View Full Version : HR20 Subs: Do you own a Mac or PC? (Take 2)

This not a Mac vs PC poll. What I want to know, as HR20 subs only, do you own a Mac or a PC and do you want to stream Mac media to the HR20. I think as HR20 subs, we are are a larger group than the general population as a whole. Once we get a good idea of where we are as a percentage of the HR20 population via DBSTalk, perhaps Earl can give this information to his D* contacts.

The last poll was open for only a week and showed almost 36% of the 182 responders owned a Mac, and almost 18% owned both. That is well over 50% of 182 responders who have a Mac in their home.

Apple Insider: Mac Market Share to drop to 2.3% (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2491)

So you are left with one of two realities.

1. Apple sold 100 million Macs over the weekend.

- or -

2. The people who read magazines or threads about Macs are likely to own one. 93 of them.

I am trying to gage the percent of Mac owners in the the HR20 lease population. I had an option for both in the first poll but I want to know what is the computer you use at home. I realize many people have both because they need one for work related stuff.

Yes I know. you made a similar post in the last poll

So far, this sampling shows that for the quarter million HR20 users:

100% of HR20 owners have at least 1 computer....

Here are some things I can tell you:

1) They are not specifically "excluding" MACs as there are people on the HR20 development that also own MACs

2) Their are a lot of "headaches" (for lack of a better word)... because of licensing/royalties and a bunch of "non-technical" factors

3) Content protection and "codecs" are a major concern for them...

FYI: The recent ruling against Microsoft for MP3s... Has caught their eye... so now they are going back to make sure everything is "okay"...

Not really nitpicking.. MAC is a computer term used by PCs and Macs, really anything that is networkable (is that a word? :) ) Stands for Media Access Control which is the unique identifier for most network adapters.

I've seen people get confused by that more than once.

As for me: 3 Macs, 2 PC, and parallels on my intel based Macs. since parallels came around (especially coherence!!), the PCs sit unused.

In no way am I comparing Macs to PCs. Both are in my house.

Mac has a 2.3% marketshare.

A quarter million HR20 users is a sufficient sample to represent the whole.

3. The percentage of D* subs owning Macs does not map linearly to the percentage of the general population owning Macs.

Drive down the streets in my town. D* is not the norm, nor is it evenly distributed.

Yep the MBP is indeed a Core 2 Duo MBP, running Boot Camp and XP. The iMacs are the older PPC models all running OS 10.4 anxiously awaiting Leopard. Slightly off topic here but Earl do you know if the soon to be released Apple TV box would somehow be compatible with the HR20?? Thanks.

I realize it would be great if [and when] D* sorted out the inclusion of Mac users in their plans. I intend to maintain my involvement with the CE group [for example] wherever it leads.

Meanwhile, I intend to upgrade to 80211.n, anyway, mostly to extend the range of my wireless network. And, most likely, I'll experiment with the Apple TV box when it ships in a couple weeks. If no one else reports back on their results with that permutation -- then, I will.

I'm a geek, user -- and a couple other niches in my job description that have to do with technology -- but, product reviews aren't my forte or essential interest.

I have to say that -- after 24 years online/computing -- generally a firm doesn't program for a useful platform because they don't think it necessary. The other excuses are excuses. For example, The folks who founded Napster and Skype are now developing Joost for streaming TV. When they began beta testing, several weeks ago, they didn't include OS X or Linux as available platforms.

Responding to beta test volunteers -- they decided to add OS X and did so -- within 4 weeks. And they're moving forward with Linux. [Oh -- and if coffee break photos I've seen are legit -- the sum total of programming staff is about 6-10!].

Let's face it, we wouldn't be saddled with HDMI [and the required HDCP] if it weren't for lawyers running the show instead of systems designers.

One Mac Mini (PPC) on my desk (which I plan to upgrade to an Intel Mac) and two Linux PCs in the garage for ham radio use. Both the Mini and one of the Linux boxes have OTA HD tuners and I can dump 480i A/V onto the Mini. One of the Linux boxes will dual-boot 98SE if needed and the Mini has VirtualPC with XP (and is it ever slow!)

I'd like to see HR20 networking become compatible with either iTunes or VLC (a multiplatform video app with both client and some server capabilities). I'm not really impressed with Twonky.

Twonky is a no go. Our best bet is Elgato's EyeConnect, a UPnP compliant server (www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyeconnect). It has the plug-ins but for some reason when you try to play music all you get is white noise. If the HR20 becomes UPnP compliant then we will be good to go. This post by the media bridge team seems to imply that the HR20 is a UPnP device:http://forums.directv.com/pe/action/forums/displaypost?postID=10228819. It can't be, otherwise EyeConnect would be streaming music instead of white noise.
