View Full Version : Fox Regional HD baseball. How much and how often?

I'm curious to know how Directv will handle the Fox regional baseball games that are broadcast in HD. For example, how many games will they carry each night in HD? Will it will work like it has in hockey: if your regional carries a game and is broadcasting it in HD, it'll show up on or around channel 95.

Along those lines, does anyone know how many games per night Fox produces in HD?

Anyone? SURELY someone on here has some idea on Fox regional HD broadasts. ;-)

There aren't many answers out there right now but since I work closely with a Fox Sports Net affiliate in my job, I can tell you a few things. It all depends on the local affiliates, not national Fox. I know that FSN Northwest plans to do most, if not all, home Mariners games in HD. That means that I'll get them on all on channel 96 (MPEG4 channel). If you're local FSN affiliate is broadcasting them in HD and you have a 5-LNB dish and MPEG4-capable receiver, you'll get them.

As for how EI is going to work, I'd assume that they'll be adding some channels up by where the regular EI channels are, i.e. 700s. I'd hope for 3 games per night at best, though.

The Cincinnati Enquirer recently ran article about this. There will be at least 33 Reds games in HD from FSN Ohio this summer. See these links...

That article is what has provoked me to research how D* will handle all of these HD games that FSN will be producing. One of my regionals is FSN South and when a recent Predators NHL game was produced in HD, D* had it on channel 95. We all know that D* can't show all of these HD baseball games so I was wondering how they were going to handle them.

Well they are saying at least 10 games a week on HD Superfan. There will be no more freebies on channel 95 I would think as they are pushing the Superfan thing now so it will either be your local RSN on 96 or 97 and/or Superfan channels.

This is interesting. According to the SF Giants website, their home opener on Tuesday afternoon will be carried by FSN-HD. Since I am going to be out-of-town, I thought I would program the HR20 to grab it so I can watch it when I get home -- unfortunately, as of this writing, there is nothing showing up in the guide on Channel 96 except "To Be Announced." If the game is going to be on, you would think they would know about it by now!

I guess I can set a manual recording for that time and hope for the best. My receiver doesn't show Channel 97, so I assume that's not available in my area and the game would not be on there.

FSN Bay Area will broadcast about 50 Giants (http://fsnbayarea.com/HD_Giants.jsp) and 40 A's (http://fsnbayarea.com/HD_Athletics.jsp) games in HD. KTVU (http://www.ktvu.com/sports/11470105/detail.html) will have about 20 additional Giants games.

Thanks! I understand that part, but in this case, I'm leaving town today and need to set the DVR to record the game, but can't, since it isn't showing up in the program guide. I've set a manual recording for Channel 96, and will hope that it's there.

I agree it's very frustrating. With a DirecTiVo, I could simply set up an autorecord wishlist and forget about it. But, because Channels I Receive doesn't work with the HR20, having timely guide data is critical. I hope the manual record works for you. I'll be at the game.:)

Maybe someone can answer me this: Cleveland gets FSN Ohio and STO (Sports Time Ohio) in HD, Columbus doesn't. STO carries Indians games, I get that. But, FSN carries COLUMBUS Blue Jackets games, and we can't get that HD in COLUMBUS, but Cleveland does? I don't believe it's a badnwidth issue, since it's already being carried, and I don't think it's a spot beam issue, b/c when I tke my receiver to my family in Toledo, and hook it up, I still receive my CMH locals there, so the spot reaches.

Last nights Reds/Cubs game was broadcast in HD on Fox Sports Cinn. It was on the regular channels 638 if you had hi-def capability {Proper antenna/ hd receiver etc.} you got the HD feed on that channel. You did not have to tune to channel 95,98 and so forth. It was also shown on one of the EI channels, I think it was 741 and it was in HD as well.

How can that be, isn't 638 SD only? Isn't 741 SD, I thought 730 and 731 where HD.

terryfoster
04-05-07, 08:54 AM
It could be possible that D* is working 638 like it is for The 101. Providing the HD feed to those with the appropriate equipment and subscription package without adding an additional channel. I've heard this was a possible direction D* was going to take with some of the new MPEG4 channels.

Of course I plan on testing this out myself on Saturday to verify.

Well, at least the pregame show was good. The game showed up in the guide sometime between 10:30 Monday night and 6:30 Tuesday morning. Yesterday's game showed up in similar tardy fashion.

We live west of Toledo near the Mi and IN line. We are closer to Cleveland and Detroit and the distance from Chicago as from Cinci.

I suspect the spot beam will not "spot" here :)

Cinci is on HD at 12:30 today BUT since it is not on FSN I suspect it is blacked out

My error. No HD. I read the wrong date.

But you can watch a rerun of our loss last night on 638 12-2PM :)

I am guardedly optimistic about the Red's this year. IF everyone stays healthy and the stars line up and my prayers are answered we might have a chance. :) Oh yeah, and the Cards keeping playing like they are now.

