With all the new HD channels that DirecTV is announcing for the future will it be necessary for me to install a new dish? I live in an area where locals (SD & HD) are not offered and I don't believe they will be in the near future either. So with 100 channels coming down this year and the recent announcement by Disney and their 4 near HD channels I want to make certain I have the right equipment.

Currently I have a HR10-250.

You will need the new 5-LNB dish to receive all of DirecTV's current and future HiDef broadcasts. You'll also have to upgrade to a newer H20 HD Receiver or HR20 HD DVR since the HR10-250 cannot receive the new HiDef channels from the Ka-band satellites. DirecTV will upgrade/install your new dish for free if you get an H20 or HR20.

So how many more channels should I receive before I'll be 'forced' to switch over to the newer receiver? I know a few were recently added like TNT, NG, etc. which I already receive.

TNT shows up on my HR10-250, so that's not one of the newer ones.

Don't expect to see many HD channels added to the current mpeg2 channels, if any. DirecTV is getting geared up to start broadcasting a bunch of new HD channels via the mpeg4 sats in the 99 and 103 slots. They simply don't have the bandwidth to support any new HD channels in mpeg2. They were shutting down certain HD channels like TNT HD so they could steal the bandwidth for broadcasting NFL games in HD for NFLST subscribers.

Thanks for the help.

So if I want to get the new channels when they go online I should start making arrangements now for the new HR20 or I might be waiting in line for an install?

What dish is required to get HD on an HR10-250 in Seattle, WA? I would like to get DiscoveryHD, and do not care about locals. I currently have the simple 1 LNB dish.

A 3 LNB dish will do the trick for you, except join the crowd and get the 5 LNB dish for when you want more HD channels and get one of the MPEG-4 receivers.
