Just had a new 5 LNB slimline dish installed and got a HR20 to replace the 10-250. For some reason the installer had to use the component cables instead of the HDMI cable to connect to my TV. There was a language barrier but he said HDMI wouldn't work, however thats how I had the 10-250 connected.
Any major difference in sound or picture quality with the componenets?

My other HR20 is connected via HDMI with no problems.

I think I can say "most of us can't tell" any.
Your installer may be a bit behind the times. I believe most [all] of the HDMI issues have been resolved with the software updates.

This is very interesting but I will have to wait until Sunday to find out if there's an issue with 5 LNB. I had the installer come Tuesday of this week to setup the HR20 HD install but he said the 5 LNB dish on his truck had a broken LNB and would come back on Sunday with another 5 LNB dish.

I prefer to use the HDMI connection because it's less clutter versus component with regard to amount of cables used, aside from the issue of picture quality.

When I 1st hooked mine up, it didn't work with the HDMI cables. I then switched to component and everything was fine. Once it booted, loaded, and did all its stuff, I switched back to HDMI and haven't had a problem since.

When they first came out to install my HR20 and I told the installer I was using HDMI he said it didn't work. I told him that HDMI was the only option (I have a projector) and if he couldn't support HDMI then take it back. He called the office, they then went ahead and installed with HDMI. I don't use the HDMI for audio.

I get pixellation/blocking occasionally which I attribute to poor source (over compression?) from DTV. It occurs on almost all channels at times, even the HD ones.

You have only used HDMI, right? So you don't know if your problem is HDMI related or not, right?
Anyway, I was wondering how long your "glitches" were.
Just a thought: Do you think it could be an airplane blocking your signal momentarily?

Glitches vary from 1/2 second to 2-3 seconds. My sight line to the satellite is not in an airport flight path so no, it's not aircraft related.

If the problem were HDMI related I assume it would occur much more oftean and be more consistent.

I get color block streaking, blocking, jerky movement (entire frames being dropped), and even occasional super weird effects, IE Monk walks across the room while he's still stand still.

Your installer needs to go back to school in my opinion or maybe better than that D* needs to stop hiring technicians that can\\\'t speak English! Cheap labor is not always better labor...............

2-3 seconds would need to be a big & slow moving plane [not likely]. Any birds near by?
HDMI shouldn't be the problem [like you said].
While I've seen a bunch of crap, usually it is on local HD & it's "on their end". SD has had some problems, but only minor & with what I know, feel that it comes from the "supply chain" as it doesn't last any longer than enough to notice.
What I read from your posts, is you're losing "bits" in your data stream, just why I can't tell yet [and why such dumb questions like any birds?].

The HDMI cables will not work if your resolution is set to 480i. Also, during initial install they may have to use something other than HDMI but after the install you should be able to use HDMI.

I think you meant was until the software update, it might not work with HDMI.
I've connected a brand new HR-20 with HDMI to my TV right out of the box & it has worked on any resolution....YMMV

I assure you, there are still quite a few HDMI issues left in the HR20 and H20 that make it across my desk every day.

Not as many as there used to be though, so there has been some progress...

OK, I haven't had any & there don't seem to be many posted here. FWIW [glad I don't have your desk. :) ].

No, my Sony works just fine using HDMI and 480i.

You hit the nail on the head. The installer was most likely doing a forced download and if the TV does not go to a 480 automatically or is not capable of the low resolution via the HDMI, he would prefer a component connection so he could see the download at the 480 resolution. Not all HDMI connections support 480.

I think he tried to get it booted up and downloaded but it would not load or recognize the satellite through HDMI so he hooked up the components. I'm assuming now that its loaded I can hook it up to HDMI.

Yes.
