Now that DishNetwork has NHL Center Ice, could NBA League Pass and more importantly NFL Sunday Ticket be too far behind? I hope not! I'd gladly shell out $150 for Sunday ticket, i'd even be willing to pay $200 to get all the games every weekend. Maybe they can even have one game a week broadcast on their HDPPV channel.

I think I read on nfl.com that they were negociating with dish, dtv and digital cable about carrying the package next season. DTV's exclusive rights end after this season

I hope Dish adds more sports programming in the future. :)
It's a year away, but I could see myself going to DirecTV if Dish Network doesn't get or share the NFL ticket. My cable cpmpany pretty much STINKS, so thats not an option.
NBA League Pass would be nice. :)

Does anybody else find it a little fishy that chat after chat of Charlie bashing the sports contracts that all of the sudden they offer the NHL Center Ice package, and just 2 days later the merger is pretty much dead?? Is he doing this because he knows that he has to offer this ASAP if the merger is dead? NFL is another matter. However, I'm almost ok on the NFL. Everybody in Metro Detroit can get 1 extra distant Fox station for just $1.5/month. I was able to get 2. Unfortunately they couldn't budge on a CBS station which was what I really wanted. However, the Fox's along give me an extra 2 or so games a week. For $3/month, that's not bad.

If Charlie eventually offers NFL Ticket it will put one last argument to bed, especially when you had add EPG overload by adding International Channels, Sky Angle & ExpressVu. Tivo clinging to life. If the merger fails, I expect *D to buy them. -opinion- UTV deader than a door nail.
P.S. I got to play with a Tivo this last week. How do you stop it from filling up the HD with mindless recordings based on what you watch? I went to add a timer and it said I needed to delete stored programs or some timers, both it set for me. Wish Lists?I would never use it. I also noticed when you set Wish Lists, Tivo dials out regardless of opt out. That's scarry...:ewww:

I have heard from two seperate sources that Dish is REALLY close to signing the NBL Center Court package.
Good to see Dish planning for life after the merger is denied.

"NBL Center Court"
Is that like NBA League Pass?

yeah thats what I meant.
I personally find the game of Basketball Dull. The only thing I find interesting about Basketball is the 4th Quarter, its the only time the game is interesting.
Im so out of Basketball, I am not even sure if its called Quarters or Periods, etc. :D

Speaking of the NFL Sunday Ticket, there was an article about it in the Rocky Mountain News a few weeks ago. It basically said the contract with DircecTV is up this year and they are looking at options. But the one really good thing is Pat Bowlen said they are considering letting you buy individual games instead of having to but a whole week or the entire season.

That is just details that will be up to the broadcaster(Dish, Direc, or cable monopoly). The negotiating with the NFL is the amount the broadcast er will pay the NFL per year. Bowlen is just speculating.

I`ll bet Charlie E. could buy the rights to NFL Ticket for around $600 Million .... Opps ... He is already obligated to send that amount to DirecTV soon, Oh Well :D ;)
actually, barry would be better than out of work steve...lol
Unfortunately, I have read in several places that under the terms of the current NFL deal with the broadcast networks (FOX / CBS / ABC), the networks must approve any change in the NFL Sunday Ticket.
As the network are already complaining about losing revenue to ST, it would not surprise me if there are no changes to ST until the network contracts are renewed (2005?).

I'm still trying to figure out how the networks lose money on the Sunday ticket when it includes their commercials. What am I missing?
Mark Holtz

It's a issue that deals with the local stations. The stations get a certain number of commercial slots where they can sell local advertising. With the games on satellite TV, the local stations advertising does not get seen.

Ah, that makes sense. So just give them a cut of the money to make up for it.
I think they're missing out on a big market by not selling individual games. I live in Denver and I'm a Jets fan. There's no way I'll pay $150 for the whole package if I could get it, or even the $30 for one week. But I'd buy 8 games or so individually at $5 each, or I'd pay $50 for the season's worth of Jets games. The down side is they would lose some of the full package sales. It's hard to say how it would work out overall, but I know a lot of people who feel the same way I do.

