Yesterday I sent my opinion to Charlie about E* signing up for EI. Not thinking I would get a response:

Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2007 8:01 AM

Subject: tell MLB to go to h*ll

MY advice Charlie "tell MLB and Direct tv to go to h*ll on MLB EI and spend the money instead on adding MASN and YES `network, for their fans.

the response I got:

Hello,

Thank you for your recent e-mail. Dish Network continues to negotiate with MASN, but we don’t have a definitive agreement yet. If we are successful in reaching an agreement it will most likely be closer to the start of MLB season. However, there are no plans at this time to add YES.

Thanks

Wow, thanks for pushing Dish on this! You have gotten much further than I have in the last two+plus years - all I ever get are form letter replies to my almost weekly queries. Perhaps you can post your secret for getting through. For the rest of the Dish subscribers in the Mid-Atlantic states hoping to see the Nationals or Orioles this year, please contact Dish Network and let them know how you feel. I have been a subscriber for 10 years, and I thought that the move of the Orioles to MASN would finally crack Dish (the only "cable" provider in the region not carrying MASN). DirecTV has had MASN since the beginning, and this year all the terrestrial carriers followed suit, leaving only Dish subscribers blacked out. It is extraordinarily frustrating. If this is not resolved this year, I am leaving Dish. I have gone from being a Dish "evangelist" to telling anyone in the DC or Baltimore area to look elsewhere if you consider sports an important part of your TV experience. It is sad that they have turned one of their most loyal fans into someone shopping for an alternative. I hope Dish Network comes to their senses on this issue. Thanks for fighting the good fight with them!

E* has an uplinked channel called test9 (i believe) on channel 421. It has been reported that the gudie info matches the programming on MASN. This channel is currently not available to any subscribers (yet ;) )

Unfortunately the problem is neither MASN or "MASN2" (alternate) is carried. Dish has not worked out a deal yet to carry the Orioles / Nats. :(

And then on opening day, the Orioles game was to be carried on ESPN2, but was blacked out, thanks to MASN. Over at Camden Chat (http://www.camdenchat.com/story/2007/4/3/43611/14021) most people who actually did watch it on MASN were not thrilled with the quality of the broadcast.

And rightly so MASN should enforce the blackout rules. Just because 1 satellite provider fails to come to terms with them for carriage rights doesn't mean they should allow to shown on ESPN in their local coverage area. That would mean less viewers for their advertisers on their MASN broadcast.

According Tim Lemke of the Washington Times in this article (http://video1.washingtontimes.com/natsmailbag/2007/03/live_chat_with_thom_loverro_1.html), DISH has been offered same carriage rights as everyone else, so if you have a problem with MASN enforcing the blackout rules, than blame DISH, not MASN. If DISH picks up MASN, than all would be well in DISHland....

From Washington Post article, March 29, 2007 -

A: I'll defer to sports biz reporter Tim Lemke, who happens to be standing next to me. But I'll be back.

Tim: MASN has been negotiation with Dish over the last year jsut as they negotiated with every satelite and cable provider. I am not quite sure why a deal with Dish Network has not been struck, but they have been offered the chance to carry MASN at the same carraige rates as everyone else. At this point, Dish Network simply hasn't met MASN's terms. I can tell you that Dish Network has been more reluctant than other cable providers to sign on with some of these sports networks. They seem to be not as interested in sports content as DirecTV, for instance. My suggestion, if you really are a big sports fan, would be to switch providers, if possible.

What package do you have? I have AT100 and those channels aren't there. Sounds like at200 and above might get the channels.

I have DVR Advantage (AT 200). It looks like you have to have AT 100+ (http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/whats_on_dish/programming_packages/channels/index.asp?NetwID=52197).

Just called and upgraded for 5 bucks more to the 100+ package. I did it for CSN more than for the MASN channels.

And cheers resounded in our house when I was looking through the guide just now and saw MASN and MASN2 on.

I jumped to soon. 100+ only gets me CSN and not MASN1 or MASN2. Tech support told me that my zip code doesn't qualify for those channels. I went back to AT100. The bad thing is, I only live 30 miles from D.C.

The next step would be to add the sports pack ... $5.99 more than AT100+ (or $30.98 - w/locals $35.98).
Of course, blackouts apply.

And depending on your zip code you may or may not get games on the other channels

Living in SE Ohio i am able to get all the games off FOX Sports CN, OH, Sports Time OH and Fox Sports Pittsburg... I had to upgrade to the $5.99 package to get FOX Sports Pittsburg.

Which is the meaning of "blackouts apply". :)

Personally, I believe people should get all the RSNs that carry any professional sport that they are eligible to receive in their zip code. For example, I'm in the home market for the Detroit Tigers and can watch games on FOX Detroit - but it is not part of my basic package. What happens if a game is on FOXD and another network and FOXD has the rights? It is blacked out on the other network ... and E* doesn't put the game on an ALT channel where I can see it. :(

The next step is to just include the Sports Package channels in the basic package, but that would cost money. E* charges $5.99 for the standalone and I doubt that they could charge much less if "everybody" got every sports channel. (D* charges $12 for the sports package - but it includes channels that E* puts in the AT level packages.)
