What would you do?

My XBOX360 just decided to take a dive.
The lovely 3 red lights, with the result code of 0102 (unknown error).

And of course, since I got it on release day... out of warranty.

$135 and change to repair it...
Or should I go with a new CORE unit at $300..
Which would also give me a 1 year warranty (not sure if I get 1 year post repair).

Extra Power Supply, TV connection, and a corded controler...

An no... going PS3 is not an option... and pretty much now my plans for a Wii are put on hold. :( as the XBOX360 is also my DVD and HD-DVD player as well.

Microsoft released an official statement that any Xbox 360 purchased before Jan.
1, 2006 (The Early Adopters), that they would repair the unit for free or send a replacement unit. My Xbox 360 did the same thing about 2 months ago, and they sent me a replacement unit for free. I Purchased mine in Nov 2005. I hope this message helps. To find the statement just Google "Xbox 360 repair Micosoft".:)
See if this works before purchasing another unit.

I would replace it. Then I would sell the bad unit on ebay. Someone out there would buy it to fix it or sell off the parts. Even if you just get $50, it's better than nothing.

Yep... found that one earlier... Sadly.
In a nutshell:

Green Light on power supply -> 3 Red Lights on the XBOX360 = Repair.

That's good. It's not like Msft can't afford it and they don't want to risk gamers going to another platform exclusively over this issue.

I know Msft has a bad reputation, but a couple of years back I bought a Msft wireless keyboard/mouse set from Newegg and the left click on the mouse was non-functional. I called the toll-free # to Msft. to troubleshoot, but they couldn't resolve it. But, they did send me a ~$80MSRP wireless mouse/keyboard set to replace the $40MSRP set I ordered from Newegg free of any charges.

Sadly... just got a reply... from email support (referring to that story).
They still denied to repair it for free.

So one more phone call..... and I will see if I can get them to repair it, since it was prior to January 2006 build.

If not... I'll probably end up with a new core unit.. :(
Really sucks, since there are rumors that a new model may be available in May

Earl, have you tried the "Towel" trick that can temporarily fix your 360? Might get you by until the possible new model (with HDMI I hope!) in May.

I've been a long time lurker, but just registered to tell you about this, so I can't post urls. Do a google search and you'll find the info, or PM me and I can send you the link.

After trying the magical " towel trick", as a bonus, you can wrap the magic towel
around your head and play swami until the static electricity dissipates.

I don't understand how MSFT can put out a statment they will comp repairs for pre 01/06 units and then not honor it. Call one your local station's consumer units and see if they can't get something done. If there is one this MSFT does not like is bad press, and bad press from a Chicago station even worse.

Microsoft lengthens Xbox 360 warranty
Microsoft extends the warranty coverage on its Xbox 360 console.

By Ben Silverman

No longer content adhering to the adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," Microsoft on Thursday announced that it will extend its Xbox 360 warranty coverage to three years from date of purchase. The warranty covers any consumer who experiences the general system failure indicated by three flashing red lights, more commonly referred to as the "red ring of death." Both shipping and repair costs will be covered.

The new warranty will represent a $1 billion pre-tax charge on Microsoft's earnings for the year's final quarter. This marks a notable setback for the company's Entertainment & Devices division, who reported a $315 million operating loss in the third quarter.

Call up 10 more times and see if different CSR's will help you out. If that doesn't work call up retention.

:P

Not knowing what the problem really is, can you take it apart and possible just replace some cap's and make it work?

My launch day 360 died after about 6.5 months at a time that the warrantee was 6 months. I paid half price for the repair at the time, then they bumped the warrantee to 1 year. I had my check in about a month after the announcement IIRC.

I researched it... and ultimately decided just to have Microsoft Fix it.
I paid $130, they sent the box with packing instructions and return shipping...

Had it back about a week later, good as new.

Now I am just waiting for my check.... for my refund, do to the extension of the warranty.
