I've been a lurker for a few weeks now and two weeks ago scheduled an install for this coming Friday 3/30..I'll be getting an HR20 for the main room and then 5 standards for the rest of the TV's that are not HD..the HD and 4 of the standards are in the house and the remaining standard is in "workshop doghouse" out back about 50 feet from the house. Having read other posts and with answers to a couple of mine, I'll be installing 2 dishes wiht the HD and 3 standards on one, and the other 2 standards on second dish with some room to spare. Installer is providing a third dish for RV use with a standard receiver. I live in the Atlanta area and was curious about OTA, but after a discussion with the installer, he indicated in the Atlanta market and my location (from antennaweb.org, I am not more than about 12 miles from over 90% of the OTA towers, with the buly within 10 miles radius) so OTA is not really necessary. I'll judge that after the install..Outside of this, I know just enough to be dangerous to myself (and probably annoy the installer) but hey, it's my money, and the installer doesn't have to listen to the other half of the household when the #$^% doesn't work, and if you want it done right, make sure it's done right the first time..
So I appreciate the words on the forum and the unusually concise and large amount of help these forums offer. It really is quite amazing to see someone going thru an install and e-mailing the forum and getting answers as the install goes on..sure helps smooth the rough bumps..
I'll post back against this thread once the install goes through..let's keep fingers crossed that I will be doing this :joy: my wife won't be doing this :flaiming and the installer will be doing this  on a good note..
Thanks

:D :D :D :D :D :joy: :joy: :joy: Wow! What a difference there is with D* vs. Comcast - it is like night and day..I bought my service through a local outfit that is in the D* business here in Georgia that has a store and also installs the sytems. I choose that route since I ran into the guy at a NASCAR race hawking D* and spent about an hour talking to him..He offered the standard D* but with guaranteed service for as long as I have D* if I buy thru him..not a problem..the installer that he sent installs home theatre systems on the side, was previously worked for D* and has 10 years of install experience. this guy was good!! not only did he get things done efficiently, he took the time to do it right..he got here about 4, walked thru what I wanted done, and figured about 3 hours to do the job..on a Friday afternoon too..needless to say he did things right, ran replacement cable where needed, checked the existing cables, did a walk thru on each TV with D* after activation to make sure all working properly, and on top of that, hooking the D* cables to the surround system I have had, he noticed some things were off with the digital audio so the guy spent another hour revamping my TV, DVR, etc. to use the digital sound, etc. the way it was meant to be..I had no problem tipping him a $50..but get this, he said that was not necessary, just part of the service!! All in all, one of the best service techs I hae met in any field with an excellent attitude to beat..
I know I initally said three dishes, but he hooked up one dish to the house and ran it through a Zinwell splitter so all 6 are on one dish..Said we could try it that way first and if any signal problems, then he would put up another dish and run 4 from one and two form the other..Said it would save me some bucks ( they still threw in my RV dish, tripod and pole for free though - a 1 LNB dish, but 1 is all I need for the RV)..he did indicate how many times he has had to go back to installs by other techs that did not put the Band converters on the boxes..
I did have to do an RBR after he left since not all the HD channels came in, but after 5 minutes on phone with D* (and they really were quite nice) the problem was fixed. I don't really want to turn off the tube now, the picture is so @#$% good!!
A pretty good result and I look forward to trying out all the various tips and tricks put forth here in the forums as needed..thanks again for the information on dbstalk..it really gave me a good bit of knowledge to ask the right questions and understand what he was doing..thanks
