Hello all. I'm a new user/reader here...Found the link on the AVS forums. I've just got some questions that I hope you all can help me with.

First some background...I had D back in 2002-2003 in Indiana. Then, with my job I got xfered to Alabama. No need to D there because cable was free in my apartment. I just got xfered again to Shreveport, LA. and bought a house.

In all these moves, I've kept my old equipment from Indy...A Phliips dsx-5353r receiver, dish, and a (I believe) single LNB. It's got 2 coax hookups, but I think it's only a single lnb...I could be wrong.

I have no use for HD for another (at least) year or so.

Now my questions:

1) Can I still use any of this older equipment? Receiver? Dish? LNB? I keep reading in other posts about a 3 or 5 lnb...Will the old receiver work with a newer LNB?

2) I'd like a newer DVR receiver in my home theatre...So can I have them "lease" me a DVR receiver for my main room and also activate this older receiver? How would I explain to the CSR what I need?

3) Is it better to call D directly or use a local retailer here in town?

4) How many coax lines will I need coming into the receivers? I figure I can fish cables in advance to help the installer out.

Thanks for all the greats posts!

Welcome! You can use your old equipment - But....

2) I'd like a newer DVR receiver in my home theatre...So can I have them "lease" me a DVR receiver for my main room and also activate this older receiver? How would I explain to the CSR what I need?

If you are going to call D* - Just have them give you the latest and greatest equipment. If you are going to HD DVR - you need the 5 LNB dish. If you are going to use your old receiver - no HD - the old single/dual lnb with do.

3) Is it better to call D directly or use a local retailer here in town?

4) How many coax lines will I need coming into the receivers? I figure I can fish cables in advance to help the installer out.

If you can wait - do a search on SWM. Soon - a single line will be all you need. If you can't wait - you will need 2 lines per DVR if you want 2 tuners.

I would call D* first and see what they offer you.

Thanks for all the greats posts!Contact a local dealer and forget you ever had Directv in the past. You have a new address and phone number get set up as a new customer you will lease all new equipment and qualify for current promotions. If you don't want HDTV you don't have to order it but as a NEW customer you will get it at it's cheapest price. The H20 will be free after rebate.

OK...Let me see if I've got this...I can use my old single lnb if I'm just getting standard definition, right?

Or, if I get a newer receiver for the main tv, will they install a 3 or 5 lnb free? And still activate the old reciver as owned?

Since HD is a future possability...Does the D HD receiver have composite or s-video out so I could use it until I get a HD tv?

It's been 4 years since I had D...Am I still in their system as a previous customer, or would I now be considered new for specials?

Thanks!

The HD receivers/DVRs do have S-video and composite. You could still activate the old receiver, but these days all receivers are generally being activated as leased - you then need to speak with the Access Card department to get the old receiver reclassified as "owned". That shouldn't be too much trouble.

A word of warning for your information (not necessarily to steer you one way or another), but in D*s current business model, if you have any HD equipment on your account (HD receiver or HD DVR) you WILL be charged the $9.99 a month HD Access fee (unless it is included in the package you subscribe to) - even though you don't currently have an HDTV.

I checked the D* web site and Lyngsat, your local SD (no local HD channels at this time) are on DirecTV 7S at 119, so your old single LNB dish won't get you your locals.

Yes, you can use the old equipment, but I believe they will install a free (brand new) dish for you.

2) I'd like a newer DVR receiver in my home theatre...So can I have them "lease" me a DVR receiver for my main room and also activate this older receiver? How would I explain to the CSR what I need?

I don't understand very well from this. From what it sounds like you need one regular receiver and one DVR receiver. Well, you will have to pay $99 for the DVR, but they will give you new regular receivers free. Just have them upgrade you to all the newest stuff.

3) Is it better to call D directly or use a local retailer here in town?

Call D*. They use local installers to install the items.

4) How many coax lines will I need coming into the receivers? I figure I can fish cables in advance to help the installer out.

2 coax lines should go to the DVR and one should go to the regular receiver.

all your old equipment has little value, and with most of the promotions and specials you'll wind up paying very little if anything for brand new receivers.

If you plan on being in the house for any amount of time might as well get a 5LNB dish now and save you the trouble of replacing it when you do upgrade to HD.

You should still be in their system as a previous customer, once a customer always a customer with D*. Although the morally challeneged always try to get around that, as you can see from some of the responses. The HD receivers do have composite and s-video outputs so they can be used with SD tvs.
