Hi. Is DirecTV still going to do VOD? If so, have they set a date yet? Thanks.

Yes, they are still going to do it.
No, they have not set a date.

Through the dish ....
Your HR20 has extra capacity on its hard drive reserved for Showcases and VOD.

Thought I read they were doing it through a broadband connection.

Any ideas on what they planning on showing On Demand? How about Howard Stern?

Thanks

There is VERY little detail about what will be included in the VOD content at this point.

To each their own. That's the beauty of America! There's plenty of stuff on TV that I don't like but I don't bash other people for liking it. But the truth is, if he came to DirecTV, it would bring over a lot of fans from Comcast since that is the only place they can get his TV show.

And D* would get trashy and C* would be much improved.

Cool. Will it be wireless or through the dish? This question is like deja vu all over again.

The preferred methods of VOD should be by satellite (preferred) or by wired connection to the Internet (second choice). Doing a wireless connection will likely add a substantial delay in delivery of content that must be downloaded via the Internet.

I have a theory that Internet downloading will not be allowed without a full-time high speed terrestrial connection; no dialup and no satellite Internet.

DBS is a wireless connection in and of itself. Wireless can be applied to radio (terrestrial and satellite), telephones (cellular and cordless), remote controls and computer networking.

Any ideas on what they planning on showing On Demand? How about Howard Stern?Your first responsibility is to search the DirecTV forums for "Howard Stern". You will find all sorts of discussions.

The bottom line is that HowardTV is purely an on demand product from a company that is a joint venture of the big three cable companies. I think it unlikely.

I never understood the point of vod if you have a dvr. What am I missing? A co-worker has hbo on demand and is always bragging about how she can watch hbo shows whenever she wants. Big deal. I timeshift all of my shows, not just hbo.

Same here. I'm not sure I understand the point of video on demand when I have a DVR which is, um, video on demand. But then I also said I didn't understand why anyone would ever want a TiVo in the first place... now I can't live without my DVR. heh.

I never understood the point of vod if you have a dvr. Here's an application that has many salivating:

You forget to set an event for Dancing With The Stars but you still want to watch it. VOD can be the solution. This is the big attraction to Apple's Video iPod.

It isn't so much for the content that will surely repeat ad nauseum on Skinamax or Encore, but rather the events that only get one play.

As was pointed out earlier, there is programming that is available exclusively on demand like HowardTV and other programming from iN DEMAND.

I would want it. I just missed 24 because the snow clouds wouldn't give me a feed. VOD would take care of that.

or..

If you caught an episode of some program mid-season and really liked it, but didn't want to start from the middle of the season...voila VOD. Go back and start from episode 1.

My girlfriend has Time Warner Cable with VOD. I don't like her service, PQ, etc, but the VOD is pretty cool. On a Friday night with nothing going on, it's nice to scroll through a bunch of movies and pick one out that fits our mood.

vod sucks with time warner, all you can do is ff, pause, rr, i had it and there wonderful hd motorola dvr, and it sucks too, when you watch vod on it, it doesnt even tell you how much time is left, or wont pull up any info on what you are watching, unless you stop it, they didnt even have a reg digital dvr for my area, you had to take there wonderful hd dvr or a digital cable box, wow such a big choice, and 70 channels of crappy analog, and if you wanted digital you had to get a box, or there wonderful hd motorola dvr, which is another 15 bucks a month.

I am a video producer in Philly who, regrettably, works on a great deal of the On Demand (or as I like to call it "On Damned") content for C*.

Their main focus is definitely on quanitity of content over quality. That "quantity", however, by and large, truly stinks. ("Dating on Demand" anyone?)

I should hope if and when D* decides to provide VOD content, their focus will be to provide television that's actually worth watching on demand.

So would I. I don't understand the whole "don't bring him here" mentality, as if they'd be forced to watch nothing but Howard TV all the time. Don't want to watch it, turn on something else. Just like with satellite radio. Nice concept, huh? :)

We'd sign up for Howard in a second. It was Howard vs. Baseball for us in choosing satellite vs cable and Sirius vs. XM. We went with Sirius for Howard and D for MLB.

We got lucky with the Sirius/XM merger as now we'll get both (hopefully).

It would be nice if D can figure out how to give us VoD...I'm sure they're working on it because if they don't their future would be pretty bleak.

They've already figured it out, and we'll be seeing it very soon.

If D* is monitoring this thread, count me in as also signing up for Howard. In order for me to get HowardTV now, I have to make a deal with the devil (Cablevision). I can't bring myself to do that.

It's already been mentioned that HowardTV is done directly with iN Demand, which is owned by a groupd of cable companies. They don't want to work with DirecTV.

When they do VOD are they going to also update the UI? I wonder if they will have DVD cover art to click on when you select a movie?

The UI will be updated before VOD is rolled out. I seem to remember some kind of art being associated with the movies from the mockups I've seen, but I'm not 100% sure.

I have sympathy if you want Howard Stern, I think those of us who are against, or don't care, just don't want to see limited availability of other things as a result.

That's the thing about VOD, the availablity of one thing doesn't mean another thing can't be available. It's not like a regular channel, where you are limited by bandwidth. With VOD, DirecTV is only limited by server space, which can be upgraded cheaply at any time. They can offer everything under the sun.