I seriously doubt we'll ever see individual games or just team packages anytime soon. But look at it this way $180 for the package divided by 16 games is only $12 per week. Thats not too much money to watch your Jets a week.

Except I don't need it every week. This year they have 3 primetime games plus they play the Broncos, so we're down to 12 games. Usually they they make it on a couple of times through the normal distribution of games by CBS and FOX, and sometimes I wouldn't be able to watch anyway. So I figure there are about 8 games a year that I want to watch but can't. So that's about $22 a game. If I want to see a game that badly I can just go to a bar and watch it for the cost of a couple of drinks.
Dennis
$22 a game is not bad.
Here in California, I go to a bar to watch the Skins, usually during Sunday morning.
admission - $10
a couple drinks - $5-$10
a brunch - $10-$15
I can't get out without spending $25 - $35. Watching games in a bar is not cheap, unless you have the thick skin of NOT ordering anything to drink or eat in the bar.

Well lately the real cost involved in watching the Redskins is not monetary.

Considering that college football pay-per-view games run from $14.95 to $29.95 or so, and English soccer matches run about $20 each, I doubt you'll ever be able to buy an NFL game for $5.
I'd guess an a la carte NFL game would run at least $15 ... an entire season for one team might be $100 to $120. I doubt they'd price it much lower, so as not to cannibalize sales of the full NFL package.
(Note - NFL Sunday ticket is $179 this year, and people on DBSTalk say that even at this price it is a money-loser for DirecTV. Expect the price to go up substantially in the future.)

Just guessing, I think an NFL game if purchased individually will be $20.00.
Anybody care to guess what the NFL Sunday ticket will cost next year?

NFLST $199
Individual game at least $29.95 (Bengals Free).

If they charge $20 for an individual game then what's the point? You can get all the games for the day for $30. They're just going to price themselves out of it.
As for the cost of watching the game at a bar, I've never been to one that had a cover just to watch football, must be a California thing :). I buy 2 drinks for a total cost of about $5.

Where are you guys getting this per game cost??? It ain't ever going to happen. Stop being so cheap. Damn Dish subs...
If its too expensive go to a bar. NFLST is a bargain in my mind and much more valuable than any other sports subscription. Hey you get almost 100% of games depending on your market. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Look if DirecTV loses its exclusive rights, this package will go at least $250 a season IMO. DirecTV underwrites it so they can sign people up. If they have to share it with Dish or Cable, they ain't going to keep the price lower.

What's wrong with Bengal Football? I get the best sleep of the week during their games. And that's AT the stadium that cost this city ¨ö BILLLLLLion dollars to build! I would have spent that money BUYING the Bengals and letting them play in RIVERFRONT stadium for the rest of eternity! MIKE BROWN-FREE no less.
PBS is a nice stadium, but for a HALF BILLLLLLion dollars it damned well better be!
See ya

How do you figure that? Right now they have overpaid the NFL in order to be exclusive carriers. That allows them to overcharge. If they have to compete with all the cable companies and Dish, they won't be able to charge as much as the want, the flip sid is that their rights to carry it won't be as high.

Look DirecTV underwrites part of the cost of NFLST to make people sign up for the service. I've heard that NFLST non exclusive to DirecTV would run $199 to $249 for the season. DirecTV makes no bones about the fact it sells the package at a loss.
jeffwtux
10-26-02, 07:14 AM
Yeah, they sell it at aloss all right, but not in that way. I think they paid to much to carry the entire package. I doubt the contract between NFL and DirecTV is a per subscriber contract. The NFL is going to want a guaranteed amount. They probably pay $20 million or so too much in order for it to be exclusive. They won't pay as much for a non-exclusive contract, neither will cable or Dish, thus the price will come down.
James_F

I don't think that NFLST will appear on Cable or Dish this round. An independent DirecTV needs NFLST to distinguish it from other providers.
