View Full Version : HD audio sync a locals issue?

I've been watching (and listening) closely, and to me it seems the previously mentioned audio sync issue (ie, audio being delayed on HD channels) is predominantly worse on the HD locals than anywhere else. In fact, it seems to have improved somewhat, at least for me, on SAT networks such as HDNet and HBOHD. (ESPNHD still has a problem, but we all know that)
Now however, as NBC Nightly News has moved into the HD realm (thankfully), I find it nearly unwatchable due to this audio sync problem. It's quite disconcerting.
So I ask this...could it be an issue of my local NBC station, in this case WCAU-DT Philadelphia, causing the delay when relaying their signal to the satcaster? This issue is very pronounced throughout all of NBC Prime, (The Office, 30 Rock, SNL for instance), and makes watching these shows quite frustrating. Other local national's HD programs (ABC, CBS, FOX) are noticeably delayed as well, but by far, NBC is the worst offender.
Shows NOT broadcast in HD, such as the local news (they're a little slow in catching up), are fine, as are OTAs.
Any hardware remedies, pause/play, switch channel then back, or even restarts have no effect on this, and in fact seem even more pronounced when playing back from DVR. (though this could just be my imagination).
Anyone else seeing this on any of your locals?

A few have found significant relief in replacing their audio system with one that isn't so pokey.
Whether your channel comes from an OTA antenna or via a digital connection between DirecTV and the broadcaster, the sound and video are typically synced when they leave the station.
Make sure you keep DirecTV up-to-date on your experiences.

Probably not the answer you are looking for, but I have never had an (HR20 generated) audio sync issue that wasn't cured by pausing for a few seconds, then play. This goes for MPEG2/4, and OTA MPEG2.
Some details on the particular show/time may help as someone may be able to confirm what you saw, and nail it down to MPEG4/HR20/Local affiliate.

This is actually just audio coming through my TV speakers. I usually use HDMI, but have also tried the RCA audio jacks when using component...same deal.
BTW, Dolby Digital broadcast via other networks, like the SD iterations of HBO, Showtime or Starz, hasn't had the same delay problem...only the HD nets, and primarily my locals.

Thank you, thank you, thank you it worked for me.

Your TV wouldn't happen to be a Samsung, would it?

Why...yes. The LNS3252D. Is this symptomatic? I usually use no enhancements. Is it just native to the unit? And why would it be true in some instances but not in all?

I think I see what you're talking about, as many Samsung DLP screens have had issues with audio/video sync where video actually lagged behind the audio...my issue is the other way around.
There actually was a thread regarding this back a couple of software versions ago...now I guess my question is if people found it more prominent on local HD channels...it seems not to have been fixed, whatever it was.

I am having the same problem too. My local fox station will have a 3 to 4 sec delay

Are you certain all of the channels that you think are DD are sending full DD 5.1?
I'd try hooking up the RCA cables to a boom box and see if the problem remains.
