If anybody could answer, how does the HD picture quality look on a DLP set? For more details, see my signature.

IMHO, DLP is the best. But a good calibration on any DLP, LCD, or plasma and you have one great picture either way.

Cheers,
Tom

You sure that opinion isn't biased? :)

Biased? Just by my humble eyes. :)

I also like that it can't burn-in.

But everyone's mileage can vary.

Well, I'll take my LCoS. Although DLP is a close second. My eyes aren't nearly as humble. :D

I am biased. I have a Toshiba 72HM196, and I absolutely love it! I did calibrate it with a colorimeter and calibration software, but it still looked great "out of the box".

However, if you want "the facts", the Toshiba DLP's are the overwhelming choice of Consumer Reports.

It depends.

The current 1080p generation is pretty good. They have done a lot of work on the issues from the previous generation.

The previous generation (2006 and earlier) have issues with poor black-levels in a dark room and most all sets were only 1366x768 instead of the higher resolution 1920x1080

Plus they have/had the issue with the rainbow artifacts. I never liked the idea of the color wheel.

I love mine - the Mitsu 57" 1080p. Great stuff, and untuned just yet with the aformentioned calibration software.

I'll stick with my 34" Sony XBR-960 CRT tube TV. Great picture, and none of the problems that some of the other technologies have experienced.

I have 2 dlp sets (one 720p and one 1080p) both samsungs.

I also have some plasmas and lcd tvs.

The dlp sets by far have the best picture quality to them. Simply superb colors, details, and levels.

I purposefully stayed away from projection lcd (garbage to my eyes) and lcos, not a technology i was willing to adopt.

Curious to know what about LCoS made you unwilling to adopt it? You're okay with a bunch of mirrors and a color wheel, but not an LCoS chip? Seems odd.

The beauty of LCoS is that is it offers all of the benefits of DLP (black level, color saturation, etc.) without the downside (wobulation, rainbow artifacts, etc) A good LCoS will give the best DLP a serious run for its money, and often come out on top. Really what it is is all the best from LCD, and all the best from DLP, without the side effects of either. Tough to go wrong.

I believe LCoS is the best projection technology right now.

Biased? Yeah - but I researched for a long time before making my decision. (Unless you have a 3 chip DLP without a coor wheel.)

It is hard to go wrong with ANY of the big 4 in HD.

DLP, LCD, LCoS, Plasma. Each has it's issues/advantages, not to mention cost issues.

I doubt anyone coming from SD, when exposed to any of the above would be disappointed. As far as the "elite" techies go, there are forums where they do nothing more than play "my religion is better than your religion", and if that's your cup of tea, you can get all your deca-litres there.:p

I like DLP for cost/benefit, but that is nothing more than the opinion of one person.

I'm very pleased with my 720p Sammy and would buy another when needed.

For me it came down to the Sony LCoS vs. the Sammy 1080p DLP. Both have absolutley KILLER PQ, no question about it. At more than $1000 less for the Sammy, the "more bang for your buck" factor led me toward the DLP. PQ is a very subjective thing. Buy what YOU like.

I absolutely love my Sammy 5687. I am sure I would have loved the Sony as well.

I can see the RBE if I look for it, but otherwise it doesn't bother me. Some people are more sensitive to it than others. Some calibration can reduce it as well.

Toshiba 1080p "Talon" DLP vs. Mitsubishi 1080p DLP vs. Samsung 1080p DLP...

Of those of you who have seen all, which would you recommend for the following:

1. HD Sports viewing
2. Movie viewing (DVD and HD)
3. Viewing in ambient light
4. Viewing at extreme angles

THANKS!

At extreme angles I think you should forget about projection altogether.

This is where CRT will always reign supreme. Flat panels are also better than projection in that area - especially Plasma.

On my DLP, the side to side viewing angle is pretty good, maybe 160 degrees or so, but the up and down angle is pretty bad.

For a bright room, however, I don't think you can beat a newer DLP.

"overwhelming"?....not really....the Panasonic plasmas were right up there for 55" and larger.........

How can you say such a thing...you don't know what you're talking about clearly... or you would KNOW that my Sony is the only one for this.

Now I hope everyone will understand this is a parody on how people feel about their big purchases and that what they bought is what they like "best" as why else would they have bought it? Does anybody buy something because they "don't" like it?:D

I would never questions one's loyalty to what they own, I just question when people disregard what they don't own. DLP is great, but so is LCoS, plasma, LCD, CRT, etc. Everyone's eyes (and viewing envirenments) are different.
