Welcome to the forums, mthompso105! :welcome_s

Man that has a low look angle! overall, reminds me of the BUD I had before D* picked up NFL ST.

Cheers,
Tom

Is there really any DirecTV signal in Chile? Amazing.

Wow :eek2: They must not have HOAs in Chile. If you tried to put one of those babies up here, someones head would explode. :hurah:

That's priceless.

By the way, look at the angle, the bird must be sitting on the ground in a field.

Only one LNB. Looks like the guy on the otherside of the fence may have a bigger dish.

And they'd better "have a clear view of the northern sky".

Your HOA can't say anything about the white one...it's about 1.0 m.
The grey one looks like, about, 1.6 meters. Of course, Chile probably doesn't allow HOAs :) .

I don't want to come across as skeptical, but that looks like its been through some type of photo shop editing.

1) The angle is too low (satellite must be underground)
2) Dish is way too big for the LMB
3) The D* inlay on the top of the dish doesn't match the angle of the dish in the picture.

I'm not sure but I would question this picture.

Question away, the photo is real, the only thing I have done to it was compress it a bit before uploading. I agree about the angle, never said it was in production. I did not ask the folks at the lodge if it was in use, my Spanish was not good enough. I also agree about point 2 but I saw lots of different/odd looking dishes in traveling around South America. That's why I took the photo.

While many times, size does matter, the LNB does not change as the size of the dish changes. The only reason the 5LNB central LNB is large is because it is 3LNBs in one oversized feedhorn.

The dish looks like a 2m dish that D* sold for alaska and hawaii and possibly for Latin America (don't know if D* sold them there or people just bought them for there...)

I wouldn't mind that size dish if I could get one for 5 LNB's - it would pretty much eliminate rain fade.

I'm not so sure the angle is too low. The LNB assembly is mounted very low, and with the reflection angle off the dish, you are still looking fairly high. In addition, I have no idea what the correct elevation is from Chile, it could be fairly low to start with.

I was also in Chile and Argentina in Feb. and can verify the dishes are real and lots of them. Lots of advertising on Billboards and newspapers. Caught the guide at the Buenos Aires airport and lots of USA shows with Spanish Subtitles on their version of D*

I don't have my ruler, but I looks bigger than the 1.8 meter dish.
Next question: how far south in Chile is it? IF it is far enough [south] "your clear view of the northern sky" better be all the way down to the ground.

Remember the dish is a reflector to the LNB. The SAT is determined by "looking " at the angle the LNB is to the plane of the dish and then the reflection off of the dish. Roughly "looks" like 20 degrees elevation.

For whose googled challenged: http://gorp.away.com/gorp/location/latamer/argentin/map_arch.htm

Point rested. :D

Gotta lock those down so the kids don't take them when the snows hit.

Back when having a multi LNB dish wasn't a requirement here (No locals yet, and didn't have HD), I had a 36" pointed at 101. NEVER lost signal. When locals finally showed up on 119, I pointed a 30" dish at it, never lost signal from that satellite either.
I keep hoping for a "GainMaster" 5 LNB dish!

they need to sell those dishes here in New England. That would come in handy in winter.

We could have 5 of them sent up here. 2 Ku band LNBs, 1 Sat-C Kit, and 2 Ka-band LNBs. HOA's and wives will LOVE'EM lol
Not sure how far South the signal travels, but they could right on the edge of it, so a larger dish would be required, and would probably be the equivalent of an 18" or 20" dish up here.

For what?
Collecting that much more snow?
Or for playing in the snow?

The good news is each new generation of satellite is also more powerful and better at spreading that signal more evenly across the whole US, not just a central point in CONUS. The only time i lose signal is when ice builds up on the dish.

Tom

And thank goodness for a super soaker filled with warm water. Got to remember to make sure I have a working one on hand by the end of this summer JUST IN CASE. We occaisionaly get really good snow storms in the Philly area. :(

hmm, I am having a low signal on my locals since I moved and didn't tell directv i moved so I could still watch my home town news, I wonder if one of these babies can help me pull in the local spotbeam.

Actually, looking at the photo I'd say the satellite is 20-25% above the ground plane. If you look at the LNB and how it is offset below center, the sats are located above center by a similar amount.

However i found on CL a free big dish system a 10 footer in mass not too far from me for FREE(Guy moved into house and doesn't want it) going with my brothers dump truck and some tools this afternoon, i claimed that within minutes of the posting on CL
Maybe this weekend i will attempt to set it up.
I like this sweet deal.
