View Full Version : How do you prioritize your SLs?

I'm curious how y'all might prioritize your Series Links? I prioritize mine by day of the week (Sunday, Monday, etc) first then by what I want to record most. For example right after the last Saturday SL I might put Conviction, in HD, ahead of Star Trek: Voyager, in SD. What about y'all?

I am not sure of the question. I use the prioritizer to select which programs I am willing to sacrifice if the better comes up to record. And by putting the most desirable ones first, I assure that outcome.

OTA Broadcast Network shows always have priority over cable/HBO and Showtime programs. Those get replayed a zillion times a week, but the network shows are usually one and done....

I would not do it this way because if a show comes on a different night then it normally does and a show that you would have like to record does not now because you had this other show higher on the list change night for some reason. I put them in order of my favorite show to my least favorite show.

In hindsight I guess I should have phrased my question along the lines of "what methodology does one use" to sort the prioritizer. I realize there are only a limited number of ways to do that, but I was just curious.

My method is, I think, the same as yours. I just use the idea of day of the week and time of broadcast.

My priority on prioritization:

1. My favorite shows

2. Adjustments based upon frequency of showing (shows that only run once per week above ones that have alternatives)

3. Adjustments due to reality (hard to do with HR20 but look at conflicts on HR10 and adjust).

Because of (3), I am still using HR10 as primary workhorse.

How important that show is to me. Number one in my prioritizer is the show I most want to have recorded given any conflicts. And once set up, I never change my prioritizer unless I add or delete a series link.

I have the prioritizers set to focus on what is most commonly viewed in that location first, then backups for the other DVRs as needed/available. For instance we tend to watch "Daily Show" and "Colbert Report" in the kitchen, so its on top there, then the backups for the LR DVR.

The LR has the Prime-Time OTA first, then the backup SLs for the kitchen...

Cheers,
Tom

I have my SLs set up first by day (Sun, Mon, etc.) and then by hourly time slot. I also have the SPs on my HR20 set up the same way. The reason that I do it this way is that on days that I have 3- or 4-way conflicts, I specify a different order between my HR10 and my HR20 so that all 3 or 4 shows get recorded. I actually have a spread sheet set up that lists everything from Sunday at 6:00 PM (Sopranos HD, eastern timezone feed) to Saturday at 6:30 PM (local showing of Ebert & Roeper). Makes it a lot easier to keep track of conflicts, which I color code in the spreadsheet. Currently I have 3-way conflicts on Monday at 9:00 PM (24, Heroes, 2.5 Men) and Wednesday at 10:00 PM (Lost, Medium, CSI:NY), and a 4-way conflict on Thursday at 9:00 PM (Grey's Anatomy, Scrubs, Supernatural, CSI).

There are other factors that affect the order on each one as well. On the HR10, I can't get Fox HD OTA, but I get Fox HD on the HR20 via sat, so 24 has a higher priority in that time slot on the HR20 than on the HR10. For awhile, there were audio dropout problems with both the local CBS and Fox affiliates, so the order was set up so that they had higher priority on the HR10. Then the HR10 had audio dropout problems, so certain programs were given a higher priority on the HR20. As the networks drop programs or move programs to a different time slot, I delete/move them in my spreadsheet and adjust the SLs and SPs as necessary.

On top of all that, I have a DirecTiVo (which is by far my most reliable DVR) in the MB and it's set up so that no matter what happens on either the HR10 or HR20, it's always going to record my top two choices for any given time slot.

This may sound complicated, but it's completely logical to me.

Same way I've done season passes on Tivo for the past 7 years. :D

My most favorite shows don't always go first.
1) What goes first are shows that only have one showing a week, such as those on the "big 4" networks. I will order these of course by most favorite in case there is a triple conflict.
2) Next come shows with multiple airings a week. These are next because if the first showings conflict with group 1 above then a later airing will be picked up.
3) And lastly are "filler" shows that I could care less if they record or not. If they do great, if not no loss.

I have my season passes set up by network by DVR ...

My HR10-250 (HD TiVo #24 records CBS and NBC.
My HR10-250 (HD TiVo #57 records ABC and FOX.
My HR20 records MPEG4 HD channels (YES plus others as they come on-line) plus premiums.

On each box, I set up Season Passes/Series Links by day of the week, simply for organization purposes, and with three DVRs I am guaranteed no conflicts.

Hm... by network. That's something I would not have thought of. Interesting.
