When my 622 was installed, the Sat company didn't use the power inserter with the DPP44 switch. While all seemed to work, I have a few Q's:
1) If my 622 is unplugged, the switch no longer gets power, killing all my other recievers
2) I've heard it said that while the 622 CAN supply enough power, it's not really rated to do so
3) I wonder what degree if signal issues I have might be associated with the switch power
Any comments on the above? Specifically #2... if the documentation says that eh power inserter MUST be used, I'm considering calling the Sat company, and asking to supply it as they should have originally.

The manual says it needs a power inserter, but my experience has been that as long as there is a DP receiver powered up and connected to port 1, the power inserter isn't necessary. I see no difference in signal strength with our without the power inserter.

Absolutely want the power inserter. Especially if you may connect non dish pro receivers. I for example have 2 622's (dp) and one 6000 (non-dp) connected.

When my ViP622 was installed I did not need a DPP44... but later when I got the Dish1000+ upgrade, the installer hooked up the DPP44 and the power inserter as well.
He was surprised when my ViP622 started working on the new setup before he had hooked in the power inserter.
I think, as has been said above, in some configurations it can work... but is not necessarily reliable. The power inserter should, in my opinion, be part of the install even if it seems to work initially without it... so by all means call back and make them come out or send you one and tell you where to install it.
