View Full Version : Picture Smearing

I have noticed the past few weeks that my TiVo's picture is 'smearing'. It can best be described as 2 layers of picture, one in the background that moves, and the one in the foreground (front) that's supposed to move with it, but it doesn't and has a delay.

So when you watch people's faces, and they move, even a little, it's like part of their facial features are staying behind as it tries to catch up. Even does it on fences, and solid walls. The picture overall looks very compressed, IE. soft to the point of almost being fuzzy.

I would think this would be a signal issue, but the signal's not to bad. It's a little lower than my HR20, but not by much, maybe 1-5% on 1 tuner over the other when compared to the HR20 on the same sat & Transponder. Also the signal jumps around a bit more on the TiVo than on the HR20, not sure if that's just normal cause the TiVo is updating the signal strength readout more often, or if it's cause for concern.

It is on new wiring, but I doubt I did that bad a job putting the ends on. :D

How is the HR10-250 connected to your TV? Does the problem persist if you use change video output resolution, or use a different video connection? Sure sounds like a cable problem, or perhaps an HDMI card going bad. Perhaps you can post a photo?

It's an DirectTiVo - SD40, std. Def. Using S-Video.
It only does it on the TiVo, HR20 is fine as far as smearing goes.

I have meant to test it on another TV, but don't have another, just my 65er.

Can't really post a photo, don't have a tripod and get bad closeups of stuff that detailed /w out one. I'd have to do an animated GIF for you to see the problem, it's hard to spot stationary.

BTW. What's the rule of thumb for signal levels? IE. stability, fluctuations, certain transponders to watch for levels, etc.. Min. good rate, yadda yadda!

Satellite reception signal levels would not cause this sort of problem. With digital satellite signals, you pretty much either get good video, or not. Perhaps you'll see momentary pixelation or video breakup with marginal signals, but not the sort of problem you're describing.

I really think it's a connection problem. Try using composite instead of SVideo to see if that makes a difference. And if you can post your video, or a link to it, that would be great.

Could be, definitely wouldn't rule anything out at this stage. :)
I have had bad S-Video cables before, so wouldn't be the 1st time. I just find it kinda suspicious that it started happening right around the time I got the v6.3 s/w upd. which was also right around the same time I moved it from the bedroom after I gave that TV to my brother, and into the FamilyRoom on my 65er.

Can't really say one way or the other when in there the problem cropped up.

I'll try a new cable and let you know.
