #2 I don't have a >32ft tape measure) but I suspect it's 125-150 ft for the whole distance from the dish to the panel inside the house, where it then must connect thru a multiswitch to another 50ft of copper-clad steel cable. So my total cable run is going to be about 175-200ft and I need four cables that are 125-150 ft each running from the dish to the panel, up to 600 ft. So I'd have to buy a 1000 ft spool, that's >$100.

Nevertheless DirecTV has agreed to credit me for this extra cost of the "custom install" but the dude took off while I was on the phone with DirecTV. They'll be back Monday.

FWIW it's working fine now (but only SD channels) with the 2LNB dish and 200ish ft. of copper clad steel cable.

You got a power booster in your installation? If you have other receivers then the HR20 connected you might start seeing 771 errors as there isn't enough power to run the LNB properly. Search for the power your dish thread for options.

yeah i figured i'd have to put in a mid-line power supply, locker etc.
