Hi,
I heard there is a device that can utilize one RG 6 coax cable for a HD-DVR. What is this device called and would it cost anything? If so, how much?
Would the installer bring one, or would I have to buy one?
Thanks,
Simon

If you are talking about using 1 cable for both tuners that is called SWM. It is not out yet and looks like it won't be out until 3rd quarter of this year. Cost no one knows yet.

I'm talking about one cable from the wall into this device, then two cables from the device into the HD-DVR.
Thanks,
Simon
PS: I've heard a lot about people having them already, so I'm pretty puzzled...

Some people on DBSTalk are lucky enough to be beta testers, thus the chatter on the site. It hasn't been released to the general public yet.

Yes you would need a SWM and that is not out yet.

BUT it AINT HERE YET and don't hold your breath it may take as long as it will take for the additional HDTV channels to show up, Sept. OCT. NOV.??????

Thanks everyone! I have one more question though. Do I need two coax wires going to the HD-DVR, or do I only need one? Are the two wires for the ability to record two shows at once, because I have never done that, and I probably won't need to.
Thanks,
Simon

Only one to SAT1/FTM input with a SWM multi-switch.

Ummm... can you clarify? I'm not good at all with Directv "code language".

You can get a stacker that will do what you want, but they're somewhat expensive.

The reason I am asking about this item is because I got my basement finished with no intention of getting satellite television, so I didn't install phone cords, 2 coax cords, etc., behind my televisions.

When the SWM (Single wire multi-switch) comes out you will only need to run one cable to the SAT1 input on the back of the receiver. If you look at the back of the unit it will say SAT1/FTM. FTM is what Directv was going to call the SWM but they changed it.

OK, now I understand a bit better, thanks!
Would I need the two wires for the HD-DVR, or until the SWM comes out could I only have one?
Sorry, I'm still pretty confused...

You could just use one as of right now but you will only be able to record one show at a time or watch one show at a time.

Hold on, I see in BMoreRavens' signature it says "Need SWM/FTM". Does that mean I don't need the item yet?
Thanks,
Simon

The HDDVR will function with only 1 line connected. It will only allow you to watch/record 1 show at a time, but if thats all you want then yes, it will work without issue.

I need one because one of my HR20's is in a room that I can not get a second line to and I would like to be able to record two shows at a time or record one and watch one at the same time.

My situation exactly! LOL!

I don't understand "SWM". From what I have seen on this thread, one cable from the satellite would be "split" and feed both tuners? Eliimating the need for multi-switches, or do I have this whole thing screwed up? This is too much for me to comprehend, I must bid you good night.

You will run the 4 lines from the dish to a SWM multi-switch. Then you would run one line to the SAT1/FTM input on the back of the receiver. That will be able to run both tuners.

Its very simply complicated. Or complexly simple? :D
The SWM takes the 4 lines that the dish puts out and does magic so that the most recent D* models: Hr20, H20, and D12 need only 1 line into a room. Within a room/location, the cable is diplexed to "split" off the Over the Air (OTA), signal, but the HR20 does not need to split the other line into two lines for satellite. If the SWM cable is plugged into the Satellite #1/FTM connector, it "splits" that internally as needed. (But only HR20 has the current software level to support SWM today. The other will by the time SWM is generally available.)
I have a mother-in-law unit that I can't run any more cable into. With SWM, I can run the one line into the unit and use normal every day splitters to feed the rest of the rooms like cable does today.

I was probably misled by the installer today. I was told that I could buy a DSS stacker and I would be able to watch and record 2 stations as one time on my HDDVR. Sounds like I have to wait. Am I correct or am I not getting what I need to do.

"I think" this will work with the R15, but I know it won't with the HR-20.

A normal stacker/destacker would allow any receiver to receive the programming from the satellites at 101°, mostly SD cable networks and a few locals. You would effectively have a single LNB dish via this technique, but it would feed several tuners at one location with just one coax. And I think OTA could be fed down this same coax.
A more expensive stacker/destacker (somewhere between $275 and $500) would allow you to have the equivelent of a 3lnb dish and possibly OTA. down one coax. A spot check of a few of my normal sites shows these are likely a hard to find item now.
Or you can run a single tuner for now until the SWM is released.
Cheers,
Tom

Do you know when the SWM will be out and when it is out where can it be purchased?

"Earl says"...third quarter, but no price yet...
At this point, we don't know how it will be made available (only at DirecTV, via retailers, etc.). I suspect you will be able to order via on-line dealers such as Value Electronics and Solid Signal, but nobody knows for sure (or if they do, they aren't telling).
