View Full Version : D and The Tennis Channel?
O.K. I know that many of you think I'm :beatdeadhorse: about this topic. So I thought I might as well do my beating in a thread. That way those that aren't interested can just skip this thread. I saw a post in another Forum from a tennis fan that is currently at the tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California. The Tennis Channel has a booth at the tournament and this tennis fan has Directv. So the question came up when was TTC going to get picked up by D? The person at the booth said D was going to test TTC at the French Open in May and that TTC could be seen on D by this summer. Sounds great right :) However, TTC people have been saying for years that D is going to pick them up and so far no luck :( :raspberry I don't suppose anyone here would have any insider information on if this is actually going to happen or not? I keep reading things that get my hope up only to have it not be true :nono2:

No insider information, but I saw this rumour on two tennis forums. Apparently, the Tennis Channel execs were putting out the word at the Tennis Channel Open in Vegas. But this is just a rumour reporte by someone who was at the TC Open.

TTC people seem to like to put out the information at tennis tournaments that they are going to be picked up by D. But it never happens :( :nono2: :raspberry

Well I'm just hoping here. But it does seem unlikely that we would be forced to miss Roland Garros, one of the four majors. But ESPN doesn't care about tennis, so it's not impossible.
ESPN must care something about Tennis they have been showing it on ESPN2.;)

ESPN2 has been carrying some tennis and I have been watching  The Tennis Channel and ESPN are going to split coverage of The French Open so you won't have to miss a major :) But the problem is ESPN doesn't show near as much tennis as it used to :( So it would be nice if D would get TTC. And TTC seems to think they are going to be picked up by D  But that isn't the impression I'm getting from D at all  :(

I would love to see the Tennis Channel and Horseracing TV get added to the Sports Pack. At least I do get TVG. I would also like to see the Golf Channel added back to the sports pack. Makes no sense to me why it was deleted from there.

I think The Golf Channel was moved to the basic packages was because The Golf Channel is now showing all Thursday-Friday rounds of all PGA tournaments (except the majors) and even showed all 4 rounds of the first 2 or 3 events.
I'm not a tennis fan, but was surprised when I switched from cable to satellite that D* didn't carry TTC when lowly Mediacom did.

From everything I see in the forums, not many providers are carrying the tennis channel. And it's quite true that ESPN has been reducing their coverage of tennis, so I also hope they pick up TTC. Even if TTC shares broadcasting with ESPN for Roland Garros, you just know it's going to be tape delayed up the creek. That is NOT going to be a good experience. Lastly, you can't go by any impression that DirecTV is giving you, because they almost never leak or give any indication of channel acquisitions until the channel is being broadcasted.

I'll take it as a niche channel. If it were in a sports pack, I would pay for it (ok, I would pay $10, not much more). But DirecTV doesn't even give that option. And I have a 2-year DirecTV contract, so I can't switch to Dish.

I would pay extra for The Anime Network and The Funimation channel. At least you can watch tennis on ESPN or Network Channels when the major tourneys are going on. Im not saying I dont want D* to pick up the Tennis Channel, but there are niche channels other than sports and I would like D* to look into them before adding yet another sports channel.

I was going to switch to DISH even if it did mean I would owe D some money and then DISH didn't show up  :(
:raspberry I think that positioning of the channel may be at least part of what is holding any possible deal up. I would guess TTC wants to be on a regular package like The Golf Channel. But The Golf Channel started out as part of the Sports Pack so TTC needs to understand that they need to get on anywhere with D. I'm also wondering if price isn't a part of the problem also? Anyway there has to be a problem/problems somewhere because I have had many CSRs tell me that people have requested The Tennis Channel. In fact I have been told by some CSRs that they would like D to carry TTC, but all they can do is pass the request to the programming section :(

Well believe it or not D* is having a bandwith problem.Once they get all their HD satellites up and running it should allow for more channel additions SD&HD.;)

yeah, but I suspect TTC is nowhere near the top of their list:-) I'm a rabid tennis fan, but I don't know anyone else who is. So I suspect that the demand for tennis is low. Of course, this is a vicious circle, the less tennis there is on tv, the less the demand will be. I just don't understand why ESPN fills up the hours with paintball, or whatever else they fill it up with. I only ever watch any of the ESPNs when there's tennis on, but I've surfed through them and they always have crazy stuff like cheerleading, paintball, poker which is fine. I just don't understand how there's a market for that but not for tennis. Ok, end of crazy tennis fan rant!

Well you now know another rabid tennis fan--ME :) And you are dead on about the "vicious circle" when it comes to tennis :( But TTC keeps insisting that D is going to pick them up while D keeps saying, "We don't carry The Tennis Channel and have no plans to do so". So there has to be a problem here somewhere

This is no different then historical with DirecTV...
They rarely in it's history have pre-announced channels before they where soon to be launched.
ESPN2-HD was a near disaster, as it was nearly a year after it was "announced" before it was turned on.
Some of the most recent ones like Sleuth and Chiller... we found out just a few weeks before they where turned on line.
National Geographic HD and some of the other HD's are "bucking" the trend a bit with that rule...
But it is not uncommon for DirecTV to deny they are going to carry and are in negotiations up to it is a done deal and activation date is set.

Exactly! I'm from the West Indies, but I can't imagine there's a very large audience for cricket in America. Let me see, who plays cricket test ... West Indies, UK, Pakistan, India, Australia ... I don;t know who else. It's not that many countries. But I've seen the prices for Cricket Ticket; it's mad expensive. It must be profitable for them somehow.

