I just had my second HR20 installed. When the installer came out he says "which 5LNB do you have?" I didn't know there was a choice, so he looks and says that I have the old one and the new slimline is available. I figure that he's going to install the new dish along with the HR20, but he says that a new dish isn't on the workorder.

He says he'll do me a favor and sell it to me and install it for $75. He says that if I get it through DTV it will be a whole new work order for the HR20 and the dish (which could take weeks) and it will cost $150 for the new dish in addition to the cost of the HR20. He said that the old dish was heavy and unreliable and that it won't work with the new satellite, so I'd be paying $150 to DTV to get a new dish sooner or later. Sounded suspecious to me. I've never paid for a dish in my life.

I also heard him on his Nextel with another installer who said that he had just gotten $105 from a guy for a similiar install.

I called DTV and had my call "escalated" and the person told me not to get the new dish today and if it was needed in the future it would likely be a free upgrade, so I kept my old dish. Am I going to have to pay $150 for a new dish when the new satellite goes up, or was this a scam to get $75 from me??

No. I have the old 5 LNB dish and it will work with the new SATS. You will not have to change your dish.

TIke,

As Bmore said, the original AT9 or "old" dish will work fine w/ the new sats. Good catch in not allowing that to take place.
I don't want to say it was a flat out scam. Maybe something got lost in the translation, but it certainly doesn't sound "right".

That really burns me that they would try to scam you like that. Make sure you report that!

Thank you all for the input. I didn't think that it sounded "right", either. Luckily, since I'm an "electronic age" kinda guy, my wife had the checkbook and I only had about $5 in cash. It's hard to pay for a deal "on the side" with an Debit Card!!! Even if I wanted to get the dish, I couldn't pay the guy.

Who uses cash or checks these days!!!???

Charge everything imaginaibe...earn more interest and free points/miles in the meantime...no logical reason to use cash unless you absolutely need to.
