I just had DirecTV installed last week and I have an R-15. So far so good except I notice a color depth issue compared to cable. It shows up the most on dark scenes. For example, I was watching Last of the Mohicans yesterday which has A LOT of dark scenes in it and the picture was horrible. It looks like a PC when the color is set to 256 colors and whatever is on the screen requires true color. Bright screens look fine, just the dark ones where there is an array of dark shades on the screen have the issue.
Unfortunately, I have not confirmed to this point whether or not I have the same issue with the D12's...just haven't watched them as much.
Anyone?

You know, I was watching 24 tonight and could hardly see what was going on. I know they shoot a lot of the scenes in the dark but I couldn't hardly see anything, period. I don't know if this is just another grand problem with the R15 or DirecTV in general. Who knows...

What you are seeing is more of the results of the SD compression, then the unit itself.

Yeah, I was watching 24, too. That was what made me think about posting. I meant to do it the other day and forgot. I just happened to be working while 24 was on and was logged on. I'll have to check the D12's to see how they react the next time I see something doing it really bad. Unfortunately, the bigger and more crisp TVs we all watch these days bring out the flaws much more than TVs of 10 years ago did.

Yes the signal being sent out is compressed which has a habit of clipping colors. Sort of like when you use higher compressing on a jpg file you see blocks of color.