Apparently Cricket is a very big deal to a lot of the world. I was surprised by that fact :eek2: But I don't see it being a big deal in the U.S. I didn't even know there was a Cricket Tournament until D got involved

 The only way I knew it was a sport is because I have watched a lot of English shows that have made their way to the U.S. And at times cricket would figure into those shows.
But then that gave me the idea it was an English sport when really it is played in a lot of countries :eek2:

Well I'm lucky to have a family of sports lovers :) And I have to say with the one except of tennis that D does do a great job with sports :goodjob:
OHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I have been reading on some tennis sites that D is going to test The Tennis Channel, but it is going to be at the French Open
:eek2: Neither the U.S. men nor women Tennis Players play well on Clay :( The FO is probably the Slam the fans in the U.S. are the least interested in due to the poor play of our players :( :( D is not going to get an accurate test, if that information is indeed true  :icon_lame I almost hope the information isn't true because the FO will be a terrible test for The Tennis Channel

Well, I think they are testing it at the French Open, because Tennis Channel owns the broadcast rights. They will be reselling to ESPN, but probably not the quarterfinals on up. We'll see how that goes.

It's true that RG is not the best test market for tennis in the US, but really I think there is no good test market. US Open has been losing viewers for years and with American players on the decline (sorry, it's just a fact), I don't expect any change. I'm certainly looking forward to RG; if they get to the final, it will be the most competitive match between Federer and Nadal. For the time being, I'm sorry to say that the broadcast market for tennis in the US is doomed.

Sorry your wrong about the U.S. Open. More people have been not only going to see it in person, but the TV ratings have been higher also. Aye, I would pay extra for TAN and Funimation. It's frustrating to see those channels not on Directv..but channels like Ion still are wasting bandwith. All Ion shows is infomercials. I'm hoping they ditch G4 and Ion and give us The Anime Network.

 Duh--sometimes I can't believe how stupid I am. Of course, they would be Danes like your Avatar. And yes since I have been trying to get D to get TTC for 3 years now I would have to say I'm the most enthusiastic about it :yesman: And I would have been trying longer than that, but I didn't find out about TTC until well after they started up. But being enthusiastic about it has not gotten me TTC :(
Of course in all fairness to D I have read where some people have said TTC isn't a good channel now. Apparently there is a lot of "fill" to the programming--you know things being repeated. I think they need the rights to more Tournaments, but they can't get that until they have more channel coverage  It's a no win situation right now for TTC :nono2: :(
TTC has to get on D! If they could tell the tennis tournaments that D carried them, I know they would get the rights to more tournaments. D is the "gold standard" when it comes to sports  So TTC needs D, but D can get along just fine without TTC :(

In other DirecTV new-media news, Shanks said the company will serve up multiple-court coverage of the French Open to support the Tennis Channel’s presentation of the Grand Slam tournament this spring. Similar to the coverage it provided for last summer’s U.S. Open, DirecTV will offer multiple live channels from the tournament, which begins in May, as well as a special “French Open Mix” channel that will feature all live feeds, according to Shanks.

:hurah: I think? I'm glad the postings on tennis sites were true about D, the FO, and TTC :) Of course leave it to D to provide the twist--I hadn't read anything about it being interactive until now ;) However, as I mentioned earlier in the thread it concerns me that it is the FO. The Slam the American tennis fan is least interested in because our tennis players don't play well on clay at all :( Plus the time difference between the U.S. and France which you might know now I can't even remember what the difference is  I'm crossing my fingers on this one and I hope it does better than I think it will--please  BTW thanks for the posting
I know the FO is sometime away yet, but D doesn't seem to be giving the FO any big play right now :( But what is really surprising is that TTC isn't making a big deal about working with D :( TTC really needs to do that because they really, really need D :yesman:

:hi: Just wanted everyone to know I haven't forgotten all of you. It's just with all the HD postings there is really very little I can say :( I think D is doing a very good job with the FO  The interactive has been over because there were too few Matches left to let that continue. However, The Tennis Channel will continue on D until the FO is completely over. Then it is a question of how long I will have to wait until D picks up The Tennis Channel for real--not just this sneak peak FO

I think they said August.
I still think that we should do a donation collection to buy Dolly an HD TV. That way we'd hear from her more often.

I wish that could be done believe me  But what is it with D and The Tennis Channel? It was my understanding that there was to be the sneak peak FO and then the channel would be picked up later. However, my D channel guide seems to show that The Tennis Channel is going on during this week? But the FO ended today  Does anyone know anything about this here?

Since they have the uplink from the Tennis Channel...
If there is nothing else demandin the space right now...
They may just leave it up...

The sneak peek ends this week as D* is using the same channel range for the US Open golf interactive channels.

Thanks :) I thought it was too good to be true that it would stay on :( However, on TTC site I put in my zip code and it said both D and E carried TTC in my area. It didn't say anything about it just being a sneak peak with D
It flatly said D carried TTC

In fact on the D* site it says the sneak peek ends today but the TTC starts full time in August on Ch 217.

Thanks  I wish I didn't have to wait until August :(
TTC has always given out wrong information about D
And I wish TTC would stop doing that :kickbutt:

Does anyone know if TTC will be included in the old Total Choice Package or will I have to upgrade?

I would imagine that it will not be since that package has expired. They would try to get you to go to the new packages.

I don't know, but I think I have read in other threads where people have said they did get the new channels with the old packages. But, of course, that was shortly after the new Packages came out so things might have changed since then.
