View Full Version : Live buffer timeline

I was watching a 30 minute show today and then started watching the show after it on the same channel. My wife asked me to rewind because she missed the end of the first show. When I rewound, the timeline came up green but only showing about 2 or 3 minutes in the buffer. It did that really annoying thing where you rewind and it just pauses for a few moments. Then it started to show the snippets of video. It then paused again when it hit the beginning of the buffer (from what I could see in my on screen timeline). After a few annoyed moments, I pressed play. To my surprise I had gone back into the previous show and the live buffer timeline changed back to show the time recorded in buffer from the previous show, and now it did not show any of the buffer time of the current show.

Not to jump in the camp of things that the HR10 did better, but its on screen display of the live buffer timeline was much better. You could see exactly where you were and how much buffer you had left. The HR20 does have more buffer time to work with, which is nice. Maybe its just me but its more important to see the the contents of my entire live buffer on screen then the amount of buffer used during the current show.

This isn't a bug, just something that is different when coming from using the HR10. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

There is 90 min of buffer, which is then broken down into each show. If the previous show had be an hour say & you were 25 min into the next you would have: 5 min of one show, the next show 60 min, and them 25 min of the last show. As you watched the buffer, the "real live show" will be still filling the buffer.
So this way "buffer" is broken down into "shows" that can be "recorded" even after they've pasted airing.
Can Tivo do this? :D

If you are saying that you can hit record in the buffer after a show is over (out of the guide so to speak) and that show will be "preserved" to be watched later then that is incorrect. You can watch anything within the 90 minute buffer but only a show that is presently in the guide can be recorded.
Being able to start recording anywhere within the live buffer timeline is one of my wishes though.

Well thank you. I knew I could hit record for a show with only 10 min left & I knew I could go back to an earlier show. As you could see I "thought" you could "dump" the buffer into a recording.
OK D* why can't we?

I think this feature would be very nice. It definitely would put the HR20 above TIVO's. It could be called "Preserve/Preserving" or "Save". You would be able to rewind the buffer, start "Preserving" then fast forward to where the segment you want ends and then "Stop Preserving".
That and.....DLB:rolleyes:

You make it too complicated. You're watching it in the buffer, the HR-20 knows the start & stop times of the show, a simple "dump" of buffer to storage.

This is absolutely how it should work. I, like VOS, thought it already did this. Now I have to go check! I thought I had done this before.

I believe that once a show is out of the guide the HR20 has no idea that the show exists in it's buffer so it won't recognize the shows start and finish. I may be wrong.
If there is a news show on that is already 50 minutes into the buffer and I just want to record 5 minutes of it I really don't want to have to record the previous 45 minutes or anytime that precedes the point where I want to start the recording.

Well you aren't going to be a happy camper.
I just went back in the live buffer to a show that was no longer in the guide. Then I pressed record [remote] and it's recorded.
Live Buffer will "dump" into a recording.
You can do this with a full 90 min if you haven't changed channels or been watching a recording during that time.
I'm a happy camper. :D

Now why do you assume I would be an unhappy camper?:nono2: Do you know me?:nono:
This is good news, I'm glad to know it works. I tried it and it didn't work for me. Good job.

Now don't ever assume anything about me.

Cause you "only wanted the last five min" and not the whole thing. [read your post, was I wrong?]

I want to have control as to what and how much of the buffer to record. Just don't want to waste buffer space. That's all.
At least you figured out one of the things I didn't think it would do. I'm going to have to try it in the morning when the buff has been going for 90 minutes.

Well...I'll be.......!!!! VOS is correct...you can go back into the buffer and save a show that is already over. It seems that the show must be complete, not a partial.
I did try it again last night on a partial show that was over and it didn't work but it did work this morning on a show that had been over for about a half hour but was complete.. I guess when I did try it a few months ago it was on a partial show..or that it is a new feature that appeared in some previous CE/NR.
Be that as it may...I'll take it.......very cool!!!!:joy:

I guess you can teach an old dog some new tricks; It all depends on what old school does the teaching.

Perhaps this should be added to the tip/tricks, if it isn't already.
In fact a partial show can be recorded that remains in the buffer after the show ends.
VOS should get the credit for verifing that this can be done.
Stuborn ole cote......
