View Full Version : HR10-250 question

I am visiting a friend in Dallas. He has a HR10-250 and a AKAI HD TV connected via DMI. The menu seems to be forcing the output to 720p -- when I switched to 1080i the program material was visable but all green and distorted. I see no "native=on/off" like I do in my HR20 in L.A.

The picture quality I am seeing on HDnet (Rick Steves) is not as good as I see at home. There was a shot this moring of hay -- I paused it and could see digital artifacting (blockiness). Also, whenever there is a pan across a scene the picture (not audio) looks like it "pauses" about once a second. I would describe it as 30 frames forward -- pause 1 frame -- 30 frames forward -- pause, etc.

Not having had a HR10 myself, is this common? Would a component connection work better?

Thanks in advance for any input the forum may have...

It is has been a LONG time that I tinkered with those settings..

The HR10-250 does not have a "native" feature but a "manual" feature. You can change the resolution by pressing on the up arrow and cycling through the selected resolutions.

You can select the resolutions by menu-messages and settings-settings-video-output settings: up arrow

It's been a while since I had my unit connected using DVI but I remember I eventually switched to component but honestly I don't remember why.

The first generation HR10-250's had problems with the HDMI cards. It sounds like your friend has one of those cards in his HDTivo. You can use the component video outputs instead and probably won't see any difference in the picture quality (except that it will probably look better than what you're seeing now).

Update:

The component cable did not work -- I could not get a viewable picture. (I received a "no signal" message until I disconnected the HDMI cable -- rebooted the HR10 and the picture was even then "broken up").

I have suggested to my friends that they contact D* and ask for an upgrade to the HR20. What do you think?

The lack of picture with the HDMI cable still connected is normal. The HDMI output will override the component connection unless you disconnect the HDMI cable. It does sound like you have issues with the HR10 but whether the HR20 is an actual upgrade is purely subjective. Granted, it is highly unlikely that DTV will supply you with a replacement HR10 so an HR20 may be your only option other than ebay.
