I've had my first hr-20 for a couple of months now. I am thinking about replacing my hd tivo with a second hr-20. My first unit was basically free after credits from directv. I'm wondering if I can expect the same kind of deal on the second unit or if I would have to pay substantially more. Any info is appreciated.

Funny, I'm looking in the opposite direction.
I got very little in the way of freebies for my first HR20 (paid $199 and got 2 months of premium channels for free) and by my reasoning they should give me a break on the 2nd one since they wouldn't need to supply me with a 5LNB dish and install this time. It won't cost them as much to get me up and running on a second unit so why should it cost me as much?

I'm also wondering.... I have One HR20-250 (Leased) Was wondering would they give me a swap for a HR20 ??? It would be my third HR20
I got the First HR20 FREE and the second for $99, but since my HR10-250 is Leased I'm wondering would it be a free swap ??
Since the HR20 is very stable right now, I'd rather make it a Complete family of HR20's :D

Yeah, cant get YES-HD (Mpeg-4) on it :)
I wish I could sell it off on Flea-Bay, unfortunatly it is leased from D* :(
I'm going to give them a Call now and see what they offer their "Best Customer" as a swap

I had a 10-250 die on me, which they replaced with a HR-20. Then I called and asked to have my other 10-250 replaced and they gave me another HR-20 and a new 5 LNB dish. No charge.

I made the mistake of buying my first HR-20 from Best Buy for full price. After about a week, I called to see if I could get some deal on a second one. I pretty much said that I could not afford $600 for two boxes, but would like to add a second one before the new dish was installed and have it all taken care of in one installation. That didn't seem to mean anything to the CSRs.
The first CSR did not offer me any discounts.
The second CSR offered that $199 deal and I passed on that.
The third CSR offered $199 with various credits; costing me $40 for the 2nd box once all the credits are applied.

No problems, but I actually am starting to really like the HR20 and would like to have a second one for in the basement.

When I wanted to swap out an hr10-250 the D* csr told me I could keep my "leased" hr10 and sent me an hr20 for $99.00. I sold the hr10 on ebay for $350.00.

Same thing happened to me when I called before, I got the HR20 for $99 plus $14.95 and she told me to keep the HR10-250... She said they dont want HR10-250's back

Guilty --- I have been trying to get a 2nd HR20 for a while. I am always told $199.99.
Not worth it to me - to lease, you know.

Just don't give up and don't be afraid to ask for retention if it means that much to you. My feeling is if you pay on time and about $100/month than you have a better chance than most of getting it for <$99. I got my first one by mentioning that I once lived in St. Albans, Maine (middle of no-where...less than 1000 people). He asked a few specific questions and we finally got around to the local dam that his father built...Now if that isn't strange I don't know what is...got it free!
Point is you never know just keep being nice and keep talking...

The first one was retention just hooking me up. Long time customer, NFL, NHL, 10yrs.
The second one was because my HR10-250 developed a HDMI problem ;).
I then sold it.
One word of caution to those of you who try to swap out.
My HR10-250 was MINE, but when I went to deactivate it they told me it was a leased receiver.
I told them I had the receiver well before any lease program started and the card was a P3 card
so there was no way it was leased.
They agreed and had to transfer me to some other department to take the lease flag off of it.

I just got off the phone with directv and after about 40 minutes on the phone and talking to 3 different people, I ended up getting the second unit for just the cost of shipping and a two year contract extension. I am very happy with the deal they were able to give me, even though it took a while to get it. No once I can confirm the new hr20 is "bug free", the hd tivo will be going up on ebay.

When I first got the $99 upgrade deal, DirecTV accidentally filled out my work order wrong and gave me two HR20's for a total price of $99. I know that many others got the same deal. Hum, I wonder if mistakes like this might be part of the reason why they had so many shortages early on ...

If that hr10-250 was leased on your account then they will probably request you to send it back to them or they will put a unreturned equipment fee on the account. Did you deactivate it from your account? That offer is there for cust with existing hr10-250s you can keep using the hr10-250 and they will send you a leased hr20 for $99 + $ 19.95. You get to continue using the hr10-250 so that it is not a swap but if that hr10-250 was leased then it requires you to send it back upon disconnection of that receiver.
