I am a new HR20 owner. I am having a very hard time figuring out the fast forward function. I have been a long-time TiVo owner/user and the FF jumpback feature had become instinct. With the HR20 I feel like I have to anticipate when the commericals will end. However, I have not seen many posts complaining about this so was curious to know what others have done to get used to this. I assume most of the people on this site have owned a TiVo unit prior to the HR20.

I just go to the "2" FF point and can stop it in time. If I overshoot, the 6 second replay button works fine.

To come out of the FF mode, try using the repeat/replay button instead of using play. If you find you're a little slow on the trigger, hitting the repeat button two or three times will become habit forming for you.

The autocorrection is a TiVo patent, so we can complain about it (and we have) until we're blue in the face, but it won't do any good unfortunately.

You have a few choices:

- Use FF2 and then you should only need a couple replays, but it's too slow for me
- Use FF3 since it's faster, but you'll probably have to use maybe 4-10 replays when coming out of FF.
- Use the 30 sec skip, but there are several problems (at least to me): not all commercials are 30 secs, the units doesn't do exactly 30 secs when you queue up more than 1, and not all commercial breaks are the same length.

Pick the lesser of evils.

That explains it!! I didn't know that TiVo had the patent on that. I will try the suggestion from DJConan (even though he shows poor judgement as a Ravens fan) as I have tried everything else.

Actually, I was thinking of the 30-second slip when I suggested trying 2-3 replay clicks. FF4 will likely take a few extra replays because of how fast it moves along.

And as for the Ravens...hey, I have the same feelings towards the Colts. lol

Amazing. I didn't know TiVo had a patent on this. I've been overshooting the start of programs after commercials as well.

Brings up an interesting issue, though: Just how good will the HR20 ever be if it has to avoid the TiVo patent minefield? If D* has to offer lesser functionality merely to avoid patent infringement, well, perhaps the HR20 will always be a DVR wannabe.

Yeah, there's a lot of Tivo patents out there. I personally don't understand how you can patent something like hitting play and it goes back a few seconds. Or TiVo Suggestions, which just records similar programs.

I wonder why they couldn't/didn't get a patent on the season pass function.

I guess we're lucky they didn't patent the digital video recording service as we know it today or we would all be here complaining that our HR20s are just digital VCRs. :)

I have found the 30 second slip to be good I usually click it 5 times and then maybe 1 more if it over shoots just by the 1 click I notice hitting the replay button it always goes back to the end of the commercial. If you over shoot by 2 clicks on the 30 second slip then it may take several clicks f the replay button. This is what I have found out in my short career with the box.

With MPEG2 HD and SD, FFing is pretty smooth and it's much easier to tell where you are and there is no annoying pauses or jump fowards. And with FF3, I usually only need 2-3 replay presses when coming out of FF. Compare that to my SD Directivo, and I don't think it's that big of a difference really.

BUT, MPEG4 HD (which probably accounts for 60-70% of my viewing) is a different story. Like I alluded to, FF3 with MPEG4 HD is not great. It jumps around, it drops too many frames, there are annnoying delays when starting FF and when coming out of it. So if they can fix the trickplay during MPEG4 HD, which they have improved it, so I'm optimistic they can, then I don't think not having the autocorrection will be that big of a deal.

I miss the jump back too, but I have started using the 30 sec. skip. I don't see why D* doesn't license this from TiVo for the HR20.

My old TWC DVR did the jumpback on play trick. I don't know if they paid TiVo, knowing the cable companies I doubt it, or if they are just infringing on this "patent". This is one I would like to see be challenged, talk about obvious.

Sing it Brother!! DJ has some great posts, but a Ravens fan??:nono2: FWIW I use the FFx2 and usually jump back 1 or 2 times. Like it was said earlier, it just becomes habit.

Actually somewhere on a previous thread, it was discussed tha TWC was violating the Tivo patent and that Tivo was actually in the process of legal action against them for it. At least I seem to recall something written along those lines.

On non half hour commercial breaks, I usually hit the 30 second slip button 4 times which gets me pretty close...on the half hour commercial breaks, I hit it 6 times on average.

Any over shoot is taken care of by the 6 second jump back.

I thought I'd never get used to not having the autocorrect on FF (TiVo), but I'm really getting good with the 30 second slip. I still get the stinkface from the wife when I screw it up though. :D

Same here. At least with the shows that we watch every week, you start to learn the patterns & how many 30 second jumps you need to use. Some shows are horrible with their commercials - American Idol routinely has 4 or 5 minute commercial blocks on their 2 hour 'specials'...

I don't use FF much because of the aformentioned problems with MPEG4 content. It'll look like you're approaching the end of the commercials, but when the playback starts you're actually two minutes into the show.
