View Full Version : Leased Receiver Fee???
I recently upgraded my HD DirecTivo (owned) to the HR20-700. I just looked at my bill and noticed that they've billed me for the HR-20 (which I had negotiated for free) and there is a Leased Receiver fee of $4.99, which was not divulged to me. I figured when they said "leased" that they simply owned it. I also have an H10 (owned) and I pay a $4.99 mirror fee.
Is there any way to get out of the $4.99 Leased Receiver fee? I thought I read on here that if it was your primary unit you didn't have to pay the lease fee.
I feel like I'm starting to get nickel and dimed (rather 5-buck'd) to death with the $5,99 DVR fee, also.
Any thoughts???
Are those the only 2 receivers you have? If so, you're right. 2 receivers = one fee. The first receiver shouldn't have a lease/mirror fee.

First fee is assumed in the package fee (premier, ect.) All additional boxes regardless of type are $4.99. We all pay.

If the HR20 is your leased receiver, then you should also see a primary lease fee offset for the $4.99. I think D* does this because with the change to leasing, some states charge sales tax on lease fees and D* has to collect that sales tax. Thus the charge the fee then rebate the fee, minus the sales tax.

I only have two receivers, an H10 that I own and the new HR20 that is leased. My bill shows the following fees:
Additional Receiver--$4.99
Leased Receiver--$4.99
There are no credits to offset either fee.
Should it be one or the other or both?

I would double check on the web that they don't have 3 on there somehow.

I have 2 HR20's and this is what mine looks like.
02/28 03/27 PREMIER Monthly 99.99
02/28 03/27 HD Access Monthly 9.99
02/28 03/27 Network: CBS HD Monthly 0.00
02/28 03/27 DIRECTV DVR Service Fee Price included in base package 0.00
Fees
03/01 Leased Receiver 4.99

Sure enough! When they replaced the DirecTivo they did not remove it from my account, so the web does show three receivers. I'll call them later tonight.

When I removed my HDVR2 from my account, they switched my HR20 to be the main receiver and I no longer have to pay tax on the lease (I also have an owned R15 and pay the additional receiver fee on that one).
OK I'm confused now. I'm getting an HR20 installed next weekend which is going to replace my R15 (that I own). I also have a D10 (that I own) in the other room (so 2 receivers total). Are you saying that I should only have to pay $4.99 for the extra receiver, and no lease fee for the HR20? I was under the impression that I was going to have to pay $4.99 to lease the HR20, and an additional $4.99 for the D10 "additional receiver" fee.

You'll only be charged the $4.99 fee for one receiver. My HR20 is my primary receiver, and since it's leased it has a $4.99 charge (plus 30 cents tax) on the bill. But they deduct the $4.99 (not the tax) because it's the primary receiver. I only actually pay fees for my other two receivers.

I just found out about this nice little undisclosed fee with my last bill. I have to Tivo's and put an R15 in the den for the kids. I contacted direct and according to them it is supposed "to save me money" so I won't have to make expensive equipment purchases.
So the R15 goes back to direct as soon as I get another Tivo to replace it.

You're going to get charged the exact same fee with the Tivo, it will just be called an "Additional Receiver" fee instead of a "Leased Receiver" fee. It's $4.99 for every receiver after the first one, exactly the same as it's always been.

I'll make it simple for those that are confused:
Your first/primary receiver incurs no extra cost beyond your programming package, owned or leased.
*Every* receiver after that incurs a $4.99 monthly mirror fee no matter what kind of receiver it is.
1) If it's owned it's called "Additional Receiver"
2) If it's leased it's called "Leased Receiver" (and depending on your state you may get dinged for sales tax on it, a few cents)
It's the same dang fee for any receiver, just called different things if you own or lease. Been this way for over a decade now. ;)
That's the way it has been on my bill, but I never understood why. So now I know--thanks :)

I had similiar problem. When they replaced my 2 receivers with two new HR20s, I checked online and they had me down for 4 receivers. They corrected that but when I checked again yesterday, they have me listed as:
Direct DVR= $5.99
Addt receiver= $4.99
Addt. receiver= $4.99
Addt. receiver $4.99
I only have 2 HR 20s. It looks like I'm paying for 2 additional receivers.
You might want to call them and get it corrected. They should also credit you for any overpayment you have made.

I have a HR20 and a H20.
Aside from programing and the HD fee. I am charged a $5.99 DVR fee and a 4.99 lease fee.
Does that sound correct?

I don't see how since it replaced and old Hughes standard receiver for which I was already paying a mirroring fee. How can they charge for a receiver I am not leasing from them?

If it's just replacing a receiver, then your payment will not change. It's the same with a leased receiver. The bottom line is that there is absolutely no difference in the monthly fees between leased and owned receivers. It's $4.99/month per receiver after your first one, period.

Yep!
Didn't I already try to make it easy for everyone with a nice simple chart on page 1? I guess it wasn't that simple since the quetsion keeps getting asked. :(
How about I try this:
ANY receiver beyond your first is $4.99 a month.
Period.
Finito.
Leased or owned doesn't matter.
Still $4.99 a month.
Period.

Thats called a mirroring fee which I already pay. If direct is charging you for receivers you own then they are ripping you off. One DVR or twenty, the price for DVR service is $5.99.

I can't imagine how it could be any simpler. I think the fact that it's so simple confuses a lot of people, who just can't believe that it could be so easy, and that there must be a catch. There isn't though.

What does the DVR fee have to do with it? Owned receivers since the beginning of time have had a $4.99 mirror fee after your first receiver. Leased receivers are no different, it's just called a lease fee instead.
DVR fee is a different animal and is indeed one free for your entire account no matter how many DVRs you have.

That would be one fee (not free).
Yes, it is a very simple concept.
If you have any DVRs on your account (ignoring for now any "grandfathered" business), there is a $5.99 a month fee for having DVRs (one, three, ten, it doesn't matter - $5.99 a month).
One receiver/DVR, $0.00 "additional/leased receiver" fees. More than one receiver/DVR, take the total number, subtract one (your 'primary'), that's how many $4.99 a month "additional/leased receiver' fees you'll have. All that fee is is the "mirroring" fee to send programming to all your receivers.

Ahh, the thread that won't die.
It should be said that Premier package subscribers will not have this $5.99 fee.
