So I posted the other day about D* coming to do an install with the new 5lnb dish and HR20 with the movers connection (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=83303). I was at work and my wife called saying the D* guy would not do the install due to a "line of sight obstruction." I talked to the guy on the phone and he said, "You just have too many tall trees so there is nothing I can do." He said there was no way around it but to cut all of the trees down. I then called DTV to see about cancelling or what my options are and the DTV tech said, "There is always ways around the trees. Even if you have a really high poll with the dish on the top." He transfered me to another department who told me that the local DTV supervisor would be coming out to my house to explore options.
Any thoughts around trees? Much thanks!

To be blunt. Trees are an obstruction. I would go with what they give as a pinpoint goal and decide where on the house or in the yard it would do the least damage to cut a hole in the foliage. Thinking of course of winds moving whats left in front of the line of sight.

I was told by installers that trees would obstruct my line of sight, twice. I moved to my house, installed a Dish Network dish, worked just fine. When I moved to DirecTV, DirecTV came out for the install, he told me the trees were in they. All the while, my dish dish was up there working out just fine, pointed in a very similar direction. I told him to remove the Dish dish, and put on the DirecTV one. He just changed out the dish on the actual mast, aligned the dish, and voila, perfect signal (I had a single LNB DISH dish, needed the triple LNB DTV dish)
Then, when i upgraded to the slimline, DirecTV said they'd come install it for free, so I had them come out. The installer told me the same as the one did years ago.. the trees were in the way and it wouldn't work. Told him to do it anyway. He did, and peaked the dish for all the sats. Sure, others might have trees that *really* get in the way, but not always. It *looks* like the trees would be in the way, but the tech didn't properly estimate the elevation of the dish. It clearly points up and above the trees he was talking about, and will always point above the trees, at least for MANY MANY years, I'm sure they won't grow that high, or if they even can.

Search for my post, its a few weeks old, I had 3 installers come out and say the same thing. I found a spot on my own using the Sun as a guide and after I finally got a supervisor out to my house, I told him where to put the dish and he said it wouldn't work. But after doing a little research on the internet, I now know more than the installers and I have a perfect picture.

See the "Sun and Moon" link in my signature below for instructions on how you can use their position in the sky to help you optimally site a new satellite dish to "see" all of DirecTV's satellites.
I live just north of Charlotte, nc and used the sun link to see where the satellites were. The sun was pretty high in the sky and over the tree tops. Pardon my skepticism, but are the satellites really that high in sky?
Hope to order a HR20 soon.

During the first week of March the Sun did indeed sweep across the sky in the same locations as the geosynchronous satellites. Now, 3 weeks later, the Sun is a bit higher in the sky than the satellites by several degrees. My "Sun & Moon ..." link (in my signature) will provide the exact locations and times of day for your specific latitude/longitude. At least once each month you can use the Moon at night, too.