I have the HR20 and the 5lnb dish and FSN Ohio/Cinci is my local FSN, channels 637 and 638, and there was NO HD broadcast where I live. So, I suspect the spot beam only covers certain areas? We live 3-4 hours from Cinci.

Your right Terry it is the MPEG 4 format that is now broadcast in the Cincy DMA.If you have one of the newer sats/antennas on your roof and H20-HR20 receiver your all set.Did you happen to see any of the game on Wed. ??? If so you may have seen the " FOX SPORTS HD" monogram that was shown several times. I was thinking the same thing when I turned the game on. I thought, damn this is a good looking pic for SD,until I saw the above mentioned HD-logo.

FSN Ohio/Cincy would be on Channel 96 IF/WHEN the Reds are on in HD not 638. Go to this URL, plug in your ZIP Code and it will tell you if you are eligible for Reds HD and if so on what channel.

Bruce do you have the Cincinnati DMA for your locals ???? If so you too would have received the HD feed. At least that is my understanding of how it works. One of the members on this forum explained it to me a while back when I was to wondering how the Reds HD games were going to be broadcast and on what channel. So unless Wed.s game was a fluke on D*`s behalf I guess that is how it will be. I have the sports package and I even saw the Reds game on the FOX South Net in HD, and saw in SD on FOX Indiana I think it was.

DC I was thinking the same thing. I checked channels 95,96,98 only thing on was a Hockey game that I can recall. Like I said unless it was some fluke with D*`s signal that is the broadcast that I saw on the local FOX -Net 638. FOX-HD embossed right on the screen.

Channel 96 isn't a possible channel in my list of channels. Also since this feed is so new it appears that they haven't updated that page since if I (45236) don't have access to Reds games in HD from D* then I can't imagine who would. Also, when I plug in my parent's zip it says Sports Time Ohio (Ch. 657), Cleveland Indians (HD Available) and doesn't say they should tune to any channel in the 90s.

Not that channel number is a big thing here, but I don't know if I'm following this paragraph from D*'s website regarding RSNs in HD:

Customers who live within the RSN team territory and the spot beam area will also be required to have the H20 (MPEG4 compatible) HD receiver along with a five LNB dish to receive the RSN's HD programming. The HD games will be available on viewer channel 96 or 97 in each market, and the 24/7 RSNs will be seen on a separate channel that will have the same viewer channel number as their standard definition feed. For customers outside the spot beam, select HD games may be available on channel 95." - http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=127160&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=880397&highlight=

The "same viewer channel number as their standard definition feed" sounds like HD will appear on the SD channel if you're in the market. I could be misunderstanding this, though. Clarification would be welcome.

JLucPicard
04-05-07, 04:14 PM
From reading that I take it to mean that for RSNs that also broadcast in HD 24/7, the HD version would be seen with the H20 or HR20 on the same channel number that the SD feed is on.

If the RSN is not a 24/7 HD RSN, I take it to mean that the HD games would be on 96 or 97.

This statement - "For customers outside the spot beam, select HD games may be available on channel 95." - I take to mean that 95 will carry some of the HD Sports Pack (EI-type) games, I think - out of the area tells me National rather than Local "beam".

DCSholtis
04-05-07, 04:21 PM
JLUucPicard is right what that statement from D* meant that IF FSN Ohio/Cincy was 24/7 then the HD would also be in 638 but since its part time it will be on Channel 96 in MPEG 4. I would also be willing to bet that once the Free Preview goes away after Sunday. Any game on Channel 95 would be blacked out since HD games are now part of Super Fan. (Channels 730 and 731 with Mirroring to 94 and 95).

NKy.Yall
04-05-07, 04:36 PM
Hey I think we have an answer ,thx durl for posting the link. Also to DC and jLUucPicard for deciphering it for us. So if I look at this correctly after this week the local non 24/7`s nets will broadcast HD games in the 90`s { 95,96,98} range not the local channel i.e. 638.

DCSholtis
04-05-07, 04:45 PM
Im NOT sure Channel 95 will come into play past next week. That channel appears to be a mirror of one of the SuperFan HD channels so once the free preview ends after Sunday I believe 95 will be blacked out leaving only 96-97. (The MPEG 4 RSN block)

and followed up by DCSholtis since week 1 on EI was a free preview to all that maybe the local HD broadcast was shown on the local Sports Net i.e. Fox Sports Cincy. channel 638 ,after that the local Reds HD telecasts will be seen on the 90`s channels,95,96,98 what ever the case may be.All of the other HD telecasts{ Non local teams} will be on EI in that selected channel range{730-740`s}. At least that is how I read into it. Could be just a 1st week glitch by D* as well until they get all new-ness of the EI/SF worked out.

Channel 95 MIGHT be the Pirates feed in which case you would be blacked out. IF the Reds are televising this weekend check your EPG for Channel 96.
