View Full Version : Strange audio noise

I've only watched 2 recordings from my Hr20 since 13e but I have noticed frequent 1-2 second long audio noises during both of them. It kind of sounds like a mechanical noise but is not a popping noise. I have never heard this kind of noise on the Hr20 before 13e or for that matter on any dvr I have used before. I'm using the New York Mpeg4 locals and have heard it so far on WABC during Greys and WNYW (fox) during 24. It's probably happening more but I just haven't watched anything else. During 24 I would say the noise occured about 10 times and become very irritating but 24 was still watchable as the noise doesn't last so long. I was watching 24 recorded (not live) but I was only about 30 minutes behind so it was recording 24 for part of the time I was watching it. Has anyone else heard a noise like I am describing? Anyone else watch 24 on the New York Mpeg4 Fox channel? I've posted this in the issues thread but I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this noise.

Some have described it as "stuttering". That what you are describing?

I guess it could be described as stuttering. It's not what came to mind though. It seems a little mechanical sounding and not related to the audio that's on the screen. I guess I'll try and search under stuttering. My wife said that when she was watching Greys the noise usually came with some pixelation but on 24 it was noise only. The video was perfect at the time with no freezes or pixelation.

Well I searched on stuttering and I'm not sure that this is the problem I have. As I mentioned I only had audio issues with 24 (no video issues) and I didn't have any dropouts. I also don't really think of the noise as stuttering. It's just a mechanical noise that plays for about 1-2 seconds. Could it be a hard drive issue?

search for buzzsaw, you'll find an mp3 attachment that is probably identical to the sound you are hearing.

I have been having this problem too with the latest national release.

Do you use the NYC Mpeg4 locals?

yes that's the noise. I don't use OTA and have only noticed it so far on my Mpeg4 locals. I heavily doubt it's a channel issue as it has happened on 2 separate channels so far. Also I don't use an audio receiver. I have audio going straight to my TV via HDMI. I think I even have Dolby turned off. Also I have never heard the noise until I got 13e. Have you found any solutions to the problem?

No solutions as of yet.

I only have Mpeg4 locals, no OTA. It is a compression issue on DTV's end of things. It has nothing to do with an audio receiver, or connection type. It is how the audio signal is being transmitted.

Here in CT, FOX is the worst, some weeks it is unwatchable. On a good week I'll get this happening every 4 to 5 minutes. On a bad week, more often than not, I'll get it every 15 - 30 seconds.

It also happens on CBS and NBC HD channels, but to a much lesser degree, where it is basically unnoticeable.

There are several threads about this in this forum.

I think I heard that last night too. We had thick snow clouds blocking the sattelites so we had no feed for a couple hours. Once most of them came up, if I changed the channel to say HDN or something I got the 771 searching for signal and that weird stuttering noise. It sound like a loud digital CD skip would sound if you were playing it on a turntable.

Kind of like Max Headroom.

Wow that really stinks. I don't know if I can keep watching stuff like this. I might just switch my season passes to the Mpeg 2 locals, since I have that option in NY. If this keeps up and I didn't have the mepg2 HD locals I would probably rather watch stuff on my SD DTivo. I have a 42" Panny plasma and it does very well with SD. Plus I watch from about 15 feet away so that definitely helps the SD out.

I've had to stop watching 24 on my HR-20 a few times, and revert to using my SD-DVR40. Thankfully I keep all the same "season passes".

Do you hear these noises on the national HD feeds such as HBO or Discovery HD Theater? If so, you might have a faulty box. I had this issue on every HD channel and a new box fixed this problem.

Right now I think I just hear it on Mpeg4 locals but I'll have to wait and see. My mother had an Hr20 that had loud popping noises straight out of the box on all HD channels. She got it replaced and no more problems. This sounds different though.

No, as detailed in the other threads, it is only on the local HD channels, via Mpeg4.
